John’s Jottings
Welcome to Woodstock Park from The Club Secretary
Good afternoon everyone, welcome to Woodstock Park.
Our visitors are East Grinstead Town. Welcome to them and today's match officials. I hope they
enjoy their short stay at Woodstock and have a safe journey home.
We played The Wasps only a couple of weeks ago and came away with all three points in a 2-0
win. Goals were from Steven Ita and Jack Steventon.
It was disappointment for us on Tuesday night when we lost 3-0 to Faversham Town in the
League Cup semi - final. It was a magnificent achievement for us to get that far. The result was
not entirely unexpected as injuries and players being cup tied meant Nick had to make 4 changes
from the squad that played at Tooting & Mitcham United previously, a squad that was also
depleted by the absence of Tom Carlse (injured), Andy Irvine (injured), the non appearance of
Ollie Bankole and Josh Wisson (embargoed by England schoolboys because of this weekends
England schoolboy international in Ireland.) So in all six key players were missing against Faversham.
The subs bench on Tuesday consisted of Nick Davis and four Under 21 players who
actually qualify for the Under 18's! Despite the weakened team it was a good effort against an in
form team going for a play off place. It was 2-0 at half time but just after the restart Stefan
Wright missed a penalty that could have put The Brickies right back into the game. Almost immediately
Faversham scored the third and probably decisive goal and go on to meet Kingstonian
in the final..
The match at Tooting was a really good performance all over the pitch to frustrate a really good
side - a side that outplayed us only a few weeks ago here at Woodstock in winning 3-0. A 95th
minute goal by a sub (Jordan Wells) who came on after 81 minutes was enough to beat Tooting
on their home territory this time. Jordan has now scored six goals in eight full appearances and
seven substitute appearances for the Brickies. Tooting will be somewhat aggrieved by not getting
anything out of this game but we know that feeling only to well!
The last home game here against Three Bridges. From our point of view it was a poor game and
a poor spectacle for the spectators. I cannot understand why our best performances are generally
away from home but that is how I have viewed this season so far.
Don't forget we have a very talented Under 21 team. In fact they are an Under 18 team with
some of them only 16. I watched them play recently against Burgess Hill Town and particularly
in the second half they played very well and I thought they were the better side. They were unlucky
to concede a late goal to go down by 2 goals to 1. They have two games coming up at
home soon. The first one is next Wednesday against Merstham and they play Herne Bay on
Wednesday 16th March. Entrance is free and the bar is open. Come down to support the Brickies
of the future.
Finally I must mention the Brickies fans who have been fantastic in the last two matches at Tooting
and in large numbers at Faversham. Your support is much appreciated by all of us associated
with Sittingbourne and thank you for heeding a bit of advice from me on Tuesday!
From the Manager
I write these notes after what was a disappointing performance against Faversham
on Tuesday evening in the Semi-final. My words before the game were simple give
everything you have and have no regrets after. Unfortunately we never turned up
and were very poor and I feel sorry for the 70 plus Brickies fans who were absolutely
brilliant throughout the game and made the atmosphere that of a home
game. We were down to the bare bones and I only had 10 senior players to pick
from.
On the plus side it gave opportunities to four of our youth lads and this experience
and game time that they experienced will be invaluable for their development. You
do also have to realise what an achievement we have made in making the last 4
from 72 and winning 4 previous rounds 3 of which away from home. We have 9
games remaining with 42 points and so the aim is to try and achieve 60 points and
push as far up the table as possible.
EAST GRINSTEAD TOWN — A BRIEF HISTORY
East Grinstead Town Football Club was formed on
May 8, 1890 although it was another ten years before
they played their first competitive matches as
founder members of the Mid Sussex Football
League. In those early days the club played in blue
and white with the town's coat of arms on the breast
pocket. It was some years before they adopted their
current colours of amber and black and were nicknamed
'The Wasps,' both of which survive to this
day. They won the Mid Sussex League in 1902 and
their first major honour followed seven years later
when they shared the Sussex Junior Cup with Arundel.
In 1909 they were awarded senior status which
they have held ever since apart from two seasons
when they were relegated to the intermediate third
division of the Sussex County League in 1989.
