John’s Jottings
Welcome to Woodstock Park from The Club Secretary
Good afternoon everyone. We welcome to Woodstock the players, officials and supporters of Peacehaven
& Telscombe and also the match officials.
We played Peacehaven & Telscombe in mid-December and came away with a slightly flattering 6-2 victory.
The home sides problems have been well documented and on the day they played with a number of
youngsters in the side. For two thirds of the match they gave a good account of themselves and at one
stage, just after half time, went 2-1 up. However, tiredness and our greater experience finally told and we
returned home with all three points. On Saturday they earned their first point of 2016 with a 1-1 draw at
home to Tooting & Mitcham. This was an excellent point against a team that I personally rate as one of
the best we have played this season. Tuesday night they played Molesey, another team that has impressed
me this season. They took an 18 th minute lead but conceded two goals just before half time and
that is the way it finished.
Our last home game saw us complete a double over East Grinstead Town. The first half was fairly even
but we generally bossed the second. We left it late though! New signing from Whitstable Town, Michael
Hurcomb, who only came on in the 78 th minute, scored the winner with 89 minutes on the clock.
Last Saturday it was the long trip to Guernsey that was made even longer with fog delaying the outbound
flight. In the end the players got to the ground with no time for a proper warm up or any of the normal
preparations that would normally take place on match days. Adding to this the hanging around for a few
hours at the airport it was no surprise that Guernsey looked the team more likely to win. The match eventually
got under way one and a half hours late! If we had taken some of our chances it would have been
a lot closer than the 3-0 final score line. The attendance at Guernsey was 804 which was their fourth
highest of the season – Ourselves and Peacehaven & Telscombe could do amazing things with the income
that level of support would generate! The support from our twenty to thirty fans that were at the
ground was (as usual) amazing. Thanks to everyone who made the effort to travel. The tremendous support
did not go unnoticed amongst the Guernsey faithful who only had good things to say about it. One
thing that our supporters who particularly took a liking to Roary (their mascot) may not know is that he
originally was not going to be able to attend the game. He flew out on the early Saturday flight to Gatwick
to attend a friend’s birthday party in London. Because of the fog the plane was unable to land and flew
back to Guernsey where he decided to abandon his plans and go to the game instead. Whilst writing
about the Guernsey trip and on behalf of everybody at the club I would like to thank Mark Broad for taking
all the kit to Guernsey in his car. This was a tremendous help and meant that far more could be taken
than would have been possible if it had to have gone on the plane with the players.
Next match for Sittingbourne is next Saturday when we visit Merstham to play Walton Casuals. On Bank
Holiday Monday we play Faversham Town here. This is a 3:00pm kick off.
From the Manager
It was a long day last Saturday away to Guernsey. With the flight being delayed by
3 hours and us having to rush both too and from the airport with little time to spare,
it ended up being a stressful day. I thought as though it was a game of two half’s
with Guernsey having the better of the first period and us controlling the game for
large portions especially possession wise in the second half. We had many chances
and should have converted at least a couple of these however it wasn’t meant
to be and we were caught out twice on the counter attack against the run of
play. The 15 or so supporters that travelled were fantastic and for officials of
Guernsey saying they are the best away fans to visit this season speaks volumes.
7 games remaining and our aim Is to finish with as many points as possible. With
one eye on next year there will be one or two more additions and that hopefully
will make us stronger going forward and put us in a good place come next season.
PEACEHAVEN & TELSCOMBE
A BRIEF HISTORY
Formed in 1923 following the merger of Peacehaven
Rangers and Telscombe Tye. The newly
formed club originally played on a piece of land
called The Tye, owned by the local squire.
Peacehaven (the abridged name is most commonly
used) joined Division Two of the Sussex County
League in 1969-70 after winning the Brighton
League with a 100% record.
In 1975-76 they won promotion as runners-up to
Selsey. After finishing as runners-up to Shoreham in
1977/78, Peacehaven lifted what was to be the first
of seven Division One titles the following season.
After finishing a disappointing 12th in 1979/80, the
club once again were runners-up, this time to Pagham,
in 1980/81, before adding a further two
League titles in 1981/82 and 1982/83.
A comparatively mediocre spell then ensued but a
third runners-up spot in 1990/91, when they lost
out on goal difference to champions Littlehampton
Town, was to herald a period of dominance in the
County League.
Between 1992 and 1997, Peacehaven lifted the Division
One championship on four occasions, and in
the other two seasons finished 4th (1993/94) and
3rd (1996/97). The club also won the League Challenge
Cup in 1991 and 1992, and enjoyed great runs
in the FA Cup and FA Vase.
