After the Shillong Peak the next destination is Elephant Falls which is 12 km away from
here. The visiting timing is 10 AM to 6 PM. So have to reach there before 6 PM for
sightseeing the splendid waterfall. You can hire a taxi or a cab, and if you are feeling hungry
then you can stay and can take some snacks. You are surprised by the name, yeah! Most
people are surprised. The name is not given by the Khasi, the original name was Ka kshaid
lai pateng khohsiew (three steps waterfalls) which was given by Khasi, that means the
fall has three succeeded rocks. The Khasi named the places by which they can relate. The
new name was given by the British because of the rock near the waterfall that resembles
an elephant, that rock was demolished in an earthquake in 1897. But the name hasn’t
changed. It is still known by the same name.
The first fall is broad and hidden between the trees; second fall is tamed and negligible in
the winters, when the water level recedes. The third and last fall is the tallest. It has clean
water flowing over dark overhanging rocks without any particular forms. The steep steps
can be dangerous for the kids and elders.
