ityarāḍaḥ kumārasya māhātmyādeva coditaḥ |<br />

sakṣipta kathayā cakre svasya śāstrasya niścayam || 12.15<br />

15. Arāḍa, thus impelled <strong>by</strong> the noble nature <strong>of</strong> the prince, declared in a concise f<strong>or</strong>m<br />

the tenets <strong>of</strong> his doctrine:<br />

śrūyatāmayamasmāka siddhātaḥ śṇvatā vara |<br />

yathā bhavati sasāro yathā vai parivartate || 12.16<br />

16. ‘O best <strong>of</strong> hearers, hear this our firmly-settled the<strong>or</strong>y, how our m<strong>or</strong>tal existence<br />

arises and how it revolves.<br />

praktiśca vikāraśca janma mtyurjaraiva ca |<br />

tattāvatsattvamityukta sthirasattva parehi naḥ || 12.17<br />

17. “<strong>The</strong> evolvent" and "the evolute," birth, old age, and death, — know that this has<br />

been called the reality <strong>by</strong> us; do thou receive our w<strong>or</strong>ds, O thou who art stedfast in thy<br />

nature.<br />

tatra tu praktirnāma viddhi praktikovida |<br />

paca bhūtānyahakāra buddhimavyaktameva ca || 12.18<br />

18. ‘But know, O thou who art deep in the search into the nature <strong>of</strong> things, that the<br />

five elements, 1 egoism, intellect, and "the unmanifested" are the "evolvents;"<br />

vikāra iti buddhi tu viṣayānidriyāṇi ca |<br />

pāṇipāda ca vāda ca pāyūpastha tathā manaḥ || 12.19<br />

19. ‘But know that the "evolutes" consist <strong>of</strong> intellect, external objects, 2 the senses, and<br />

the hands, feet, voice, anus, and generative <strong>or</strong>gan, and also the mind.<br />

asya kṣetrasya vijñānāt kṣetrajña iti sajñi ca |<br />

kṣetrajña iti cātmāna kathayatyātmacitakāḥ || 12.20<br />

20. ‘<strong>The</strong>re is also a something which bears the name kṣetrajña, from its knowledge <strong>of</strong><br />

this "field" (kṣetra <strong>or</strong> the body); and those who investigate the soul call the soul<br />

kṣetrajña.<br />

saśiṣyaḥ kapilaśceha pratibuddha iti smtiḥ |<br />

saputraḥ pratibuddhaśca prajāpatirihocyate || 12.21<br />

21. ‘Kapila with his disciple became the illuminated, — such is the tradition; and he, as<br />

the illuminated, with his son is now called here Prajāpati.<br />

1 <strong>The</strong>se are the tanmātrāṇi <strong>or</strong> subtile elements.<br />

2 Viṣayān, c<strong>or</strong>responding to the gross elelments. <strong>The</strong> intellect buddhi is both an evolver and an<br />

evolute.