In 1912 Grinstead reached the Sussex Senior Cup
final for the only time in their history but lost 4-1 to
St Leonards Amateurs in a ferocious snowstorm.
The Wasps were original members of the Sussex
County League when it was founded in 1920, but
they struggled to make any impact and after finishing
bottom in 1927 and replaced by Horsham, they
were not re-elected.
Rather than returning to the Mid Sussex League,
they had four successful seasons in the Brighton
League before stepping up to the Southern Amateur
League. A fresh challenge reinvigorated the club
and they won the Division Three title in 1932 with 15
victories out of 18. Three years later they played on
the Test match cricket ground at Trent Bridge in
Nottingham when they defeated Nottinghamshire
Amateurs 6-0 in the old FA Amateur Cup.
Determined to regain their place in the Sussex
County League, they were re-elected back in 1937
after winning the Mid Sussex League again and finished
fifth in their first season.
In those halcyon days either side of the Second
World War, four-figure crowds were the norm at
their old ground in West Street, East Grinstead,
which they shared with the town's cricketers. The
club's record attendance is 2,006 for an FA Amateur
Cup tie against Lancing in November, 1947.
Success eluded Grinstead until 1952 when they
won the Baldwin Cup, the forerunner of the Sussex
County League Cup. That team is reckoned by
many to be the finest the club has ever produced. It
was certainly the most entertaining - 42 games that
season in league and cup produced 222 goals!
Grinstead were third in 1955, but their fortunes began
to decline along with crowd numbers after that.
They left West Street in 1959 but it wasn't until 1967
that they finally moved to their current home at East
Court after a protracted battle to get the ground,
which was prone to waterlogging, fit for football. In
the meantime they had a spell at King Georges
Field in the town centre.
The club again finished third in 1973 but that was as
good as it got for another 30 years although Grinstead
did reach their first cup final since 1952 when
they lost 4-1 to Haywards Heath in the RUR Cup in
1974 despite taking the lead. During the 1980s the
club regularly hosted Crystal Palace and Brighton in
charity fixtures watched by crowds of over 2,000
spectators.
Wasps found themselves in Division Two for the first
time in 1979 and even had two seasons in Division
Three before regaining senior status. They were
promoted back to Division One in 1993, but lasted
just two years.
Bob Smith led Wasps back to Division One in 2003
and they also won their first trophy for 52 years,
beating Three Bridges 4-0 in the final of the RUR
Cup.
Unfortunately, the club were relegated back to Division
Two on the final day of the 2004-05 season
and in October 2006 Smith, the longest-serving
manager in the club's history, was replaced by former
player Steve Norris.
In his second season Wasps romped to the Second
Division title by a massive 18 points, losing just
twice all season. Their winning run of 14 successive
league games at the start of the season meant they
became the last senior non-league team in the
country to drop points.
Since then the club has established itself in the top
flight, most recently under former Brighton striker
Simon Funnell and their progress on the field has
been matched off it.
Floodlights were installed in 1997 and a new drainage
system laid in 2003 that has transformed the
playing surface, which is now one of the best in
Sussex.
In 2008 two new stands and a pitch perimeter barrier
were erected and in 2014 with the GAC Stadium
already meeting the requirements of the Ryman
Football League after installing additional seating,
the club began work on a new dressing room and
hospitality complex, a new turnstile block and entrance
and a resurfaced car park. Part of the 2014
funding included a £50,000 grant from FA Cup
sponsors Budweiser, £100,000 from the Football
Stadia Improvement Fund, £40,000 from Mid Sussex
District Council and £35,000 from SITA Trust.
Funnell’s side finished the season in second place,
their highest ever County League position, and in
May 2014, the club were accepted into the Ryman
League for the first time in our history.
The club has four adult teams and five junior sides
ranging in age from under- 11s to under-18s which
is planned to be greatly expanded for the 2014/15
season. They were awarded the prestigious FA
Standard Chartered Development Club award in
2003 and were registered as a Community Amateur
Sports Club in 2005.
From the Chairman
A
It’s been a strange week for the club, a great backs to the wall last minute smash and grab raid
to take a fantastic three points at Tooting and Mitcham last Saturday, then the disappointment of
losing our semi final at Faversham on Tuesday night.