Peacehaven’s best run in the FA Cup was in
1990/91, when they reached the 4th Qualifying
Round, only to lose 2-3 at Tiverton Town. The club
reached the 5th Round of the FA Vase in 1992/93
before losing to Gresley Rovers; and beaten by the
same score at Clitheroe at the quarter final stage in
95/96.
April 1995 saw the first ever Sunday fixture in the
County League, when just over a 1,000 spectators
saw Peacehaven beat eventual runners-up Stamco
(later St. Leonards, now defunct) at Piddinghoe Avenue.
The irony was that it was the runners-up who
were promoted to the Southern League at the end
of that season, whilst with their emphasis on the
team rather than their facilities, Peacehaven had
little hope of further progression.
That lack of ambition, foresight, and dwindling finances
ultimately told, with Peacehaven relegated
to Division Two at the end of the 1997/98 season.
After three seasons however, they returned to the
top flight as runners-up to Southwick and also won
the Division Two League Cup.
Sadly though, Peacehaven were relegated once
more at the end of the 2002/03 season, with attendances
plummeting to the lowest in Division Two.
The following season, 2004/05 saw an improvement
in the latter but things were no better on the pitch as
the Magpies were relegated to Division Three and
Intermediate football for the first time in the club’s
history - something that would have been unthinkable
just ten years earlier.
The club won promotion at the first attempt, two
points ahead of runners-up Lingfield. After two seasons
of agonisingly missing promotion on the last
game of the season, the club's return to the top
flight was finally secured in 2009 - winning Division
2 for the first time and becoming one of the few
sides to win all three divisions of the County
League.
Most pundits predicted 2009-10 to be a season of
consolidation, but the first season back in Division 1
nearly saw Peacehaven complete a famous treble -
winning the R.U.R. and League Cup's, but finishing
as Runners-Up in the League to Whitehawk.
The club continued their progression over the next
few seasons with a strategy to redevelop the ground
and rebuild links with the community. The 2012/13
season started with a plan to aim for promotion due
to the extra places available as the Ryman South
league was to be expanded.
In the Vase saw they were narrowly defeated in the
fifth round away to Larkhall Athletic. A very busy
season for the club, with 64 first team games, ended
with Shaun Saunders and Tony Coade’s team being
crowned Sussex champions for the eighth time and
succeeding in their bid for promotion to Ryman
South.
Season 2013/14 saw Peacheaven break the points’
record for the Ryman South league to gain promotion
to the Ryman Premier League – the highest level
the club had ever competed at, and they also won
the Sussex Senior Cup for the first time in 23 years.
The increased cost of running a team at this level
meant that cost cutting measures were put in place.
New chairman Brian Suckling and his new management
team worked hard at turning around the club’s
finances but on the field the team were relegated
back to the Ryman South League.
Simon Colbran took over from Darren Freeman
during October 2015. Recently the playing budget
had to be halved leading to the loss of some senior
players . The club is in the relegation zone but all is
not yet lost.
NON-LEAGUE has received plenty of positive coverage from the national media that normally disregards it this
season so it was a shame to see negative headlines dominating coverage over the weekend.
On our Non-League Paper front page, we covered the story concerning Martin Potton, chairman of United Counties
League side Wellingborough Town, who had been banned after being found guilty of telling referee Mary Harmer
that she “wasn’t fit enough to referee a woman’s match, let alone a men’s game”.
Then news came out on Sunday that police and the Football Association were investigating after Altrincham’s Josh
Ginnelly reported he was racially abused in their game at Barrow.
These sort of headlines are not good for Non-League, clubs are struggling enough as it is to entice people through
the turnstiles.
The grass-roots game has long been known for its general friendliness between supporters, players and management.
That’s part of what makes Non-League so special.
But we’re in danger of losing it. If incidents like these start becoming the norm, people will be turned off.
One of the big reasons people don’t attend Non-League games is because it is seen by many as 'living in the past'
while others think the game at our level hasn’t evolved.
They couldn’t be more wrong but stories like the one with Potton only feed into those theories. The Doughboys’
chairman insists he didn’t make the comments which were reported to the FA by Lindsay England, founder of
equality group Just A Ball Game.
England attended Town's UCL game against AFC Rushden & Diamonds back in April 2015 and said the comments
aimed at Harmer came flying out after Wellingborough went 7-0 down.
