WITNESS EXTRAORDINARY NATURAL LANDSCAPES
In 2001 the Lake Neusiedl region was declared a UNESCO World
Heritage Site and joins another 850 cultural and natural
monuments around the world. The total area covers about
747 km 2 on the Austrian and Hungarian sides. Austria and Hungary
share this unique National Park Lake Neusiedl – Seewinkel, which
includes Seewinkel, Nature Park Lake Neusiedl, Leitha Mountains,
the internationally acknowledged RAMSAR - NATURA 2000
REGION and a biosphere reservation; together with the Rust Hill
Region and the Leitha moors they are all part of this one-of-a-kind
natural landscape.
ADMIRE THE MULTITUDE OF FLORA AND FAUNA
The National Park Lake Neusiedl – Seewinkel was founded in 1993.
It is one of the most important and diversified avian reservations
in Europe. For centuries this region was used for grazing, which
resulted in a unique and specified territory. Around 1970 a lot of
the ranches no longer profited from keeping cattle and sheep and
the land was used mainly for farming and to grow vine. A lot of
the moist and salty areas, which could not be cultivated, were left
on their own, resulting in an abundance of reeds. Around 1985,
it was realized, that valuable habitats were about to disappear,
and grazing was started again. This time there was emphasis on
protecting and preserving the natural habitats. Long term studies
accompanied the reintroduction of Hutweiden and grassy areas.
The Natural Park Lake Neusiedl – Seewinkel, where about 100 km 2
belongs to Austria and the other 200 km 2 belongs to Hungary, is
one of the most fascinating natural habitats in Europe
FROM THE LONG-LEGGED BUZZARD TO THE TUNDRA SWAN
The Lake Neusiedl region, which lies between the eastern end
of the Alps and the western end of the Hungarian lowlands,
is a unique natural habitat for Austria: The Lake Neusiedl is a
biological borderland, where one can find flora and fauna from
Alpine , Pannonian, Asian, Mediterranean and Nordic regions.
Like a mosaic, there are marshland, dry grassland, oak forests,
sand steppe, pasture land, meadows and salty areas next to
each other. The lake itself is situated on the lowest point of the

Hungarian lowlands and does not have a
runoff. It includes about an area of 320 km 2 ,
180 of it as reed belt. Lots of hiking paths
and a new infrastructure at the Nature
Park Lake Neusiedl - Seewinkel originate
in a spectacular and lasting nature event.
Most of the 300 different bird species
– from long-legged buzzard to tundra
swan - can be watched with binoculars or
spotting scope. The Information Center of
the National Park Lake Neusiedl – Seewinkel
in Illmitz is open year round and offers
information and exhibitions. There is the
possibility to book excursions at the center.
CULTURAL EVENTS IN PANNONIAN RHYTHM
Numerous cultural events attract more than half a million
enthusiastic visitors from all over the world to the Lake Neusiedl
region every year : It could be the Classic Opera Festival in
St. Margarethen, which takes place in a very romantic looking
ancient roman quarry since 1997 or the Operetta Festival in
Moerbisch, which had its 50 th anniversary in 2007. Be sure not to
miss the Haydn Festival, a yearly event at the Esterházy Castle
in Eisenstadt or the classical concert festival at Halbturn Castle
and Esterházy Castle. The regional capital Eisenstadt will be the
center of the worldwide festivities in 2009, the 200 th anniversary
of Joseph Haydn’s (1732-1809) death. But there is not only opera,
operetta and concerts in the Lake Neusiedl region, fans of rock
music will have a ‘rocking good time’ at the Nova Rock Festival
in Nickelsdorf.
CULTURAL EVENTS FOR THE OLD AND THE YOUNG
The Lake Neusiedl region does not only offer the annual festivals
in the summer, but there are many other cultural events for
grown-ups and children (page 14): There are the Castle Esterházy,
the landmark of Eisenstadt, the region’s capital and the most
important cultural monument in Burgenland, the Haydn House,
which Joseph Haydn bought in 1776 and he lived there for 12 years,
Castle Halbturn, a late baroque monument built in 1711 by Lucas
von Hildebrandt, the Village Museum Moenchhof, the Museum
of Local History in Moerbisch, the Ethnographical Museum Castle
Kittsee, the Diocesan Museum in Eisenstadt, the Provincial
Museum Burgenland in Eisenstadt, the “Infeld-House of Culture”
in Halbturn, many galleries, churches, such as the Cathedral of
Holy Martin in Eisenstadt or the Basilica in Frauenkirchen, abbeys
and historical excavations. Children highly enjoy the antics during
a performance of Fritz Fuerstlich, a noble bat, who found a home
at Castle Esterházy in Eisenstadt. There is the one of a kind Fairy
Tale Park Lake Neusiedl, that beckons for a family outing and
Papageno`s World of Opera in the romantic looking roman quarry.
FOLLOWING THE TRACKS OF JOSEPH HAYDN
Joseph Haydn (1732-1809) lived for more than 40 years as royal
composer at the Esterházy Court in Eisenstadt. Many of the
original venues -the Haydn Hall at Castle Esterházy is world
famous for its outstanding acoustics - provide the festive style
for the International Haydn Festival. This festival is, since its
conception in 1986, responsible for the continuation of the ‘Haydn
tradition’ and the center for the international Haydn recognition.

