Toucan crossing facility<br />

Toucan crossings allow both pedestrians and<br />

cyclists to cross without segregation. These<br />

crossings are typically used in conjunction with<br />

shared use footways. Far-sided signals have a<br />

green cycle symbol alongside a green/red man.<br />

If a two-stage toucan crossing is required in<br />

exceptional circumstances its design should be<br />

carefully considered as cyclists may not stop on<br />

the refuge.<br />

Good practice<br />

• Far-sided toucan crossings are preferred. This permits the addition of countdown signals<br />

• Signal timings should be appropriate to pedestrian and cycle flows and traffic volumes<br />

• All signal schemes are required to have a design and safety check in line with the Design Standards<br />

for Signal Schemes in London<br />

• Tactile rotating cones should be fitted to all controlled crossings<br />

• Audible bleepers should be fitted to standalone signal controlled crossings
