Intelligenz in mutifunktionellen Mikrosystemen.
begrenzen.
rF MeMS Integration
the main goal of this project is the integration of
RF MeMS into an existing SiGe BiCMoS process. this
leads the way to the fabrication of RF MeMS in a high
yield industrial processing line and the use of RF
MeMS switches in complex BiCMoS RFICs.
RF MeMS have seen significant global research efforts
over the last years, but their industrial uptake has
been very slow, despite their demonstrated advantages
such as low loss and especially high linearity.
A significant reason for this dilemma is that RF MeMS
have mostly been fabricated in dedicated technologies,
with inherent technology-related difficulties
such as sticking and face interfacing problems with
the remainder of the system. A major objective of this
project is to demonstrate the integration of RF MeMS
into an existing state-of-the-art SiGe BiCMoS process
of the IHp.
Due to the size of RF MeMS switches, their use only
makes sense at millimeter-wave frequencies, but there
this technology can contribute significantly to
an increased integration density and functionality.
the technological advance will allow a higher level
of intelligence in multifunctional microsystems. the
IC design approach will investigate how the fully integrated
RF MeMS switches can be applied in reconfigurable
„core ICs“, which can be used over a wide
range of the millimeter-wave spectrum for a variety
of applications. the goal is to show a viable way to
„off-the-shelf“ building blocks, which can be fabricated
in large quantity and programmed for a specific
application. this eliminates the need for applicationspecific
IC design in many cases, lowers cost through
higher market volume, reduces design cycle time and
hence removes significant obstacles which currently
limit industrial take-up.