10 delightful living
delightful living
THERE IS ALWAYS SOMETHING HAPPENING
It seems it is in the blood of the people living in the Pannonian region to enjoy the moment and lay back. This is one of the reasons
that more and more visitors discover the Lake Neusiedl region. All around wellbeing is not only a distant goal, but it can be
celebrated in an outstanding manner. There are many possibilities in the Lake Neusiedl region to regain vitality in gentle, peaceful
and pleasurable ways. The bicycle tours, hiking in the National Park Lake Neusiedl-Seewinkel, sailing, surfing or swimming in the
lake, combined with the pairing of the local gourmet products and the outstanding Pannonian wine, which are served in local
“Buschenschenken“ (wine taverns), country inns or exclusive gourmet restaurants bring vitality to the mind, soul and body.
THE PANNONIAN SPRING ARRIVES EARLIER
Whereas in most parts of Austria there is still winter, the Lake Neusiedl region celebrates already the awakening of spring with
many colourful events. It is proven, that spring starts earlier here than in other parts of Austria. The Lake Neusiedl is a giant climate
regulator, which raises the average temperatures of the air and thus entices spring to make an earlier appearance.
PANNONIAN AUTUMN: A COLOURFUL BOUNTY
When nature ripens the multitude of her bounty, then autumn starts in the Lake Neusiedl region. The mild rays of the sun warm
the lake one more time and bath the landscape in warm autumn colors. Wine, culinary pleasures, the unique natural landscape
around the lake and the famous Pannonian hospitality will leave a lasting impression of the Pannonian Autumn with the visitor.

“PRAISING ST. MARTIN”: BAPTISM OF THE WINE
After the harvest of the grapes in the Lake Neusiedl region, the waiting period begins. Everybody awaits the highlight of the Pannonian
Autumn: 11 th November, the day of Saint Martin, the patron of the Burgenland. The young wine will be “baptized” and tasted. According
to an ancient tradition, wine-growers will open their cellars (Martiniloben – Praising St. Martin) and invite the public to taste their
wines.
EXPERIENCE PANNONIAN DELICACIES AT FIRST HAND
2000 hours of sunshine and 300 sunny days are not only enjoyed by the tourists in the Lake Neusiedl region, but also provide for the
optimal climatic conditions for the grapes of the regional wine-growing areas Neusiedler See (Lake Neusiedl) and Neusiedler See-
Huegelland (Lake Neusiedl – Hilly Country). In the wine-growing region Lake Neusiedl, the red varieties Zweigelt and Blaufraenkisch
prevail. Pinot blanc and Welschriesling dominate the white wine sector. The Seewinkel with its sandy soils and the numerous small
salty lakes experience a micro climate that favors the occurrence of noble rot (Botrytis cinerea) and is basis for the world’s best sweet
wines. The wine-growing area Neusiedler See-Huegelland mostly grows grapes like Welschriesling, Pinot blanc, Chardonnay, Sauvignon
Blanc, Blaufraenkisch, Zweigelt and Cabernet Sauvignon. A very professional end production lets these grapes reach a unique top
quality. Numerous national and international awards speak for the top quality of these wines. Therefore one will find in the Free City of
Rust the “Austrian Wine Academy”.
EXCLUSIVE & DOWN TO EARTH
The Pannonian “joie de vivre“ reaches its peak during the teamwork between the wine growers and chefs in local wine taverns or
exclusive gourmet restaurants. During the Pannonian Autumn, the days of Praising St. Martin or the Pannonian Spring numerous
gourmets come to the region every year to partake in the regional top products, wine and culinary delights. Therefore the Lake Neusiedl
region is every year mentioned in the gourmet guides as one of the leading culinary regions of Austria.

FRESH & DIVERSE
The supply of products in the Lake Neusiedl region is manifold: Fresh fish from the lake, reintroduced species like the Mangaliza pig
and the gray cow in the Nature Park Lake Neusiedl-Seewinkel, nationally and internationally top rated wines and bio- vegetables
from Seewinkel, which is known for its top products. There are other top-end-producers, who bring regional products to the market.
In autumn starts the gaming season, as well as the harvest of pumpkins and fresh mushrooms from the forests of the nearby Leitha
