Learning beyond <strong>the</strong><br />

Classroom<br />

This trip took place on 5th - 6th February 2016<br />

The students studied and demonstrated in-depth learning and investigations in<br />

<strong>the</strong> following areas:<br />

• How <strong>the</strong> concept of niche accounts for distribution and abundance of organisms<br />

in a habitat. Case study-<strong>the</strong> Arabuko-Sokoke Flora and fauna. They were engaged<br />

in <strong>the</strong> exploration of knowledge and research on fragile environment especially<br />

coastal ecosystem.-Case study Mangrove forest and conservation.<br />

• In line with <strong>the</strong> IMYC <strong>the</strong>me Consequences; <strong>the</strong> learners were able to assess<br />

<strong>the</strong> effects of mangrove harvesting on <strong>the</strong> ecosystem and impacts on marine life.<br />

Our students also ga<strong>the</strong>red physical evidence through tour guides and curators,<br />

witnessed firsthand and took photographs of various aspects during <strong>the</strong> two-day<br />

tour of <strong>the</strong> North Coast.<br />

• Moreover, effects of erosion and tectonic activities were evidenced at Hell’s<br />

Kitchen as one of <strong>the</strong> destinations during <strong>the</strong> trip. Assessment of <strong>the</strong> long shore<br />

drift and resultant features - erosional and depositional like beach, caves and<br />

o<strong>the</strong>r landforms were also appreciated. We did not forget <strong>the</strong> identification of <strong>the</strong><br />

Importance and relevance of historical site at Gede Ruins which forms part of<br />

<strong>the</strong> history of <strong>the</strong> coastal inhabitants. Most importantly, <strong>the</strong> students were able to<br />

practice <strong>the</strong> requisite field work skills through data collection and analysis.<br />
