FOREWORD<br />

macro-opportunities, which are unprecedented circumstances that can lead to<br />

significant advances <strong>in</strong> well-be<strong>in</strong>g for billions of people around <strong>the</strong> world. A focus<br />

chapter <strong>in</strong>cludes a 3-D model portray<strong>in</strong>g globalization as an enormous wave with<br />

macro-opportunities on top <strong>and</strong> macroproblems on <strong>the</strong> underside of <strong>the</strong> wave. If<br />

we develop <strong>the</strong> knowledge, skills, <strong>and</strong> dispositions required for deal<strong>in</strong>g with <strong>the</strong><br />

complexities of <strong>21st</strong>-century trends <strong>and</strong> issues, we may be able to leap to <strong>the</strong> crest<br />

of <strong>the</strong> wave <strong>and</strong> capitalize on <strong>the</strong> macro-opportunities. If not, we may be crushed<br />

underneath <strong>the</strong> wave by a comb<strong>in</strong>ation of macroproblems. A part of <strong>the</strong> analysis<br />

highlights arguments about societal collapse generated by scholars <strong>in</strong> 15 different<br />

discipl<strong>in</strong>es. Each of <strong>the</strong>se prom<strong>in</strong>ent scholars argue that current conditions could<br />

lead to <strong>the</strong> collapse of societal <strong>in</strong>stitutions some time <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>21st</strong> century.<br />

The stream of consciousness prompted by review<strong>in</strong>g chapters <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong>se two volumes<br />

made me realize that today’s world is a much different place than it was when most<br />

of <strong>the</strong> <strong>the</strong>ories that guide today’s education system were developed. The only th<strong>in</strong>g<br />

that has rema<strong>in</strong>ed constant is change, <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> focus of <strong>the</strong>se two unique volumes<br />

will help you, as it has helped me, see that to move forward with new ideas we must<br />

consider change with<strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> larger context of creativity, globalization, technology,<br />

<strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>terdiscipl<strong>in</strong>ary nature of knowledge. The stream of consciousness also<br />

rem<strong>in</strong>ded me that creativity, globalization, technology, <strong>and</strong> what takes place <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

larger world affects every one of us every day <strong>and</strong> that is a good th<strong>in</strong>g. We all live on<br />

<strong>the</strong> same planet <strong>and</strong> we all have a responsibility to contribute our gifts <strong>and</strong> talents to<br />

mak<strong>in</strong>g this small planet a better place.<br />
