<strong>the</strong>se nations, which represent very different sett<strong>in</strong>gs for <strong>the</strong> nurturance of gifts <strong>and</strong><br />

talents. While <strong>the</strong> economies of both nations have grown considerably, young people<br />

still face some unusual constra<strong>in</strong>ts when it comes to <strong>the</strong> discovery of aspirations <strong>and</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> development of <strong>the</strong>ir talents. The authors <strong>in</strong>voke constructs such as ideological<br />

frameworks <strong>and</strong> social Darw<strong>in</strong>ian processes to clarify <strong>the</strong> nature of <strong>the</strong>se contextual<br />

<strong>in</strong>fluences. They conclude with some comments about what each nation must do to<br />

streng<strong>the</strong>n <strong>the</strong> chances for <strong>the</strong> success of <strong>the</strong>ir next generations as <strong>the</strong>y confront <strong>the</strong><br />

turbulence of <strong>21st</strong>-century globalization.<br />

Sheyla Blumen takes us <strong>in</strong>to Lat<strong>in</strong> American contexts <strong>in</strong> her chapter titled, High<br />

Achiev<strong>in</strong>g Deprived Young People Fac<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> Challenges of <strong>the</strong> <strong>21st</strong> <strong>Century</strong>. She<br />

describes some daunt<strong>in</strong>g challenges faced by gifted education <strong>in</strong> Lat<strong>in</strong> America<br />

<strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> Caribbean region while emphasiz<strong>in</strong>g some advocacy efforts on behalf of<br />

<strong>in</strong>digenous populations suffer<strong>in</strong>g from socioeconomic deprivation. She zeroes<br />

<strong>in</strong> on Peru, which provides examples of some promis<strong>in</strong>g attempts at provid<strong>in</strong>g<br />

impoverished, culturally diverse young people with opportunities to discover <strong>and</strong><br />

develop <strong>the</strong>ir potential <strong>in</strong> spite of <strong>the</strong> odds aga<strong>in</strong>st <strong>the</strong>m. Her analysis <strong>in</strong>cludes<br />

<strong>in</strong>terpretations of ways <strong>in</strong> which <strong>21st</strong>-century conditions are <strong>in</strong>fluenc<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> life<br />

chances of bright young people <strong>in</strong> this part of <strong>the</strong> world.<br />

Mary Jacobsen gives us a look at organizational development, leadership, <strong>and</strong><br />

<strong>in</strong>novative processes <strong>in</strong> her chapter titled, Clear<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> Way for Pivotal <strong>21st</strong>-<strong>Century</strong><br />

Innovation: More <strong>Talent</strong> Literacy, Less <strong>Talent</strong> Management. She turns our attention<br />

toward <strong>the</strong> need for <strong>in</strong>novation <strong>in</strong> our organizations <strong>in</strong> view of <strong>the</strong> complex, new<br />

dem<strong>and</strong>s on organizational systems posed by developments <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>21st</strong> century.<br />

Mary argues that those who work <strong>in</strong> organizations, especially those who take on<br />

leadership roles, must break <strong>the</strong>mselves free from counterproductive stereotypes that<br />

suppress <strong>the</strong> work of talented <strong>in</strong>novators. These stereotypes often <strong>in</strong>volve colleagues’<br />

negative perceptions of talented employees. She uses <strong>the</strong> term “talent literacy” to<br />

help us underst<strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> need for clarify<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> nature of our misconceptions <strong>and</strong><br />

dogmatism when it comes to appreciat<strong>in</strong>g <strong>and</strong> facilitat<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> work of those most<br />

capable of lift<strong>in</strong>g organizations out of various forms of entrenchment <strong>and</strong> mov<strong>in</strong>g<br />

those organizations toward <strong>the</strong> acquisition of <strong>in</strong>novative new capacities that will<br />

enable <strong>the</strong>m to succeed <strong>in</strong> complex, <strong>21st</strong>-century conditions. While emphasiz<strong>in</strong>g<br />

<strong>the</strong> importance of <strong>in</strong>novators, she frequently returns to discussions of chang<strong>in</strong>g<br />

societal conditions <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> ways <strong>in</strong> which <strong>the</strong>se conditions are mak<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> work of<br />

talented <strong>in</strong>novators more important than ever before. Particularly useful is an ICD<br />

(<strong>in</strong>tensity, complexity, drive) model she develops to enable better underst<strong>and</strong><strong>in</strong>g of<br />

<strong>the</strong> productive attributes <strong>and</strong> contributions highly talented <strong>in</strong>dividuals can br<strong>in</strong>g to<br />

organizations, <strong>and</strong> to <strong>the</strong> world.<br />

Dorothy Sisk closes this section by <strong>in</strong>vestigat<strong>in</strong>g some problems faced by many<br />

<strong>in</strong> today’s globalized world. In her chapter, Fill<strong>in</strong>g that Empty Space <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> Lives of<br />

People <strong>in</strong> a Globalized World Beset with Turbulence <strong>and</strong> Crises, she discusses <strong>the</strong><br />

sense of angst that can arise when our values are driven by excessive <strong>in</strong>dividualism<br />

<strong>and</strong> materialism, as <strong>the</strong>y are <strong>in</strong> much of <strong>the</strong> world today. Argu<strong>in</strong>g that <strong>the</strong> gifted<br />
