official said to me, “We can make anyth<strong>in</strong>g you Americans <strong>in</strong>vent faster, cheaper,<br />

<strong>and</strong> <strong>in</strong> many cases better, but we want more <strong>in</strong>ventors <strong>and</strong> <strong>in</strong>novators <strong>and</strong> Nobel<br />

Prize w<strong>in</strong>ners.” I wondered if those fancy UCONN pens I brought as gifts for my<br />

hosts were made <strong>in</strong> Ch<strong>in</strong>a! The persons who <strong>in</strong>vited me said <strong>the</strong>y wanted to “pick<br />

my bra<strong>in</strong>” on better ways of promot<strong>in</strong>g <strong>and</strong> <strong>in</strong>fus<strong>in</strong>g more teach<strong>in</strong>g for creativity<br />

<strong>and</strong> <strong>in</strong>novation <strong>in</strong>to <strong>the</strong> Ch<strong>in</strong>ese education system. I sometimes wonder if <strong>the</strong> more I<br />

learn about topics like creativity, globalization, <strong>and</strong> technology <strong>the</strong> less certa<strong>in</strong> I am<br />

about what can be done to <strong>in</strong>fuse good practices <strong>in</strong>to what happens on a day-to-day<br />

basis <strong>in</strong> classrooms around <strong>the</strong> world. Glad I’m review<strong>in</strong>g chapters that take on <strong>the</strong><br />

<strong>in</strong>terrelationships between <strong>and</strong> among <strong>the</strong>se multifarious concepts – some ideas are<br />

start<strong>in</strong>g to come toge<strong>the</strong>r.<br />

These r<strong>and</strong>om thoughts plowed through my bra<strong>in</strong> as I turned off my <strong>in</strong>-flight TV<br />

<strong>and</strong> started to read ano<strong>the</strong>r chapter from <strong>the</strong> books that Don <strong>and</strong> Bob asked me to<br />

review. This pioneer<strong>in</strong>g two-book series wraps its arms around all of <strong>the</strong> big ideas<br />

<strong>and</strong> issues that def<strong>in</strong>e <strong>the</strong> study of creativity, globalization, <strong>and</strong> a modern world that<br />

is chang<strong>in</strong>g at warp speed. As most of <strong>the</strong> chapter authors <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> book po<strong>in</strong>t out,<br />

creativity, globalization, <strong>and</strong> technology have brought <strong>in</strong>to perspective <strong>the</strong> numerous<br />

political, social, economic, <strong>and</strong> human relations issues that def<strong>in</strong>e <strong>the</strong> 21 st <strong>Century</strong>.<br />

And undoubtedly, what was most important to me is that educators at all levels, from<br />

policy makers, researchers, <strong>and</strong> school adm<strong>in</strong>istrators to curriculum developers,<br />

counselors, psychologists, <strong>and</strong> classroom teachers, will f<strong>in</strong>d ideas <strong>and</strong> issues <strong>in</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong>se books that perta<strong>in</strong> to <strong>the</strong> research, <strong>the</strong>ory, <strong>and</strong> practice that guide educators <strong>in</strong><br />

mak<strong>in</strong>g schools more effective places for young people.<br />

The editors of this series have brought toge<strong>the</strong>r a diverse group of <strong>the</strong> most<br />

prom<strong>in</strong>ent contributors to <strong>the</strong> literature <strong>in</strong> creativity, giftedness, curriculum<br />

development, <strong>the</strong> arts, talent development, <strong>and</strong> literacy. The books <strong>in</strong>tegrate <strong>the</strong><br />

complex <strong>and</strong> diverse elements of <strong>the</strong>se topics with <strong>the</strong> overrid<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong>mes of creativity<br />

<strong>and</strong> globalization. The sheer scope <strong>and</strong> detail of <strong>in</strong>formation about issues <strong>in</strong> each<br />

author’s respective area of specialization is almost overwhelm<strong>in</strong>g <strong>and</strong> it made me<br />

both th<strong>in</strong>k about my own work <strong>and</strong> th<strong>in</strong>gs that need to be reexam<strong>in</strong>ed <strong>in</strong> view of<br />

<strong>the</strong> “macroproblems” that we face <strong>in</strong> a rapidly chang<strong>in</strong>g world <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> need for<br />

<strong>in</strong>terdiscipl<strong>in</strong>ary work <strong>in</strong> fields that have for too long have been studied <strong>in</strong> isolation.<br />

It certa<strong>in</strong>ly made <strong>the</strong> many disparate ideas <strong>in</strong> my bra<strong>in</strong>, ideas that have appeared,<br />

disappeared, <strong>and</strong> reappeared <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> literature over <strong>the</strong> decades, crash through my<br />

m<strong>in</strong>d <strong>and</strong> I wondered what would be <strong>the</strong> best th<strong>in</strong>gs to say <strong>in</strong> this preface.<br />

No one sits down <strong>and</strong> reads books like this from cover to cover, but <strong>the</strong>re is<br />

someth<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong>se two volumes for everyone. I suggest that readers beg<strong>in</strong> with<br />

<strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>troductory chapters of both books. These “big picture” focus chapters<br />

syn<strong>the</strong>size <strong>in</strong>sights from over thirty academic discipl<strong>in</strong>es. The overviews will help<br />

you underst<strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> impact of globalization on <strong>the</strong> life prospects of today’s young<br />

people <strong>and</strong> will also help you make decisions about which chapters are most relevant<br />

to your own work. The <strong>in</strong>terdiscipl<strong>in</strong>ary nature of macroproblems such as climate<br />

change, economic <strong>in</strong>equality, <strong>and</strong> political turmoil set <strong>the</strong> stage for address<strong>in</strong>g<br />