There must have been close to a 100 of our fantastic supporters in the 350 crowd but they out
sung the home support by a military mile. Thank you one and all, you are the best by far. Any
neutral would have thought we had won. Goodness knows what the noise level would have
been if we had of won! By contrast it really did not seem to matter that much to our hosts.
Staving off relegation was our aim and that has been achieved. Problem is with the people
brought in, our league side was getting stronger but our cup side was getting weaker. That is no
disrespect to the lads that played Tuesday but it was the most inexperienced team we have
fielded since I have been Chairman. There are some great youngsters that will make us a good
side in time, but on nights like that you need a balance and a few more experienced players
would have helped. Too many cup tied or injured.
Makes you understand why teams have tried to
cheat in previous rounds and it does devalue the
competition, but rules are rules. If by contrast that
had been a league game affecting promotion or
relegation and we had fielded that side we might
have been called into question for fielding a weakened
team! Never mind our day will come.
Shame about the penalty, Stef is a whole hearted
guy who always tries his best and he was devastated.
I was disappointed because there were enough
guys on the pitch who scored in the penalty shoot
out at Hastings that should have stepped up.
Nick and his management team have done well this
year lets hope we can keep the momentum going
and finnish as high as possible, starting with three
points today.
Up the Brickies and good luck to Josh Wisson who
hopefully played for England Schools last night
(Friday) and our U18's for reaching the County Cup
Final where they will play Dover or Folkestone.
Match Reports
By Tony Rickson
On a cold night in Sussex, they made just one
change from the team that lost at runaway league
leaders Folkestone on Saturday, the excellent Callum
Naessens coming in at right-back for Stefan
Wright.
It was my first chance to see Scott Whibley (steady
and strong) and Tom Carlse (impressive and solid),
and Steventon in a new role in front of the back
four. He’s a terrific young footballer and made
some excellent interceptions, though he did occasionally
stray out of position. What a promising
player, though, and he was thoroughly delighted to
get his goal – even though rumour has it his dad
just missed seeing it … East Grinstead are by no
means the worst team in the league and they started
with a flurry, forcing three early corners, and giving
Adam Molloy shooting practice, as he tipped
one shot over and fisted another away. All that in
the first six minutes but for the rest of the game the
Sittingbourne keeper didn’t have much to do at all.
Back came Sittingbourne with front runners Miles
Cornwell and Dan Hughes working extremely hard
and Ita – by far and away the best player on the
field – proving a real handful for the home defence.
Cornwell and Ollie Bankole both drove shots wide,
Steventon missed at the far post from an Ita corner
and it was Ita again who provided a great through
pass for Cornwell, who got round the keeper but
couldn’t prevent the ball running out of play.
No goals in the first half and a draw looked at that
time to be the likeliest outcome, but Sittingbourne
got on top in the second half and were by far the
more effective side.
East Grinstead were hopelessly caught trying to
play the ball out from the back in the first minute
after the restart. Cornwell setting up Ita who confidently
drove a left-foot shot inside the keeper’s
near post for his seventh goal for the club. Ita
should have scored again in the 63th minute when
clean through on a clever one-two but he drove his
shot against the keeper’s legs. But it was 2-0 when
Hicham Akhazzan found Ita in space from a corner
and Bankole flicked on his low drive goalwards.
The keeper saved but couldn’t hold it, and Steventon
ran the ball over the line from all of a yard out.
It was all Sittingbourne in this half and if it hadn't
been for the keeper saving Ita’s penalty late on
could have been more.
Sittingbourne: Molloy, Naessens, Carlse,
Whibley, Crimmen, Steventon, Akhazzan (Wright
70 mins), Bankole, Cornwell (Wells 87 mins),
Hughes (Algar 78mins), Ita
Ryman League Div 1 South
Sittingbourne 1 Three Bridges 2, att 125
Three Bridges are only a mid-table team who came
to Woodstock on the back of a humiliating 6-0
home defeat, but they know what they were good
at. Defending stubbornly, breaking quickly and
managing the game – they did it all successfully.
Without Ollie Bankole and Dan Hughes, Sittingbourne
brought back Josh Wisson and Jordan
Wells into the team that won very competently at
East Grinstead in midweek.
