109. By partaking that food having made her obtain the full reward <strong>of</strong> her birth, he<br />

himself became capable <strong>of</strong> gaining the highest knowledge, all his six senses being now<br />

satisfied,<br />

paryāptāpyānamūrtaśca sārdha suyaśasā muniḥ |<br />

kātidhairyaikabhāraikaḥ śaśākārṇavavalbabhau || 12.110 (12.113)<br />

110. <strong>The</strong> seer, having his body now fully robust, together with his gl<strong>or</strong>ious fame, one<br />

beauty and one majesty being equally spread in both, shone like the ocean and the<br />

moon. 1<br />

āvtta iti vijñāya ta jahuḥ pacabhikṣavaḥ |<br />

manīṣiṇamivātmāna nirmukta pacadhātavaḥ || 12.111 (12.114)<br />

111. Thinking that he had returned to the w<strong>or</strong>ld the five mendicants left him, as the<br />

five elements leave the wise soul when it is liberated.<br />

vyavasāyadvitīyo ’tha śādvalāstīrṇabhūtalam |<br />

so ’śvatthamūla prayayau bodhāya ktaniścayaḥ || 12.112 (12.115)<br />

112. Accompanied only <strong>by</strong> his own resolve, having fixed his mind on the attainment<br />

<strong>of</strong> perfect knowledge, he went to the root <strong>of</strong> an Aśvattha tree, 2 where the surface <strong>of</strong><br />

the ground was covered with young grass.<br />

tatastadānī gajarājavikramaḥ padasvanenānupamena bodhitaḥ |<br />

mahāmunerāgatabodhiniścayo jagāda kālo bhujagottamaḥ stutim || 12.113<br />

113. <strong>The</strong>n Kāla, 3 the best <strong>of</strong> serpents, whose majesty was like the l<strong>or</strong>d <strong>of</strong> elephants,<br />

having been awakened <strong>by</strong> the unparalleled sound <strong>of</strong> his feet, uttered this praise <strong>of</strong> the<br />

great sage, being sure that he was on the point <strong>of</strong> attaining perfect knowledge:<br />

yathā mune tvaccaraṇāvapīḍitā muhurmuhurniṣṭanatīva medinī |<br />

yathā ca te rājati sūryavatprabhā dhruva tvamiṣṭa phalamadya bhokṣyase ||<br />

12.114 (12.117)<br />

114. ‘Inasmuch as the earth, pressed down <strong>by</strong> thy feet, O sage, resounds repeatedly,<br />

and inasmuch as thy splendour shines f<strong>or</strong>th like the sun, thou shalt assuredly to-day<br />

enjoy the desired fruit.<br />

yathā bhramatyo divi vāyapaktayaḥ pradakṣiṇa tvā kamalākṣa kurvate |<br />

yathā ca saumyā divi vāti vāyavastvamadya buddho niyata bhaviṣyasi || 12.115<br />
