NOTES SCHEDULE STRENGTH • USF’s strength of schedule ranking is 46 according to the NCAA. The Bulls have played eight teams ranked in the top 60 RPI; No. 11 SMU, No. 13 Kentucky, No. 32 Seton Hall, No. 40 Cincinnati, No. 53 South Carolina, No. 54 Temple and No. 57 UConn. ALL ABOUT ‘MAL All of the important notes about USF freshman guard Jahmal McMuray. • McMurray was a unanimous selection to The American All-Rookie Team joining John Egbunu and teammate Chris Perry as the only other Bulls to receive the award. • McMurray has been named the conference rookie of the week two times and the honor roll twice. • McMurray has either led or tied for the team lead in points in 15 games. • His team-leading scoring average of 15.1 points per game ranks sixth in the conference, second among freshmen. He also ranks T-20th in scoring in the nation among freshmen. • USF has not had a freshman lead the team in scoring since Dominique Jones during the 2007-08 season when he averaged 17.1. • McMurray finished third in The American with 17.0 points per game in conference-only games. • McMurray is in second place on the USF freshman scoring list, 47 points shy of passing Dominique Jones (531, 2007-08). • McMurray has made the second-most 3-pointers as a freshman at USF with 69. The record is 72 by Radenko Dobras in 1988-89. • McMurray has played the most minutes of any freshman in USF history with 1,126. • McMurray scored a career-high 30 points in USF’s 71-62 win at Houston on Jan. 23. It was the most points in a game for USF since Corey Allen Jr. scored 32 at Tulsa on Jan. 31, 2015. It was the most points by a USF freshman since Dominique Jones scored 31 vs. Seton Hall on Feb. 26, 2008. Jones scored 30, three times as a freshman. The freshman scoring record is 33 points, set by Radenko Dobras on Feb. 11, 1989 against Jacksonville. • In his collegiate debut, McMurray scored a team-high 21 points against Troy with the help of a 5-of-15 effort from 3-point range. His 15 attempts tied for the second-most in school history with Derrick Sharp who attempted 15 vs. Oral Roberts (12/7/91). It was the most attempts since Melvin Buckley’s 16 vs. Stetson (11/27/06), the USF school record. RUBEN GUERRERO WINS SPORTSMANSHIP AWARD Sophomore center Ruben Guerrero was the recipient of the American Athletic Conference Sportsmanship Award on Wednesday. • The Spain native, was selected by the conference coaches because of the respect he shows for his teammates, coaches and opposing players. • Guerrero has volunteered with members of the basketball team at the Children’s Cancer Center – Tampa, Moffitt Children’s Hospital and Miami Rescue Mission. • A business major, Guerrero boasts a team-best cummulative GPA of 3.75. SIGNEE, FELIZ, GETS NIKE HOOP SUMMIT INVITE • Andres Feliz (West Oaks Academy), who signed with USF this past fall, was one of 12 players selected to the World Team that will play a team of U.S. 19-and-under stars in the 2016 Nike Hoop Summit. The game will be played April 9 at the Moda Center in Portland, Oregon. The guard from the Dominican Republic was the leading scorer for its national team in last summer’s U-19 FIBA World Championships. He averaged 18.9 points, 5.0 rebounds and 3.7 assists. • Past participants include LSU’s Ben Simmons, North Carolina’s Joel Berry and 178 NBA draft picks. THE COUSINS’ IMPROVEMENT • Jaleel Cousins knew that the only way to increase his production from last year to this year was to lose weight. The only way for him to lose weight was to do the thing he hates the most... run. That is the most in a season since Kentrell Gransberry recorded 15 double-doubles during the 2007-08 season. • For the first time since Jaleel has been at USF, his older brother DeMarcus got to see him