On a blustery and grey day, they started well and
took the lead as early as the fourth minute, their
earliest goal of the season.
Hicham Akhazzan sent Miles Cornwell racing into
space down the right and when Josh Wisson’s shot
from his low cross was blocked, Jordan Wells was
handily placed to score from the rebound – his first
goal since that sensational late hat-trick against
Ramsgate in the final game of last year.
Three Bridges had a free-kick just a few yards out
when Adam Molloy picked up a close-range back
pass. But did nothing with it. But they equalised
with just 10 minutes played after a break away, the
experienced Garrod sweeeping in the ball firsttime.
Ita hit one corner that went right across the goal
area with nobody getting a touch on it as Sittingbourne
gradually re-established some control
after a mid-half wobble when Three Bridges were
on top.
But the visitors scored again in the final minute of
the first half and it proved to be the winner. Again it
was a quick breakaway, catching Sittingbourne out
of shape after Callum Naessens’ pass was cut out
a long way up the field. Three Bridges counterattacked
quickly and when the ball fell kindly for
Godfrey he smashed it into the corner.
Sittingbourne lost Tom Carlse, who was making his
home debut, early in the second half, kicked out of
the game by a late challenge that went unpunished
by a lenient referee apart from a free-kick.
It was Three Bridges who made the much brighter
start to the half with a couple of great chances going
begging, but Sittingbourne gradually got back
into the game without, frankly, creating very much.
They could no longer get Cornwell and Wells running
in behind the defenders, who dropped very
deep, and the creativity to get round them was
lacking.
Sittingbourne: Molloy, Naessens (Wright 61
mins), Carlse (Richardson 55 mins), Whibley, Crimmen,
Steventon, Akhazzan, Wisson (Algar 73
mins), Cornwell, Wells Ita.
Our core business is to provide cost management services
to the construction industry. Our client base includes
subcontractors, contractors, corporates, private
businesses and public sector organisations. We adopt
industry accepted approaches to cost management/
procurement. We apply these diligently and conscientiously
to each project.
Our staff regularly undertake CPD training and university
studies in order to keep abreast of developments
in the industry. In addition to our collective experience
and expertise, Our software systems enable us to deliver
efficient services to our clients. We are also currently
looking at ways in which we can further benefit
our clients using Building Information Model [BIM].
Many of QS Consults’ clients are already involved in the construction industry with
our services complementing their own. By way of example with public sector clients
we can prepare cost studies (including market testing) to enable them to make
more informed decisions regarding proposed projects and estates strategies.
On the other hand for contractors and sub-contractor’s we provide estimating and
tendering services allowing them to focus on their core business of delivering construction
projects. Just some of our projects are shown below:
From the Programme editor
Not much room today so I’ll get straight down to some news of the local footie scene: Welling Utd are in
real danger of relegation from the Vanarama National league whilst monied Ebsfleet Utd are very well
placed in National league South to take their place. Its all change at Whitstable, not only have they got a
new chairman in Rochester builder Adam Lightowler but they have just parted company with their Manager
Ian Cox, and their club secretary has departed. They also have a new web site but not much info
on it at the moment. Rumour has it that their old programme editor Andy Short is joining Hythe Town as
programme editor. It however would take a miracle for them to avoid relegation. I also noticed that ex
Brickie Joe Nwoko is playing for Ashford Utd. Last piece of local news is that Dover's chairman Jim Parmenter
is threatening to leave if crowds don’t’ increase!
I want to thanks those of you who are buying their Amazon through the link on our web site. Its bringing
in modest returns but every penny helps. On the subject of money remember that if you can all persuade
at least 1 extra supporter to come along then we could break the 200 barrier and the extra money that
would bring in would all be used to strengthen the team!
Under 18’s News
Jack Steventon has come through to the first team and a number of others have come on from the
bench. They have also reached the Kent FA under 18’s cup final, and currently stand second in their
Ryman Div 1 South
Tooting & Mitcham Utd 0 Sittingbourne 1, att
141
In more than 20 years of watching Sittingbourne, I
don’t think I’ve ever seen a win quite like this.
