February Festivities: National and Liberation Days
Kuwait is currently living the joy of celebrating occasions dear to the heart of every Kuwaiti, the
National and Liberation Days. This year, we are celebrating Kuwait’s 54th National Day and
24th Liberation Day.
Such celebrations are of great meaning to Kuwait and its people. The celebrations are held on the 25th
and 26th of February each year. Streets get really busy where everyone has his/her own way of celebrating.
You may see people dancing in the middle of the streets, while others are waving the National flag out of
the window. You may also see some kids spraying the cars with foams, while others are enjoying the show
of the fireworks.
4
NATIONAL DAY
What’s the story behind the National Day?
Kuwait celebrated its Independence from Britain on the 19th of June, 1962. However, it was decided to
change the day to the 25th of February to avoid the hot weather of June. Since 1963, 25th of February is
celebrated as Kuwait’s National Day.
Kuwait on the National Day celebrates with many activities and events, including a fantastic show of
fireworks, brightening up the night sky. On this important day, Kuwaitis are usually dressed in their
national dress and streets are decorated with colors of the national flag.
In the middle of the active celebrations are many places around the city where a majority of the people
prefer to go to and celebrate.
5
LIBERATION DAY
Why is it so important to Kuwait?
On August 2, 1990, Saddam Hussein, the ruler of Iraq, gave orders to attack Kuwait. Over 30 countries
from all over the world helped in liberating Kuwait, and driving the Iraqi army back to Iraq. On February
26, 1991, and after seven months of occupation, Kuwait was finally liberated. Since then, Kuwait celebrates
the 26th of February of each year as a day of liberation, joy and happiness.
The Liberation day brings the people together in unity and harmony. It marks one of the most meaningful
and joyful days for the people of Kuwait. The day is filled with public meetings and gatherings, which are
held throughout the country. A common thing that people do on this day is dancing and displaying the
national flag from the highest points all over the country.
Be Fit with Me
Parents often struggle with which type of sport or exercise, and how much, is right for their kids. However,
equally important to consider is getting them in shape with a general conditioning program to ensure
safety and better performance.
The conditioning program should include a balance of cardiovascular power (aerobic activity), flexibility,
and muscular strength, and should be adapted to fit your child’s needs.
To complete the program, be sure to work on each of the following fitness components:
Cardiovascular Training
It is vital to keep kids in shape for sports by making sure they’re doing aerobic activities like walking,
running, and swimming. Ideally, children (like adults) should be doing at least 30 minutes a day of a
moderately powerful physical activity. Those who are already more active may benefit from more energetic
exercise. The aerobic training should be active enough for them to breathe harder without making them
gasp for air or stop exercising.
Because children of various ages and stages of development differ in attention spans and physical abilities,
you should let them gradually build up to this recommendation. Younger children may need to exercise in
short, stop-and-go rounds similar to those that happen naturally in most sports activities.
14
Strength Training
• Stronger muscles help kids improve their performance and protect them from injury. To strengthen
muscles, kids need to do exercises that make the muscles contract by means of resistance. These types of
exercises include weight-training or “body-weight” exercises such as push-ups, sit-ups, pull-ups, and
tug-of-war.
• Under the supervision of a trained adult, children can participate in a strength training program
several days a week.
• Though most kids are pretty flexible, they should still stretch before and after sports or fitness activities
to prevent injury. The best time to stretch is the cool-down period, after the kids have gradually slowed
down at the end of their activity. During the cool-down they should stretch every major muscle group
- in particular, those they used most for the exercise. They should hold each
stretch for 15 to 20 seconds.
• Stretching can also be done during a warm-up period before your kids play.
The warm-up should include large movements that loosen and limber the
body, as well as light stretches that are held for about eight seconds.
Children should focus on the muscles they will use the most during the
activity.
• Many parents encourage their children to join sports teams that mean
a heavy time commitment, and some children participate in several
sports. While playing sports has many benefits, an overload can
lead to a greater risk of injuries. Making sure your kids are
prepared is one way to keep the crutches and casts away.
15
Exercise keeps children’s bodies and minds healthy. But being prepared with physical conditioning
makes it safer and more enjoyable. Remember the following tips to keep them from developing sports
injuries:
• Make sure your children have a thorough physical exam before entering a fitness program.
• Determine their appropriate levels of participation in sports and other physical activities.
• Make sure that they wear appropriate shoes, clothing, and protective gear.
• Have them drink plenty of fluids -- mainly water, avoiding drinks high in caffeine -- before, during, and
after exercise.
• Adjust their activities to suit the temperature and humidity where they will train or play (ideally, moderate
temperature with low humidity).
• Make sure they warm up and cool down.
