tatsnehādatha npateśca bhaktitastau sāpekṣa pratiyayatuśca tasthatuśca |<br />

durdharṣa ravimiva dīptamātmabhāsā ta draṣṭu na hi pathi śekaturna<br />

71. Through their love f<strong>or</strong> the prince and their devotion to the king, they returned,<br />

and <strong>of</strong>ten stopped looking back; 1 they could neither behold him on the road n<strong>or</strong> yet<br />

lose the sight <strong>of</strong> him, — shining in his own splendour and beyond the reach <strong>of</strong> all<br />

others, like the sun.<br />

tau jñātu paramagatergati tu tasya pracchannāścarapuruṣāñchucīn<br />

vidhāya |<br />

rājāna priyasutalālasa nu gatvā drakṣyāvaḥ kathamiti jagmatuḥ kathacit ||<br />

72. Having placed faithful emissaries in disguise to find out the actions <strong>of</strong> him who<br />

was the supreme refuge <strong>of</strong> all, they went on with faltering steps, saying to each other,<br />

‘How shall we approach the king and see him, who is longing f<strong>or</strong> his dear son?’<br />

iti śrībuddhacarite mahākāvye kumārānveṣaṇo nāma navamaḥ sargaḥ || 9 ||<br />
