23: <strong>The</strong> Second Miracle<br />

Atha kho Bhagavā Uruvelakassapassa jaṭilassa assamassa avidūre,<br />

<strong>The</strong>n the Gracious One, not far from the yogi Uruvelakassapa’s ashram,<br />

aññatarasmiṁ vanasaṇḍe vihāsi.<br />

dwelt in a certain jungle thicket.<br />

Atha kho Cattāro Mahārājāno, abhikkantāya rattiyā,<br />

<strong>The</strong>n the Four <strong>Great</strong> Kings, 175 towards the end of the night,<br />

abhikkantavaṇṇā kevalakappaṁ vanasaṇḍaṁ obhāsetvā,<br />

having lit up the whole of that jungle thicket with their surpassing beauty,<br />

yena Bhagavā tenupasaṅkamiṁsu,<br />

approached the Gracious One,<br />

upasaṅkamitvā Bhagavantaṁ abhivādetvā,<br />

and after approaching and worshipping the Gracious One,<br />

catuddisā aṭṭhaṁsu seyyathā pi mahantā aggikkhandhā.<br />

they stood at the four directions like a great mass of fire.<br />

Atha kho Uruvelakassapo jaṭilo, tassā rattiyā accayena,<br />

<strong>The</strong>n the yogi Uruvelakassapa, with the passing of that night,<br />

yena Bhagavā tenupasaṅkami,<br />

approached the Gracious One,<br />

upasaṅkamitvā Bhagavantaṁ etad-avoca:<br />

and after approaching he said this to the Gracious One:<br />

“Kālo Mahāsamaṇa niṭṭhitaṁ bhattaṁ.<br />

“It is time, <strong>Great</strong> Ascetic, the meal is ready.<br />

Ke nu kho te Mahāsamaṇa abhikkantāya rattiyā,<br />

Who were those, <strong>Great</strong> Ascetic, towards the end of the night, who,<br />

abhikkantavaṇṇā kevalakappaṁ vanasaṇḍaṁ obhāsetvā,<br />

having lit up the whole of that jungle thicket with their surpassing beauty,<br />

yena tvaṁ tenupasaṅkamiṁsu, upasaṅkamitvā taṁ abhivādetvā,<br />

approached you, and after approaching and worshipping you,<br />

175 <strong>The</strong>y live in the lowest of the deva realms directly above the human world, and have<br />

control over the yakkhas, nāgas, kumbhaṇḍas and gandhabbas.
