<strong>and</strong> a focus chapter titled, Twenty-First <strong>Century</strong> Contextual Influences on <strong>the</strong><br />

Life Trajectories of <strong>the</strong> Gifted <strong>and</strong> <strong>Talent</strong>ed. In <strong>the</strong> focus chapter, Don Ambrose<br />

provides a conceptual model based on <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>tegration of perspectives from<br />

multiple discipl<strong>in</strong>es. The model illustrates <strong>the</strong> threat of enormous macroproblems<br />

<strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> potential benefits of unprecedented macro-opportunities that arise from<br />

socioeconomic, technological, cultural, <strong>and</strong> political-ideological conditions <strong>in</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> <strong>21st</strong> century. The macroproblems threaten to crush <strong>in</strong>dividuals <strong>and</strong> societies<br />

that f<strong>in</strong>d <strong>the</strong>mselves mired <strong>in</strong> a miserable trap underneath an enormous wave of<br />

globalization. Fortunately, <strong>the</strong> macro-opportunities promise to lift <strong>in</strong>dividuals <strong>and</strong><br />

societies toward unprecedented success, if <strong>the</strong> education system can enable today’s<br />

young people to leap to <strong>the</strong> crest of <strong>the</strong> globalization wave. After <strong>the</strong> analysis of<br />

<strong>21st</strong>-century dem<strong>and</strong>s, suggestions are made about <strong>the</strong> blend of knowledge, skills,<br />

<strong>and</strong> dispositions required for deal<strong>in</strong>g with <strong>the</strong> macroproblems <strong>and</strong> capitaliz<strong>in</strong>g on<br />

<strong>the</strong> macro-opportunities. This focus chapter serves as a launch<strong>in</strong>g pad for <strong>the</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r<br />

contribut<strong>in</strong>g authors’ analyses. They use it to exam<strong>in</strong>e ways <strong>in</strong> which <strong>the</strong>ir expertise<br />

fits toge<strong>the</strong>r with trends <strong>and</strong> issues <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>21st</strong> century.<br />

David Yun Dai <strong>in</strong>itiates section two with his chapter titled, Envision<strong>in</strong>g a New<br />

<strong>Century</strong> of Gifted Education: The Case for a Paradigm Shift. In his analysis, David<br />

cont<strong>in</strong>ues his ongo<strong>in</strong>g scrut<strong>in</strong>y of <strong>the</strong> gifted-child paradigm, this time <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> context<br />

of <strong>21st</strong>-century conditions. He considers <strong>the</strong> nature <strong>and</strong> shortcom<strong>in</strong>gs of current<br />

conceptions of giftedness as well as some o<strong>the</strong>r challenges to <strong>the</strong> effectiveness of<br />

work <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> field. He sets <strong>the</strong> stage by tak<strong>in</strong>g an excursion through <strong>the</strong> research on<br />

creativity <strong>and</strong> giftedness, pay<strong>in</strong>g special attention to <strong>the</strong> work of pioneers such as<br />

Paul Torrance <strong>and</strong> Joseph Renzulli. He also analyzes <strong>the</strong> strengths <strong>and</strong> weaknesses<br />

of compet<strong>in</strong>g paradigms <strong>in</strong> gifted education, emphasiz<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> limitations of <strong>the</strong><br />

essentialist conception 3 <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> possible fit of <strong>the</strong> talent development framework<br />

with <strong>the</strong> <strong>21st</strong>-century socioeconomic <strong>and</strong> cultural context.<br />

Rol<strong>and</strong> Persson exercises his penchant for big-picture th<strong>in</strong>k<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> his chapter,<br />

Human Nature: The Unpredictable Variable <strong>in</strong> Eng<strong>in</strong>eer<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> Future. He<br />

temporarily backs away from <strong>the</strong> specifics of giftedness, talent development, <strong>and</strong><br />

creativity to explore <strong>the</strong> bigger issue of human nature itself. Part of <strong>the</strong> analysis<br />

br<strong>in</strong>gs forth <strong>the</strong> somewhat troubl<strong>in</strong>g possibility that not even <strong>the</strong> gifted <strong>and</strong> talented<br />

have as much control over life’s events as <strong>the</strong>y th<strong>in</strong>k <strong>the</strong>y do, <strong>and</strong> that <strong>the</strong>y might<br />

have even more difficulty than most because <strong>the</strong>y are often marg<strong>in</strong>alized due to <strong>the</strong>ir<br />

differences from <strong>the</strong> ma<strong>in</strong>stream. He suggests that we must come to terms with <strong>the</strong>se<br />

limitations <strong>in</strong> order to be more effective <strong>in</strong> exert<strong>in</strong>g our shap<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong>fluences over <strong>the</strong><br />

powerful trends <strong>and</strong> issues of <strong>the</strong> <strong>21st</strong> century. Social cohesion <strong>and</strong> ethical awareness<br />

must come <strong>in</strong>to play if we are to nudge globalization <strong>in</strong> positive directions.<br />

Paula Olszewski-Kubilius, Rena Subotnik, <strong>and</strong> Frank Worrell draw some<br />

<strong>in</strong>trigu<strong>in</strong>g connections between <strong>the</strong>ir <strong>in</strong>fluential mega-model for talent development<br />

<strong>and</strong> <strong>21st</strong>-century conditions <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir chapter titled, The Role of Doma<strong>in</strong>s <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

Conceptualization of <strong>Talent</strong>. The complexity of <strong>21st</strong>-century globalization exerts<br />

strong <strong>in</strong>fluences on talent development, which was complex enough even <strong>in</strong> far<br />
