Year 7 OUTDOORS:
Watamu-Malindi
Learning beyond the
Classroom
This trip took place on 5th - 6th February 2016
The students studied and demonstrated in-depth learning and investigations in
the following areas:
• How the concept of niche accounts for distribution and abundance of organisms
in a habitat. Case study-the Arabuko-Sokoke Flora and fauna. They were engaged
in the exploration of knowledge and research on fragile environment especially
coastal ecosystem.-Case study Mangrove forest and conservation.
• In line with the IMYC theme Consequences; the learners were able to assess
the effects of mangrove harvesting on the ecosystem and impacts on marine life.
Our students also gathered physical evidence through tour guides and curators,
witnessed firsthand and took photographs of various aspects during the two-day
tour of the North Coast.
• Moreover, effects of erosion and tectonic activities were evidenced at Hell’s
Kitchen as one of the destinations during the trip. Assessment of the long shore
drift and resultant features - erosional and depositional like beach, caves and
other landforms were also appreciated. We did not forget the identification of the
Importance and relevance of historical site at Gede Ruins which forms part of
the history of the coastal inhabitants. Most importantly, the students were able to
practice the requisite field work skills through data collection and analysis.
