iti suhdamivānuśiṣya ktye turagavara nvaro vana yiyāsuḥ |<br />

sitamasitagatidyutirvapuṣmān raviriva śāradamabhramāruroha || 5.79<br />

79. Thus having exh<strong>or</strong>ted the best <strong>of</strong> steeds like a friend to his duty, he, the best <strong>of</strong><br />

men, longing to go to the f<strong>or</strong>est, wearing a noble f<strong>or</strong>m, in brightness like fire, 1<br />

mounted the white h<strong>or</strong>se as the sun an autumnal cloud.<br />

atha sa pariharanniśīthacaḍa parijanabodhakara dhvani sadaśvaḥ |<br />

vigatahanuravaḥ praśātaheṣaścakitavimuktapadakramā jagāma || 5.80<br />

80. <strong>The</strong>n that good steed, avoiding all noises which would sound startling in the dead<br />

<strong>of</strong> night and awaken the household, — all sound <strong>of</strong> his jaws hushed and his neighing<br />

silenced, — went f<strong>or</strong>th, planting his hurrying steps at full speed.<br />

kanakavalayabhūṣitaprakoṣṭhaiḥ kamalanibhaiḥ kamalāni ca pravidhya |<br />

avanatatanavastato ’sya yakṣāścakitagaterdadhire khurān karāgraiḥ || 5.81<br />

81. With their lotus-like hands, whose f<strong>or</strong>e-arms were ad<strong>or</strong>ned with golden bracelets,<br />

the Yakṣas, with their bodies bent down, threw lotuses and b<strong>or</strong>e up his ho<strong>of</strong>s as he<br />

rushed in startled haste.<br />

guruparighakapāṭasavtā yā na sukhamapi dviradairapāvriyate |<br />

vrajati npasute gatasvanāstāḥ svayamabhavan vivtāḥ puraḥ pratolyaḥ || 5.82<br />

82. <strong>The</strong> city-roads which were closed with heavy gates and bars, and which could be<br />

with difficulty opened 2 even <strong>by</strong> elephants, flew open <strong>of</strong> their own acc<strong>or</strong>d without<br />

noise, as the prince went through.<br />

pitaramabhimukha suta ca bāla janamanuraktamanuttamā ca lakṣmīm |<br />

ktamatirapahāya nirvyapekṣaḥ pitnagarāt sa tato vinirjagāma || 5.83<br />

83. Firm in his resolve and leaving behind without hesitation his father who turned<br />

ever towards him, 3 and his young son, his affectionate people and his unparalleled<br />

magnificence, he then went f<strong>or</strong>th out <strong>of</strong> his father’s city.<br />

atha sa vikacapakajāyatākṣaḥ puramavalokya nanāda sihanādam |<br />

jananamaraṇay<strong>or</strong>adṣṭapāro na punaraha kapilāhvaya praviṣṭā || 5.84<br />

84. <strong>The</strong>n he with his eyes long and like a full-blown lotus, looking back on the city,<br />

uttered a sound like a lion, ‘Till I have seen the further sh<strong>or</strong>e <strong>of</strong> birth and death I will<br />

never again enter the city called after Kapila.’<br />
