kāma sadā strīcarita tamisra tathāpi tā prapya bhśa vireje |<br />

na hīdulekhāmupagamya śubhā nakta tathā satamasatvameti || 1.17*<br />

17. Verily the life <strong>of</strong> women is always darkness, yet when it encountered her, it shone<br />

brilliantly; thus the night does not retain its gloom, when it meets with the radiant<br />

crescent <strong>of</strong> the moon.<br />

atīdriyenātmani duṣkuho ’ya mayā jano yojayitu na śakyaḥ |<br />

itīva sūkṣmā prakti vihāya dharmeṇa sākṣādvihitā svamūrtiḥ || 1.18*<br />

18. ‘This people, being hard to be roused to wonder in their souls, cannot be influenced<br />

<strong>by</strong> me if I come to them as beyond their senses,’ - so saying, Duty abandoned her own<br />

subtile nature and made her f<strong>or</strong>m visible.<br />

cyuto ’tha kāyāttuṣitāt trilokīmudyotayannuttamabodhisattvaḥ |<br />

viveśa tasyāḥ smta eva kukṣau nadāguhāyāmiva nāgarājaḥ || 1.19*<br />

19. <strong>The</strong>n falling from the host <strong>of</strong> beings in the Tuṣita heaven, 1 and illumining the<br />

three w<strong>or</strong>lds, the most excellent <strong>of</strong> Bodhisattvas suddenly entered at a thought into her<br />

womb, like the Nāga-king entering the cave <strong>of</strong> Nandā.<br />

dhtvā himādridhavala guru ṣaḍviṣāṇā<br />

dānādhivāsitamukha dviradasya rūpam |<br />

śuddhodanasya vasudhādhipatermahiṣyāḥ<br />

kukṣi viveśa sa jagadvyasanakṣayāya || 1.20*<br />

20. Assuming the f<strong>or</strong>m <strong>of</strong> a huge elephant white like Himālaya, armed with six tusks,<br />

with his face perfumed with flowing ich<strong>or</strong>, he entered the womb <strong>of</strong> the queen <strong>of</strong> king<br />

Śuddhodana, to destroy the evils <strong>of</strong> the w<strong>or</strong>ld.<br />

rakṣāvidhāna prati lokapālā lokaikanāthasya divo ’bhijagmuḥ |<br />

sarvatra bhāto ’pi hi cadrapādā bhajati kailāsagirau viśeṣam || 1.21*<br />

21. <strong>The</strong> guardians <strong>of</strong> the w<strong>or</strong>ld hastened from heaven to mount watch over the w<strong>or</strong>ld’s<br />

one true ruler; thus the moonbeams, though they shine everywhere, are especially<br />

bright on Mount Kailāsa.<br />

mayāpi ta kukṣigata dadhānā vidyudvilāsa jaladāvalīva |<br />

dānābhivarṣaiḥ parito janānā dāridryatāpa śamayācakāra || 1.22*<br />

22. Māyā also, holding him in her womb, like a line <strong>of</strong> clouds holding a lightningflash,<br />

relieved the people around her from the sufferings <strong>of</strong> poverty <strong>by</strong> raining<br />

showers <strong>of</strong> gifts.<br />
