The density of London’s road network frequently<br />

creates situations where underpasses and<br />

bridges over roads are necessary to provide<br />

convenient and direct routes.<br />

Underpasses are a particularly challenging design<br />

context for upholding the values of Streetscape<br />

Guidance. Underpasses should be carefully<br />

considered so as to promote a greater sense<br />

of quality, especially for those routes which<br />

serve as pedestrian and cycle links alongside the<br />

carriageway.<br />

Design<br />

• Footways should preferably be provided on<br />

both sides of the underpass where there are<br />

local pedestrian links. An unobstructed width<br />

of minimum 2000mm should be provided<br />

• For roads with speed limits of 50mph or<br />

more, footways alongside underpasses are not<br />

appropriate and road restraint systems should<br />

be considered on the approach to the underpass<br />
