śarīrapīḍā tu yadīha dharmaḥ sukha śarīrasya bhavatyadharmaḥ |<br />

dharmeṇa cāpnoti sukha paratra tasmādadharma phalatīha dharmaḥ || 7.26<br />

26. ‘If the m<strong>or</strong>tification <strong>of</strong> the body here is religion, then the body’s happiness is only<br />

irreligion; but <strong>by</strong> religion a man obtains happiness in the next w<strong>or</strong>ld, theref<strong>or</strong>e<br />

religion here bears irreligion as its fruit.<br />

yataḥ śarīra manaso vaśena pravartate vāpi nivartate vā |<br />

yukto damaścetasa eva tasmāccittādte kāṣṭhasama śarīram || 7.27<br />

27. ‘Since it is only <strong>by</strong> the mind’s auth<strong>or</strong>ity that the body either acts <strong>or</strong> ceases to act,<br />

theref<strong>or</strong>e to control the thought is alone befitting, — without the thought the body is<br />

like a log.<br />

āhāraśuddhyā yadi puṇyamiṣṭa tasmānmgāṇāmapi puṇyamasti |<br />

ye cāpi bāhyāḥ puruṣāḥ phalebhyo bhāgyāparādhena parāmukhatvāt || 7.28<br />

28. ‘If merit is gained <strong>by</strong> purity <strong>of</strong> food, then there is merit also in the deer; and in<br />

those men also who live as outcasts from all enjoyments, through being estranged<br />

from them <strong>by</strong> the fault <strong>of</strong> their destiny.<br />

duḥkhe ’bhisadhistvatha puṇyahetuḥ sukhe ’pi kāryo nanu so ’bhisadhiḥ |<br />

atha pramāṇa na sukhe ’bhisadhirduḥkhe pramāṇa nanu nābhisadhiḥ ||<br />

7.29<br />

29. ‘If the deliberate choice <strong>of</strong> pain is a cause <strong>of</strong> merit, why should not that same<br />

choice be directed to pleasure? If you say that the choice <strong>of</strong> pleasure carries no<br />

auth<strong>or</strong>ity, is not the choice <strong>of</strong> pain equally without auth<strong>or</strong>ity?<br />

tathaiva ye karmaviśuddhihetoḥ spśatyapastīrthamiti pravttāḥ |<br />

tatrāpi toṣo hdi kevalo ’ya na pāvayiṣyati hi pāpamāpaḥ || 7.30<br />

30. ‘So too those who f<strong>or</strong> the sake <strong>of</strong> purifying their actions, earnestly sprinkle water<br />

on themselves, saying, "this is a sacred spot," — even there this satisfaction resides<br />

only in the heart, — f<strong>or</strong> waters will not cleanse away sin.<br />

spṣṭa hi yadyadguṇavadbhirabhastattatpthivyā yadi tīrthamiṣṭam |<br />

tasmādguṇāneva paraimi tīrthamāpastu niḥsaśayamāpa eva || 7.31<br />

31. ‘<strong>The</strong> water which has been touched <strong>by</strong> the virtuous, — that is the spot, if you wish<br />

f<strong>or</strong> a sacred spot on the earth; theref<strong>or</strong>e I count as a place <strong>of</strong> pilgrimage only the<br />

virtues <strong>of</strong> a virtuous man’, 1 — water without doubt is only water.’<br />
