mattasya parapuṣṭasya ruvataḥ śrūyatā dhvaniḥ |<br />

aparaḥ kokilo ’nutkaḥ pratiśrutyeva kūjati || 4.51<br />

51. ‘Come and listen to the notes <strong>of</strong> this intoxicated cuckoo as he sings, while another<br />

cuckoo sings as if consenting, wholly without care.<br />

api nāma vihagānā vasatenāhito madaḥ |<br />

na tu citayataścitta janasya prājñamāninaḥ || 4.52<br />

52. ‘Would that thine was the intoxication <strong>of</strong> the birds which the spring produces, —<br />

and not the thought <strong>of</strong> a thinking man, ever pondering how wise he is!’<br />

ityeva tā yuvatayo manmathoddāmacetasaḥ |<br />

kumāra vividhaistaistairupacakramire nayaiḥ || 4.53<br />

53. Thus these young women, their souls carried away <strong>by</strong> love, assailed the prince with<br />

all kinds <strong>of</strong> stratagems.<br />

evamākṣipyamāṇo ’pi sa tu dhairyāvtedriyaḥ |<br />

martavyamiti sodvego na jaharṣa na sismiye || 4.54<br />

54. But although thus attacked, he, having his senses guarded <strong>by</strong> self-control, neither<br />

rejoiced n<strong>or</strong> smiled, thinking anxiously, ‘One must die.’<br />

tāsā tattvena vasthāna dṣṭvā sa puruṣottamaḥ |<br />

sasavignena dhīreṇa citayāmāsa cetasā || 4.55<br />

55. Having seen them in their real condition, 1 that best <strong>of</strong> men pondered with an<br />

undisturbed, 2 and stedfast mind.<br />

ki vinā nāvagacchati capala yauvana striyaḥ |<br />

yato rūpeṇa sapanna jareya nāśayiṣyati || 4.56<br />

56. ‘What is it that these women lack 3 that they perceive not that youth is fickle? f<strong>or</strong><br />

this old age will destroy whatever has beauty.<br />

nūnametā na paśyati kasyacid rogasaplavam |<br />

tathā hṣṭā bhaya tyaktvā jagati vyādhidharmiṇi || 4.57<br />

57. ‘Verily they do not see any one’s plunge into disease, and so dismissing fear, they<br />

are joyous in a w<strong>or</strong>ld which is all pain.<br />
