Tuberculosis <strong>Disease</strong> This is an infectious disease that affects the lungs<br />

and other parts of the body caused by<br />

mycobacterium tuberculosis.<br />

Ursodeoxycholic<br />

This is an oral medicati<strong>on</strong> that can be given to<br />

patients with PSC (Primary sclerosing cholangitis, a<br />

chr<strong>on</strong>ic liver disease characterised by inflammati<strong>on</strong><br />

and fibrosis of the bile ducts inside and outside the<br />

liver.) to protect the liver and prevent bowel<br />

cancer<br />

Uveitis <strong>Disease</strong> This is inflammati<strong>on</strong> of the uvea in the eye.<br />

Validated Test If something has been validated, it means it has<br />

been proven to be an accurate measure of what it<br />

claims to be measuring. For example, a disease<br />

severity index will be validated <strong>on</strong>ce it is proven to<br />

be measuring disease severity accurately.<br />

Vedolizumab Medicati<strong>on</strong> A biological (biotechnologically produced) drug<br />

used to treat IBD. It is given to the patient through<br />

a drip straight into the bloodstream.<br />

VSL#3 Medicati<strong>on</strong> This is a probiotic (live microorganisms which when<br />

administered in adequate amounts c<strong>on</strong>fer a health<br />

benefit <strong>on</strong> the host) which has shown promise for<br />

treating pouchitis.<br />

Weaned Medicati<strong>on</strong> If a medicati<strong>on</strong> is weaned, it is taken off gradually<br />

and not suddenly. This has to be d<strong>on</strong>e in the case<br />

of steroids because sudden stopping of steroids<br />

can have serious side effects.<br />
