Siliziumphotonik
Als Antwort auf stetig steigende Bandbreiteanforderungen
in der Kommunikation und auch im Bereich
Computing gibt es intensive Anstrengungen zur Entwicklung
integrierter photonischer Technologien, mit
besonderem Augenmerk auf der Zusammenführung von
Silizium-IC-Technologie und integrierter Optik, der Siliziumphotonik
(Silicon Photonics).
Siliziumphotonische
Anwendungen orientieren sich an breiten Märkten,
wie z.B. dem Access-Bereich oder an „high-end“
Märkten wie u.a. dem High-Perfomance Computing. Die
Attraktivität von Silizium für optoelektronische Anwendungen
beruht dabei auf den Eigenschaften, die das
Material gleichzeitig für integrierte Schaltungen und
passive Wellenleiter qualifizieren.
Photonik-Knowhow. Die TU Berlin erhält im Gegenzug
Zugang zur IHP-Technologie für photonische Anwendungen.
Den Rahmen für die Zusammenarbeit bildet
das Joint Lab Silicon Photonics.
Der Schwerpunkt der Arbeiten lag auf wellenlängenselektiven
Komponenten unter Verwendung von Wellenleitergittern.
Eine Technologiebibliothek für die Herstellung
von Gittern auf SOI-Wellenleitern befindet sich
in der Entwicklung. Sowohl Elektronenstrahl- als auch
DUV-Techniken finden Verwendung. Dies ist besonders
interessant als komplementärer Ansatz für Gitteruntersuchungen,
da auf der einen Seite schnelle Prototypenherstellung
möglich ist, auf der anderen Seite jedoch
großflächige Prozesse mit hoher Ausbeute gefahren
werden können. Auch eine Kombination beider Technologien
ist denkbar.
Silicon photonics
Continuously increasing bandwidth requirements in
optical communications and computing give rise to
intense development efforts in integrated photonics,
with particular interest in the convergence of silicon
IC-technology and integrated optics, silicon photonics.
the availability of photonic functionality via a
planar wafer level technology would pave the way for
new markets and applications in the photonic realm,
comparable to the transition from discrete electronics
to IC-technology. Silicon photonics applications
target large markets, such as access networks, or
high-end markets such as high-performance computing.
the particular charm of silicon for optoelectronic
applications derives from its properties that allow
for the realization of integrated circuits and passive
optical waveguides at the same time. In order to set
up a photonics technology based on IHp’s BiCMoS
toolset, a close collaboration with technische universität
Berlin (FG Hochfrequenztechnik) has been
established. IHp benefits from the photonics knowhow
available in Berlin, while Berlin gains access to
the technology of IHp for photonic research purposes.
the frame for this collaboration is the Joint lab
Silicon photonics.
It focused on wavelength selective components based
on waveguide grating structures. A library of
technologies to fabricate grating structures in SoI
waveguides is presently under development. these
technologies make use of e-beam and deep uV (DuV)
lithography. the technologies may be deployed in a
complementary manner to achieve rapid prototyping
(proof of principle) or high-yield large area fabrication.
even a combination of both technologies is possible.