Defiantly hanging on for a hard-earned point, they
launched a long clearance forward well into the fifth
and final minute of added time.
Steven Ita flicked it first time beyond the final defender
and sub Jordan Wells ran in behind,
shrugged off an attempted foul, and slid the ball into
the net past the advancing keeper.
Sittingbourne threw themselves into this game,
working hard all over the pitch, defending excellently,
and showing a lot of courage and determination.
Quite how there are 15 teams in the division better
than these two sides still remains a mystery after
this.
The whole defence was outstanding. George Crimmen
was probably the best player on the field, nononsense
Scott Whibley alongside him is proving
an excellent signing, Jack Steventon did a manful
job just in front of them and goalkeeper Adam
Molloy was his normal brilliant self as the last line of
defence.
On a chilly day in what’s surely the best stadium in
this league, Sittingbourne soon discovered they’d
have to work hard to stay in the game. Tooting, who
always play decent possession football, hit the bar
in the 30th minute and territorially dominated much
of the rest of the half only to find Molloy in outstanding
form on a pitch where he collected a first half
red card last season. To keep it goalless, he made
three top saves, one to his left, one to his right and
the other with his feet.
Sittingbourne started the second half promisingly,
showing more attacking intent, and Miles Cornwell
just failed to set up Dan Hughes after wriggling his
way clear, and Steventon blasted another shot over
the bar. Tooting had two efforts cleared off the line
in succession, claiming unsuccessfully that one of
them was actually in the goal, and had another shot
that scraped the top of the bar.
It was nervy stuff at times, with Molloy getting hurt
rescuing a situation after he’d failed to hold a shot,
and Crimmen coolly relieving the pressure by heading
over his own bar while his keeper was down.
It looked like job done by Sittingbourne, a valiant
effort to return from South London with a hardfought
goalless draw. And then they went gloriously
and unexpectedly better, nicking the most surprise
winner of the season as Wells struck with virtually
the last kick of the game to give them an impressive
seventh away win of the season.
Alan Turvey Trophy semi final
Faversham Town 3 Sittingbourne 0, att 327
It always looked likely to be a bridge too far with so
many of the squad missing, and that was how it
panned out. Steven Ita, Tom Carlse, Jordan Wells,
Josh Algar, Scott Whibley, Callum Naessens and
Andy Irvine were all missing, either injured or cup
tied whilst Hicham Akhazzan started but went off
injured after half an hour. The other absentee was
Josh Wisson who was wanted by England schoolboys.
In came Jono Richardson, Stefan Wright, and
George Batten, son of Sittingbourne legend Ernie.
With all the changes this season it was still a great
achievement for the Brickies to reach the semi finals,
the farthest they have ever been in the competition.
The previous best being in season 2009/10
when the quarter finals were reached.
The game came slowly to life with the first shot on
any goal not coming until the 19th minute when Faversham
captain and ex Brickie Ryan Cooper had a
shot that Adam Molloy in the Sittingbourne goal
easily gathered. Molloy was in action again 4
minutes later when he came rushing out of his goal
and bundled Liam King over just outside the area,
he received a yellow card for his effort but for a moment
it looked like it could have been worse.
Faversham took the lead on 25 minutes when Sittingbourne
resident Luke Harvey raced away after a
misplaced Brickie pass and fired past Molloy. Faversham
then took control from there. Just after the
goal a corner ball found its way past a melee of
players and hit a post.
The lead was doubled on 37 minutes when Liam
King scored to give the Lillywhites a 2-0 lead at the
Break.
5 minutes into the second half Sittingbourne were
thrown a lifeline when another ex Brickie, Matt
Bourne, conceded a penalty. Sittingbourne's usual
penalty taker Hicham Akhazzan had limped off after
half an hour so up stepped Stefan Wright to take
the kick, but it was poor effort easily saved by Faversham
keeper Will Godmon.
To rub salt into the wounds almost straight after
there was a Faversham break away and Charley
Robertson made sure that Faversham will meet
Kingstonian in the final by scoring Faversham's
third.
At least the amazing Sittingbourne supporters kept
on singing throughout the game (and after!) and
showed their appreciation of this much changed
Sittingbourne line up at the end.
