WE ARE MALA
MALA studio is a Landscape Architecture and Urban Design practice that
provides high-end design and project management services across all sectors
and scales. The studio places a strong emphasis on creating site specific
designs founded on a process of strategic investigation and analysis.
We believe good design should be simple and respond directly to the site and
its user. For us, Landscape Architecture is ultimately about the environment
and people. We aspire to create dynamic and sustainable spaces that invite
people to engage with the world outside of their houses, offices, factories and
classrooms.
Our design process and creative drive is born from an open studio environment
where collaboration and freethinking inspire unique and high quality outcomes.
We are not afraid to experiment with new ideas or to push the design beyond
its initial brief.
MALA is a team of highly experienced designers who have worked on some of
the most high profile and award winning projects in recent times.
OUR PROJECTS
MALA studio has quickly established a broad cross section of clients and
projects since its establishment in 2014. We have worked across varying
scales from small residential courtyards and gardens to large scale mixed use
developments. We have designed expansive soft landscapes and wetland
systems as well as hardscape infrastructure, streetscape and shopping
centers. We pride ourselves on finding high-end design solutions for each and
every project we undertake regardless of size or budget. Here is a selection of
our most recent projects.
CLEC SITE: DOCKLANDS PARK
In 2015 Places Victoria engaged MALA to create a Master Plan for the
Cummunity Learning and Education Centre (CLEC) Site in Melbournes
Docklands. Stage One of the of the Master Plan was subsequently funded and
MALA developed and documented the design. The brief for Stage One was
to create a new park setting for the relocated 2015 M Pavilion on the corner
of Collins Street and Harbour Esplanade. Key features of the design include
hard and soft areas for the M Pavilion, two large tilted lawns, custom seating
elements, decrotive gardens and new feature trees. Stage One is currenty
under construction with completion due in June 2016.
MOORABBIN JUNCTION
In 2014 MALA undertook a submission to reimagine the Moorabbin Junction
retail hub in Melbourne’s South East. The design proposed to connect ground
level strip and boutique shopping precincts with podium level community
facilities, playgrounds, and food precincts via a series of public plazas,
walkways and amphitheater spaces. The submission drew on many ESD
initiatives including the filtration, and storage of storm water and grey water for
reuse to contribute urban greening. Extensive podium gardens, street level
rain gardens and horizontal gardens were designed for the site.
ROSENEATH DEVELOPMENT
In 2014 MALA studio was engaged to design and document the public,
communal and private open spaces for a new multi level mixed use
development in Clifton Hill. Working closely with Fieldwork Architects MALA
undertook rigorous and in depth investigation and analysis in order to develop
an exciting and unique landscape design that enhances the residential
dwellings and provides a high level of communal amenity. The hero of the
project is two elevated, linear green spaces which simultaneously provide
private and shared gardens, seating, paths and breakout spaces. These
spaces also connect the development to the street and blur the line between
what is private and public.
THE LODGE
As part of the celebrations for the Centenary of Canberra MALA studio and
Inglis Architects undertook a submission to design a new official residence
for the Prime Minister of Australia on the shores of Lake Burley Griffin. An
imaginative and sensitive landscape was designed which embraced the
woodland setting and incorporated the private and official entertainment and
relaxation areas. The landscape elements included outdoor entertaining areas,
a private swimming pool area and tennis court, private outdoor entertaining
areas, areas for quiet reflection and relaxation, woodland sculpture walks
and rare wildflower gardens, a water gate and jetty, a kitchen garden, and car
parking and drop off areas.
RICHMOND DEVELOPMENT
In 2014 MALA was engaged to design and document the external spaces for
a high end private residence located in Richmond. The brief called for high
impact landscape spaces to compliment the bold use of materials selected by
the Architect. The three key spaces consisted of a double volume courtyard
space, an entrance garden and a roof top terrace. A series of raised planter
boxes, roof gardens and vertical gardens were designed in addition to
traditional garden spaces.
HORSE TRAINING COMPLEX
Located on the Mornington Peninsula, Pinecliff provides state of the art
facilities in horse training, and environmentally sustainable management
and landscape design. The original site of 50 hectares had been cleared for
grazing and the site has now been transformed by the creation of a system of
linked wetlands. These progressively filter waste water and enable its reuse
throughout the site. A new 7.6 megalitre dam provides the final stage of this
system. Water birds now flock to the site.
communal and private open spaces for a new multi-level mixed use
development in Fitzroy North. The project consists of 34 apartments and
ground level retail. The key landscape feature is a large central planted void
which acts to divide private and shared spaces whilst providing protection and
garden spaces. Images courtesy of Assemble Projects.