When contacted by my colleague Sam Elliott, Potton claimed he had been “hung out to dry” by the official and the
BBC who, he claims, purposely published the story of Tuesday March 8 – International Women’s Day – to cause
controversy.
“There was a group us – what she says was said, but not by me,” Potton said. “There’s an agenda there. She has
picked me out of the line up as I’m the only club official and has singled me out because the others were just everyday
fans.
“There was banter flying around and a tongue-in-cheek comment was made. This has now got out of hand. Why
didn’t she just come to me and allow me the chance to explain myself?
Instead she runs to Rushden and then to the FA.
“No, I don’t think women should be allowed to referee in the men’s
game. That is a personal opinion and that, I’m afraid, is my view. It’s not
because I am a sexist, it is because of other factors. They get intimidated
very easily and I don’t agree with it.”
It may be a personal opinion, but it’s one that most, thankfully, don’t
share. There are good referees (surprising I know!) and bad referees.
Gender has little to do with it.
As the popularity of women’s football increases, more females will seek
to get involved with the beautiful game. Whether that be the ladies’ side
or the men’s game, it can only be a positive.
Then the news about Ginnelly came out and once again, Non-League
was dragged into a racism row. Grimsby Town defender Toto Nsiala and
Gresley forward Gary Ricketts were also allegedly subject of racist comments
recently.
It would be naive to sweep these under the carpet and claim Non-
League is 99 per cent pure. Much like society in general, it definitely isn’t.
But we must do our best to uphold the integrity of the game at our
level. If you see or hear anything that’s not right, tell somebody.
Dulwich Hamlet displayed the true Non-League spirit of community by
playing a Syrian refugee awareness game against FC Assyria last week.
Non-League has long been known for its inclusion and welcoming attitude
- we need to make sure we don’t lose it.
EQUALITY -
“The Ryman Football League strongly support recent FA statement that there should be a
zero tolerance approach against racism and all forms of discrimination. Accordingly any
form of discriminatory abuse whether it be based on race or ethnicity, sexual orientation,
gender, faith, age, ability or any other form of abuse will be reported to The Football Association
for action by that Association.” (Useful numbers:-The FA 0800 085 0508 / Kick it
Ryman League
Division 1 South Table
Table is up to and including Thursday 17th March 2016
Match Reports
By Tony Rickson
Saturday 5th March 2016
Ryman League Div 1 South
Sittingbourne 2 East Grinstead Town 1, att 110
Only four of the team who lost at home to Sittingbourne
just over a fortnight ago had retained
their places.
One of the new signings, ex-England under-19 international
Moses Ashikodi, who once played for
Watford in the Premier League, was making his
debut and he took just five minutes to make an impact.
Gregory used his pace to get behind the right
side of the Sittingbourne defence before pulling it
back for Ashikodi to do the rest.
Sittingbourne hit back and the visiting keeper
turned over a shot by Lee and saved at full length
from Wells, though East Grinstead were still lively
going forward and Adam Molloy had to tip over a
fierce 25-yard shot from Emptage.
Sittingbourne equalised just after the half-hour
when a long throw-in was cleared to Jack Steventon.
He played it back in, both George Crimmen
and Ita were involved in the move before Lee engineered
a chance for himself by ghosting past a defender.
His shot was saved but Carlse was lurking
in the right place, taking one touch before hammering
home a right-foot shotIt capped an excellent
first half by Carlse against the club he left to join
Sittingbourne.
The second half was dominated by Sittingbourne,
but East Grinstead had early chances with Molloy
saving at close range and Lee hitting his own post
with an interception of a cross.
But really the pressure was mounting at the other
end, Steventon hitting the top of the bar with a
header, Wells having a couple of efforts saved and
the ever-dangerous Richardson just wide with a
header from Ita’s cross.
East Grinstead might have thought they’d done
enough for a point, but so did Tooting the previous
week, only to be undone right at the end. Again it
was Richardson who won the key header in the
opposition box and Hurcomb, who impressed in his
brief time on the pitch, was in the right place in the
ensuing scramble to stab the ball over the line for a
90th minute winner.
Sittingbourne: Molloy, Brunt, Carlse, Whibley,
Crimmen, Steventon, Cralse (Hughes 65 mins) Lee
(Wright 78 mins), Cornwell (Hurcomb 78 mins),
Wells, Ita
Saturday 12th March 2016
Ryman League Div 1 South
Guernsey 3 Sittingbourne 0 att 804
Sittingbourne had been up since before dawn, and
hung around at Gatwick for a flight that was delayed
for three hours because of fog, and finally
arrived with less than an hour to prepare for the
game. It was the third time out of four that Sittingbourne
have endured frustrating delays at Gatwick
just getting to the Channel Islands.