play when the Bulls played at Tulane on Jan. 27. The Sacramento Kings played at the New Orleans Pelicans the next day which allowed Demarcus and his mother, along with fellow Kentucky product Rajon Rondo, stop by to see the Bulls win the game 73-60. Cousins had 17 points, nine rebounds and five blocks. WHO ARE THOSE “GRAY SUITS?” • Coaches Larry Brown, Mick Cronin and Kelvin Sampson have all been impressed with the “gray suits” at the end of the bench. Each have made reference to them in postgame press conferences or to Orlando Antigua in passing. “After the game, I shook hands with more (USF) guys in gray warmups instead of green-and-white uniforms than I can remember,’’ said SMU’s Brown on Feb. 7 So who are the five individuals who are sitting on the bench in gray warm-ups during home games? Nunez’ minutes played this season has surpassed his total minutes played during his last three seasons combined (403). • The last newcomer to lead USF in minutes played was Dominique Jones (35.0) during the 2007-08 season. • The last time two newcomers led USF in minutes played was during the 1997-98 season with Scott Johnson (28.5) and Shaddrick Jenkins (29.2). 50 REBOUNDS VS. MEMPHIS • USF’s 50 rebounds at Memphis on Jan. 16 was a season high and the most in a game since putting up 52 against Bowling Green on Dec. 21, 2012. • The Bulls outrebounded the Tigers 50-41. HOT SHOOTING VS. JACKSONVILLE • USF shot 63.3 percent (31-49) from the field in its 88-75 win over Jacksonville on Dec. 16. It was the Bulls’ best shooting performance since shooting a school-record 64.7 percent (33-51) from the field against Stetson on Nov. 26, 2004. USF last shot 60 percent on Feb. 8, 2012 vs. Pittsburgh. NOTES players in double-figures for the first time since Nov. 12, 2013 vs. Bethune-Cookman (Corey Allen Jr. - 21, Victor Rudd - 14, Chris Perry - 13, Musa Abdul-Aleem - 12, Martino Brock - 10). • USF shot a season-best 56.3 percent (9-16) from 3-point range. It was the first time the Bulls shot over 50 percent from beyondthe-arc since Dec. 23, 2014 vs. SLU (7-13, 53.8 percent). • USF outrebounded Jacksonville by 14, 45-21. The last time USF outrebounded a team by at least 20 was Dec. 22, 2010 when it outrebounded Cleveland State by 23, 49-26, in a 69-62 loss. CONSECUTIVE DOUBLE-DOUBLES FOR COUSINS • Jaleel Cousins posted his first-career double-double on Nov. 21 vs. Boston (14 pts., 12 rebs.). He followed that game with a double-double vs. Albany on Nov. 24 (13 pts., 12 rebs.). It was the first time a USF player had recorded consecutive double-doubles since Victor Rudd in 2013. Rudd had 23 points and 14 rebounds against FGCU on Dec. 17, 2013 and then 19 points and 10 rebounds against Florida A&M on Dec. 19, 2013. FOR STARTERS PERRY DUNK SEALS WIN OVER ALBANY • With the Bulls’ trailing Albany 61-60 and nine seconds remaining, Chris Perry dunked the ball with a hand in his face to give USF a 62-61 lead. USF got the ball back via a Roddy Peters steal and then Jahmal McMurray hit one free throw as the Bulls won their first game of the season, 63-61. USF had trailed by as many as eight points, midway through the second half. USF’S 10 THREES, PERRY’S REBOUNDS VS. TROY • USF’s 10 made 3-pointers vs. Troy was the most by the program in a regulation game since Nov. 23, 2010 when it made 10 vs. Liberty. The Bulls made 10 in an overtime game at Tulsa last season (1/31/15). Last season it took the Bulls three games before they made their 10th 3-pointer of the season. • Chris Perry recorded 13 points and 17 rebounds vs. Troy for his sixth-career double-double. The 17 rebounds were the most in a game for USF since 2010 when Ron Anderson Jr. had 17 vs. Liberty (11/23/10). Perry was named to the conference honor roll on Nov. 16.