• Instruct them to breathe properly during exercises, exhaling on exertion rather than holding their breath.
• Encourage them to gradually increase the intensity, duration, or frequency of exercise.
• Make sure they take a few days off to rest their muscles if they are sore as a result of training or play. If the
soreness does not go away or lessen over several days, seek the advice of a physician or therapist.
• Re-evaluate the amount or level at which they are participating, and consider reducing the level if they are
continually experiencing soreness and fatigue.
• Have them immediately stop exercising or playing if they feel or
appear to be dizzy, light-headed, nauseous, or in pain.
IT COULD HAPPEN
One day, overnight, the world turned violet. Just about everything
turned violet from the sky and ocean and mountains to the trees
and animals and people and from the tallest skyscrapers to the
tiniest ant. People sat around looking at one another wondering if
they were dreaming. But nobody woke up and things stayed violet,
all except for a single Blue Jay who hadn’t changed color and stayed
the brightest blue.
Being the only thing in the world that wasn’t violet, he was caught
and put in a cage.
People were shocked. Some were afraid and some were
amazed and a few thought it was funny, because along with everyone else, the President was very violet.
Whole families were violet as were teachers, movie stars, doctors, nurses, gas station attendants, the
Queen of England, the President of Mozambique, taxi-drivers, everybody. They went from place to
place in their violet cars and buses and rode violet bikes and sat on violet furniture and ate violet food.
The smartest scientists in the world gathered to figure it
out. Was something wrong with people , s eyes or was it a
trick of nature? They did studies and tests and analyzed
and evaluated and debated and wrote article after article,
but couldn , t explain it.
The color of the Blue Jay became a big issue because
he had such a little bit of blue and the world had such a
whole lot of violet. People argued about the importance
of that. Some said the Blue Jay must be a very special
bird or maybe not a bird at all because he alone had kept
his true color. Others said this was silly, that the Blue Jay ate bird seed and drank water and fluffed his
feathers and that other than his special color he was still just a bird.
20
It was exactly one year to the day after the world had
turned violet that people awoke to find the world had
turned yellow. All except the Blue Jay.
In some ways a yellow world isn’t any different than a
violet world. People simply said yellow instead of violet
when they talked about things. Only now the Blue Jay
was more important than ever because he alone had
stayed the color blue and people argued about what that
meant. They lined up for miles just to take a look at him.
For the next two years, exactly on the day the world
had turned violet and then yellow, it turned new colors:
first orange and then pink. Still the Blue Jay stayed blue,
causing ever greater disagreement - until in the fifth year
the whole world turned blue.
The first thing people asked was what about the Blue
Jay. Had he stayed blue? Yes, he was still the same color.
No longer were there two colors in the world, but just one - the color blue. And because the Blue Jay
was a color like everybody and everything else people began to lose interest. Now that he was neither
more nor less important crowds stopped coming and one day, six months into the year that the world
had turned blue, somebody let him out of his cage and he
flew off looking happy to be free.
The very next morning the world regained its rainbow of
colors as if nothing had ever happened. At first this was a
novelty but soon people forgot the world had once been
all violet. They forgot the world had once turned yellow,
then orange, then pink, and then blue. But on occasion
they wondered where the Blue Jay had gone and how he
was doing and, most of all, if he was still the color blue and
what it had all meant.
THE WIENER DOG MAGNET
Once there was a little monkey named Kiki Marie.
After cleaning her room sixteen times, she took her
allowance to the magnet store.
There were many magnets to choose from. She
picked the Wiener dog, and paid one nickel. She
loved the Wiener dog magnet very much.
She took it everywhere she would go, and showed it
all of her favorite places.
But as she got close to the river, where real wiener
dogs live, something strange started to happen. Real Wiener dogs
were sticking to her magnet! She tried to walk on, hoping they
would just fall off or something. But they didn’t.
Finally the dogs were so heavy she couldn’t even carry them
anymore. She wished she picked a different magnet.
Suddenly, she heard a loud noise! There, in the river, were two
alligators trapped in the rapids! Kiki Marie had an idea.
She gathered all her strength and hurled the wiener dogs
across the river.
Due to the magnetism, they formed a magnetic wiener
dog bridge. And, the alligators collapsed in safety.
The King of All Alligators presented Kiki Marie with a
blue ribbon for saving the day.
And she, and all of the Wiener dogs, slept very
soundly that night.
Loro Parque Tenerife
All you need to know to visit one of the best zoos in the world...
Loro Parque (Spanish for “parrot park”) is a 13.5-hectare zoo located on the outskirts of Puerto de la
Cruz on Tenerife, Spain where it houses an extensive and diverse reserve of animal and plant species. The
park was initially conceived as a paradise for parrots and has developed over the years into one of the biggest
attractions of the Canary Islands, with over 40 million visitors so far.