Kick-off was put back 75 minutes but that only just
allowed the match to be squeezed in before the
players were hassled straight out of the ground afterwards
to get to the airport for the last flight of the
day back to Gatwick. It was, travel-wise, a mess.
Guernsey started at a furious pace with Adam
Molloy forced to dive full-length to his right to save
in the first minute and then Allen, leading scorer
throughout the league, rattling the bar from fully 30
yards soon after but with just eight minutes played
Allen expertly finished off a clever move from right
to left that opened up the Sittingbourne defence.
Molloy denied Guernsey further goals, making two
tremendous first half saves, while the home side
also missed a couple of other good chances.
But Sittingbourne created chances too for Miles
Cornwell and the lively Tom Carlse, and Steven Ita
always a threat to the home defence with his neat
footwork and dribbling skills.
Sittingbourne started the second half well,
Carlse hit the bar in the 47th minute from Tom
Brunt’s excellent pass, and Ita earned just a corner
after a brilliant run took him into the heart of Guernsey’s
penalty area. But Guernsey scored a killer
second in the 65th minute. Molloy again did well to
save at Legg’s feet as he broke clear, but the ball
ballooned up and sub Black reacted quickest to
head home.
There were further chances for Carlse and the hard
-working Jack Steventon, while the Guernsey keeper
made his best save of the afternoon from a Conrad
Lee pile-driver, but on 82 minutes the excellent
Allen picked up the ball in his half and beat the defenced
to expertly stroke home his second goal of
the match.
Guernsey, a very welcoming and well-organised
club, deserved the win its a pretty tough call to
come away from their ground with anything – Sittingbourne
haven’t managed it yet, anyway.
Though at least it was nice to read that a Guernsey
fan tweeted that Sittingbourne had bought the best
supporters seen this season with them.
That’s an important consolation.
Our core business is to provide cost management services
to the construction industry. Our client base includes
subcontractors, contractors, corporates, private
businesses and public sector organisations. We adopt
industry accepted approaches to cost management/
procurement. We apply these diligently and conscientiously
to each project.
Our staff regularly undertake CPD training and university
studies in order to keep abreast of developments
in the industry. In addition to our collective experience
and expertise, Our software systems enable us to deliver
efficient services to our clients. We are also currently
looking at ways in which we can further benefit
our clients using Building Information Model [BIM].
Many of QS Consults’ clients are already involved in the construction industry with
our services complementing their own. By way of example with public sector clients
we can prepare cost studies (including market testing) to enable them to make
more informed decisions regarding proposed projects and estates strategies.
On the other hand for contractors and sub-contractor’s we provide estimating and
tendering services allowing them to focus on their core business of delivering construction
projects. Just some of our projects are shown below:
Some clients we work with may have never been involved in construction before
and may be considering a one-off construction project. As quantity surveyors we
can provide guidance on managing costs and how to minimise costs risks associated
with construction projects. Some clients we work with may have never been involved
From the Programme editor
I’d like to welcome everyone from Peacehaven & Telscombe. Peacehaven & Telscombe have had a
tur-bulent couple of seasons so far as money troubles begin to bite. Through necessity they are a
young team and through our own youngsters we know that this is not necessarily a bad thing! More
about a lo-cal club with financial problems below.
Talking to many of you the trip to Guernsey was one of the highlights of the season. They are always
very welcoming, and having the chance to spend a few days on the Island is a great plus.
One of their committee members came up to me at the end of the game and said what a lovely club we
are with great supporters and its always a pleasure to see us, so supporters give yourselves a pat on the
back!
I hear that the ladies rugby team were very entertaining! And I expect that you are already planning next
years sojourn to the Island. Just a pity that the fog caused a few problems including my flight on Friday
which was delayed a couple of hours. It was also a pity that not much was open, although I did get to see
the aquarium!
At first glance having no VAT payable on the Island sounds great but in practice, prices, (except for the
Vodka and whisky that I bought), were really not any cheaper, some prices, in Boots for example, were
actually dearer. The locals say its because transport costs are added on.
I had a good chat to Deputy Mike O’Hara, Minister of Culture & Leisure for the States of Guernsey, and it
was great to see that he is a wholehearted supporter of the club.
