III. <strong>The</strong> Miracles at Uruvelā - 141<br />
yatra hi nāma tāva bahū mandāmukhiyo pi abhinimminissati,<br />
since he can create so many coal-pans for them,<br />
na tveva ca kho Arahā yathā ahan.”-ti<br />
but he is surely not a Worthy One like I am.”<br />

[35: <strong>The</strong> Island Miracle]<br />
Tena kho pana samayena mahā-akālamegho pāvassi,<br />
<strong>The</strong>n at that time a great cloud poured down out of season,<br />
mahā-udakavāhako sañjāyi,<br />
and a great flood-water arose,<br />
yasmiṁ padese Bhagavā viharati so padeso udakena otthaṭo hoti.<br />
and in that area where the Gracious One was living the (whole) place became<br />
submerged with water.<br />
Atha kho Bhagavato etad-ahosi:<br />
<strong>The</strong>n this occurred to the Gracious One:<br />
“Yan-nūnāhaṁ samantā udakaṁ ussādetvā,<br />
“Now what if I, having risen above the water on all sides,<br />
majjhe reṇuhatāya bhūmiyā caṅkameyyan?” ti<br />
were to walk (on an island) in the middle on dusty ground?”<br />
Atha kho Bhagavā samantā udakaṁ ussādetvā,<br />
<strong>The</strong>n the Gracious One, having risen above the water on all sides,<br />
majjhe reṇuhatāya bhūmiyā caṅkami.<br />
walked (on an island) in the middle of dusty ground.<br />
Atha kho Uruvelakassapo jaṭilo:<br />
<strong>The</strong>n the yogi Uruvelakassapa (thinking):<br />
‘Mā heva kho Mahāsamaṇo udakena vuḷho ahosī.’ ti<br />
‘May the <strong>Great</strong> Ascetic not be carried away by water.’<br />
nāvāya sambahulehi jaṭilehi saddhiṁ<br />
with a boat and a great many yogis<br />
yasmiṁ padese Bhagavā viharati taṁ padesaṁ agamāsi.<br />
went to that place in the area where the Gracious One was living.
