Dear MACUL Conference Attendees, 

Welcome to the 40th MACUL Annual Conference! Wow, 40 years. We are excited 

that you have come to be a part of this incredible milestone event. And while 

many of the students you teach probably think that 40 is “old,” the majority of 

us realize that 40 is just hitting stride! This year you are invited to embrace the 

theme of Engage Learning by connecting with 

new resources, strategies, and professionals from 

Michigan and beyond. 

The three days of the Annual Conference are always full to the brim of a variety 

of events and activities. It’s an incredible time full of opportunities to learn and 

grow. Be sure to check out some of these awesome activities.

A first aid station is located in the front of the

Room Capacity 

Standing or sitting in aisles of session rooms is 

not permitted. All rooms are set to the maximum 

number of attendees allowed per the fire 

marshal. 

Age Restriction 

Children under the age of 18 (including infants), 

are not permitted in sessions, workshops, or the 

exhibit hall. However, students with a badge 

who are presenting will be permitted when 

accompanied by an adult chaperone.

SCECHs 

SCECH Credit 

SCECHs are offered at the 2016 MACUL Conference. Virtually all sessions are eligible this year, except 

those marked as no SCECH. The number of hours earned is based on the number of sessions attended. 

You must note on the form how many hours you have spent each day attending the eligible sessions in 

order to earn credit. 

A SCECH application form is located in your conference bag. BEFORE you leave the conference, take 

your completed form to the Help/SCECH Desk at the conference registration area. 

You must attend a minimum of three hours in order to be eligible for credit. If you do not attend a 

minimum of three contact hours, you have not met the State minimum requirement and will not be 

eligible for credit. 

A $10 application fee is required to apply for SCECHs. You must pay your $10 fee at the conference 

when you submit your application form. The application forms are only accepted on site during the 

conference and will not be accepted by mail or after the conclusion of the conference. Make sure you 

have your PIC written down. You will need it to turn in the SCECH forms and to receive the hours. 

At the conclusion of the event all forms will be reviewed for accuracy. Please make sure your first name, 

last name, PIC number, and email address EXACTLY match the login information for your State of MI 

MOECS account. If these do not match, your hours will not be successfully uploaded with the Department 

of Education. Two to four weeks after the MACUL conference you will receive an email from the 

Department of Education prompting you to complete a survey. Upon completion of this survey your 

hours will be awarded and will appear in your online account. You must complete this survey to receive 

your hours.

Session Styles 

Sessions are categorized by one of five session styles: 

Explore and Create: 60-minute sessions offered by an individual or team of facilitators focusing on 

an identified topic in which attendees bring their own devices, participate in guided hands-on activities 

and learn by doing. Session proposals must include all app, device, or software requirements 

in the session description. 

Hands-On Workshop: Two-hour sessions offered by an individual or a team of presenters in a lab 

with 24 Macintosh, Windows, or Chromebook computers, pre-loaded with software for the workshop. 

Participants will actively work with the software or process being explored. Presenters are 

responsible for providing sufficient software for each computer in the lab. Please note that participants 

pay an additional fee for these sessions. 

Listen and Learn: Traditional 60-minute sessions offered by an individual or a team of presenters. 

Sessions are informative, focusing on various aspects of educational technology. Attendees sit back 

and soak up the learning. 

Panel Session: 60-minute sessions highlighting Ed Tech topics and concepts. Moderator interacts 

with co-presenters on an informal panel. Panelists present different perspectives or experiences 

on the topic. Questions from the audience are encouraged, creating an interactive and dynamic 

environment. 

Participate and Share: 60-minute sessions offered by an individual or a team of presenters. Audience 

participants interact with the facilitator and other attendees as they learn. Social/informal in 

nature, these sessions focus on an identified topic. Attendees network and share ideas with likeminded 

peers.

Jaime evangelizes the power and potential of the web, technology, and Google 

tools as enabling and supporting capabilities in pursuit of creating powerful learning 

models. Jaime works with educational organizations around the world, helping them find ways to 

improve the quality of education by using and enabling technology capabilities. Jaime is a member 

of the Google for Education Team and works with Google Fiber, the Google Policy Team, the YouTube 

Team, and the Google Capital Team.

Shannon is a teacher, librarian, and technology integration specialist. She now speaks 

and consults around the world on education, librarianship, technology, social media, 

and making a difference in education and the lives of others. She is also the Skype Education Ambassador, 

part of the Best Keynote group, and the author of the award winning The Library Voice blog and 

enjoys writing for various blogs, journals and other forums. 

Rushton Hurley 

Executive Director, Next Vista for Learning 

The Lyrics of Success

Rushton Hurley has been a Japanese language teacher, principal of an online high 

school, teacher trainer, and speaker. He is the executive director of NextVista.org 

(a free educational video library by and for students and teachers) and ran the MERIT program at the 

Krause Center for Innovation (tinyurl.com/KCI-MERIT). Rushton trains teachers at schools and keynotes 

at conferences around the world on affordable technology, the power of multimedia, and the professional 

perspectives and experiences of teachers at all levels.

Assistant Principal for Technology Integration, L&N STEM Academy, Knox County 

Schools (TN) 

Tim Childers serves as an Assistant Principal at the L&N STEM Academy in Knoxville, 

Tennessee. He was listed as one of TechSmith‘s “20 to Watch” educators in 2011 and 

was a 2012 keynote speaker at the Mid-South Technology Conference in Memphis, TN.

Elizabeth Christiansen 

Instructional Coach, EAC Consulting 

In 2014, Elizabeth Christiansen spent two months aboard the JOIDES Resolution as 

Education and Outreach Officer. Elizabeth entered classrooms and other venues 

around the world via video link between the ship and shore, to promote STEM, 

blended learning, and NGSS-aligned classroom activities. To date, Elizabeth has 

visited classrooms and presented at conferences, making contact with educators and over 1700 students. 

Elizabeth is an educational consultant with a master’s degree in Middle Level Education and 

fifteen years of classroom experience. 

Leslie Fisher 

Director, lesliefisher.com 

Leslie’s interest in technology began while studying music at the University of 

Southern California, where she recognized the value of using computers for music 

mixing and recording. After changing her major and graduating, Leslie joined Apple 

Computer, and was one of the first Apple employees to study Internet growth and

Be a Good Network Neighbor 

MACUL is working hard to provide a robust network for conference attendees. But we need 

your help. Here’s what you can do: 

1. Connect one device at a time: While you may have multiple wireless devices, please only 

connect one at a time to the network and take a moment to disconnect when you switch 

to a different device. 

2. Don’t set up your own network: When things get slow, it is tempting to use a wifi hub to set 

up a network. Please avoid the temptation as your mini-network interferes with the larger 

network. 

3. Wait to download and stream: The network is meant for conference-related usage such 

as checking the online program or chatting on the backchannel. Please resist the urge to 

download large files or stream movies during conference hours. 

Thanks for your help! 

Be sure to get one of the special ribbons from a Tech Support person to let others know that 

you are a good network neighbor!