At Loro Parque, you and your family will have a unique experience in contact with some of the most
beautiful animal species known. This is a place where you can have fun, spend some relaxing time with
your family and learn a lot ... really a lot. The project of Loro Parque Tenrife officially began in 1972,
with a selection of parrots, created by the German businessman Mr. Wolfgang Kiessling and his father.
Initially there were about 150 parrots on show in an area covering about 13,000 m². That moment
marked the first show of parrots in Europe. After more than 40 years in existence, they have expanded
their facilities to approximately 135.000 m² and have received over 40 million visitors during this time.
At Loro Parque, you can watch the Dolphins as they perform right before your eyes, and see the Orca
whales with their top class performance. These are just two of the most popular attractions within the
Park, and then there are the Penguins who have made their home on one of the largest icebergs outside
of the polar regions!
Naturally there are plenty of other great shows and sights for the whole family to enjoy - Sea Lions,
Parrots, Pelicans, Gorillas, Chimps, Tigers, and even Sharks! You can see all these wonderful animals
when you visit the Park. It’s not to be missed and is a great day out for the whole family - young or old!
46
Penguinarium or Penguin Planet
You can see a rocky area with a large pool and a few Humboldt
penguins who usually live in Antarctica.
Nutrias (Otters)
Khali and Murphi are the two nutrias (otters) that come from
the zoo Landau, in Germany. They are in constant movement
and play in their lake with vegetation and logs suitable for their
fun and development.
Chimpanzees
The area reserved for chimpanzees is adapted so that they can jump, shelter, take a nap and eat independently,
which is not surprising, as these primates are in danger of extinction. They are the closest animals to
human species (share almost DNA 99%).
The family residing at Loro Parque is composed of a dominant male called “Churrero”, three females of
different ages – Silvi, Clara and Marina – and three young one – Ivan, Gombe and Bongo.
One of the main characteristics of Loro Parque Tenerife, and that makes it unique, is that it tries to promote
to its visitors a sense of responsibility for the protection of the animals, as well as knowledge. A kind
of education while entertaining.
The Parks latest attraction is Katandra Treetops and this Australian themed attraction takes you along the
tree tops and jungle pathways where you can discover the birds in their natural habitat. Other attractions
include the children›s playground «Kinderlandia», Gambian Market, a parrot baby station, a huge parrot
museum and many restaurants. For visitors interested in plants, there is a large orchid garden with very
rare plants.
Healthy Apple Pie bites
This tasty treat, like an apple pie sandwich, can be made as a
fun party activity. The ingredients used to make it are lower
in fat, sugar and salt than a traditional apple pie.
You Will Need
• 2 Apples
• 20 whole meal biscuits
• 10 tablespoons of natural
yoghurt
• Honey
• Ground cinnamon
Method
1. Preheat the oven to 180C.
2. Peel and core the apples, then cut into 5mm-thick slices.
3. Place the apple slices on a lined baking tray and bake for 15 minutes.
4. Allow to cool for 5 minutes.
5. Assemble the bites by layering a biscuit, a slice of apple, a spoonful of yoghurt, a drizzle of honey,
a shake of cinnamon and another biscuit on top.
Sunshine Burgers
Here is a fun recipe to teach you how to roll and shape!!
You Will Need
• 25g of cornflakes
• 225g minced beef
• A small bunch of basil leaf, ripped into
small pieces
• 1 large beaten egg
• 75g of plain flour
• 1 tablespoon of vegetable oil
• 6 mini burger buns that have
a lettuce leaf and a tomato
slice each
• Tomato ketchup to serve
Method
1. Preheat the oven to 200C.
2. Crush the cornflakes by placing them in a freezer bag, then breaking them with the rolling pin. This is
fun, but take care of your fingers and try not to crush the cornflakes too much (leave them rough
flakes). Put them in a bowl.
3. Put the minced beef into another bowl; add the basil and a sprinkle of pepper. For lean minced beef
you may need to add 1 tablespoon of beaten egg to help it stick together. Mix it well. Put some flour
on a plate and some beaten egg on another plate.
4. Take about a sixth of the minced beef mix and shape it into a small burger. Do this by squashing it
quite firmly in the palm of your hand.
5. Roll the burger in the flour. Then roll it all over in a little egg. Then roll it slightly in the crushed corn
flakes. Now place it on the oiled baking sheet and start the process again until you have used up all the
mix. Try to keep the sizes even so that the burgers cook in the same time.
6. Lightly drip oil onto the top of each burger using a pastry brush and bake in the center of the oven for
15-20 minutes until they are cooked.
7. Serve the burgers in the split buns with lettuce, tomato slices and some ketchup.