On the local football front I see that Ashford Utd have been informed by the league that “they have no alternative
due to recent events that the club will have to suffer a 10 point reduction until AUFC exonerates itself through the
courts in the next couple of weeks.” Ashford were 3rd in the table until the deduction. According to companies house
web site Ashford United Football Club limited are in receivership. Their local paper believes that they are £150,000 in
debt.
Sheppey Utd are second in the Kent Invicta League. Two clubs go up in that league to the Southern Counties East
Football League Those who have applied, as well as Sheppey Utd, are Bearsted, Glebe, AC London, Lydd Town and
Meriden VP. Those in contention from the SCEFL to join our league provided they meet ground grading are: Greenwich
Borough who are currently top, and Hollands & Blair who are second. Next come Lordswood, Ashford Utd and
Corinthian, all between 19 and 21 points behind the leading pair with between 7 and 10 games still to play.
Just three home games left, now for us, two of which are local derbies against Faversham Town and Hythe Town.
Our away match at Chatham Town on Saturday 16th April is free entry, and that is followed by our last match of the
season at home to Molesey. The awards evening is being held straight after that game.
Give your usual rousing support for the Brickies and enjoy the game!
IF you had gone into a coma three years ago
and woken up recently just before the FA Vase
semi-final draw, you’d have been asking a lot of
questions.
How exactly did Hereford United and Salisbury
City fall so much that they’re now competing in
a competition for clubs at Step 5, 6 and 7?
Of course, the two clubs matched in the Vase
semi-final were Hereford FC and Salisbury FC,
not United and City, and they face off in the first
leg at Edgar Street on Saturday.
The pair themselves went into somewhat of a
coma after terrible mismanagement meant we
lost two great Non-League names.
With so many phoenix clubs successfully
fighting back in recent times, there was hope
that Hereford and Salisbury would be supporting
ambitious clubs once more.
Not surprisingly, as I write this, Hereford are top
of the Midland League Premier and Salisbury
are at the Wessex League Premier summit.
Of course with any story like this, some people
are supportive and others scoff at it. The reaction
to the pair drawing each other in the semifinal
was mixed.
Some were pleased they wouldn’t be meeting
in the final against either Morpeth Town or
Bowers & Pitsea while others weren’t happy
that clubs of their size were at this stage, taking
up a slot that could have gone to a ‘proper’
Step 5 or 6 club.
Just a few years back when Sholing won the
Vase after taking voluntary relegation from the
Southern League the season before, they were
criticised for their decision with some even
claiming they did it as they planned to win the
Vase.
If only it was that easy! The Vase is the most
unpredictable and difficult FA competition so to
win it is a fantastic achievement, regardless of
the club’s size. Success often attracts detractors.
I followed and reported on the slow demise of
Hereford United. The club was a farce towards
the end of its life and from my first conversation
with Hereford FC chairman Jon Hale, you could
tell he had the passion and the plan.
Ian Ridley has helped spearhead Salisbury FC
and both clubs are being run by the right people
- what’s there to dislike about that?
Two weeks ago we had a brilliant column in
The NLP from Bulls great Ricky George, who
scored arguably Hereford’s most important goal
ever as they beat Newcastle United in the FA
Cup third round in 1972 - one of the biggest upsets
ever.
George still loves the Bulls and said: “The
words of the club’s motto, ‘our greatest glory
lies not in never having fallen but rising when
we fall’, would never be more appropriate than
now.
“Credit goes to every single person who has
helped in the emotional re-birth of the Bulls, but
the ghosts of the Giant Killers and the hallowed
Meadow End at Edgar Street where the two
goals against Newcastle were scored, will forever
play a part in uniting the supporters of this
famous old club.”
Salisbury City’s recent past was littered with
difficulties and problems but happier times have
arrived under the management of Steve
Claridge.
Vice-chairman Ridley said: “Both Hereford United
and Salisbury City were failing clubs who let
a lot of creditors down, including in City’s case,
plenty of unfortunate season ticket holders
whose money they still took as the club was
going under.
“We have paid a price, believe me. A lot of people
and companies were sceptical about the
club and would not touch it again. It had been a
hard sell this season at times, particularly early
on.
“We’ll suffer the odd barb with a smile, I hope.
They will matter not when our wonderful Whites
- we’ll be in blue, actually - step out at Edgar
Street. Such moments make all the heartache
and hassle in running a club worthwhile.”
Whatever your views on both clubs, Hereford
and Salisbury are back in good hands and
making some more history - surely that’s only
good for Non-League?
