CAPABILITIES
WE BELIEVE OUR COMPETITIVE EDGE IS
A GENUINE COMMITMENT TO QUALITY AND
FOCUS ON EMPLOYMENT.
Preparation for Employment
Our customised training activities ensure content and delivery is
appropriate and relevant to the individual participant’s needs.
Several of our clients experience language, literacy and numeracy
(LLN) disadvantages and we design contextualised learning activities
that maintain the validity of the outcome without unfairly disadvantaging
the learner.
“OUR CUSTOMISED TRAINING
ACTIVITIES ENSURE CONTENT
AND DELIVERY IS APPROPRIATE
AND RELEVANT TO THE INDIVIDUAL
PARTICIPANT’S NEEDS. “
All training activities realistically reflect the conditions of the
workplace, ensuring that the client is adequately prepared for
the challenges of this environment.
Funding assistance is actively sourced from a variety of organisations
such as JobActive network, Remote Jobs in Communities Program
providers, Australian Apprenticeships Centres as well as wage assistance
and other funding from various State and Federal Government programs.
We actively promote traineeships and apprenticeships, which have
the added advantage of encouraging our employers to place the
participant into work-based training in accordance with the Australian
Apprenticeships System.
Training Activity
Our intention is to deliver the highest quality training through a
flexible and adaptable approach that meet industry and student needs.
As such, we have identified a range of qualifications that allow us to
offer an integrated workforce development-training program that can
minimize the number of external providers a company may need to fulfill
their training requirements. Consequently, we offer a broad scope of
qualifications relating to the resource and infrastructure, civil construction,
general construction, management, WHS, business, and training and
assessment areas.
Our broad range of services provides us with the flexibility to offer a wide
range of jobseeker pre-employment training opportunities as well as
culturally appropriate employment-based training.
We work closely with other RTO’s that deliver specialist qualifications
in areas outside of our own, which may include community and health
services as well as the traditional trade areas. Importantly, we have
established connections with many reputable RTO’s and work with them
to ensure that the training they provide is also of the highest standard.
“OUR INTENTION IS TO DELIVER
THE HIGHEST QUALITY TRAINING
THROUGH A FLEXIBLE AND
ADAPTABLE APPROACH THAT MEET
INDUSTRY AND STUDENT NEEDS.”

CAPABILITIES
(CONT.)
Training Structure (New & Existing Workers)
In the first instance a training plan is negotiated with the employer taking into
account their workforce development plans (which may include organisational
and personal skill requirements) to meet future operational demands that are
linked to industry developments and/or new contract work.
We provide the option of customisation of relevant units of competency
to meet the employers specific workplace needs, both now and in the
future. On completion of these negotiations, an individual training plan is
developed, finalised and signed off by all parties.
Once the training plan has been finalised, the options for training and
assessment may include onsite or offsite training or a combination of
both. Students may also attend classroom sessions or receive one to one
case management, which is supported by learner manuals, trainer visits
and/or regular contact via email or phone. Delivery and assessment may
also include ‘hands on’ practice while on-the-job as part of the students
daily routine which minimises downtime and disruption.
Recognition of Prior Learning
We offer a Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) process to our
students undertaking full-time courses and for those people wanting
an assessment against a specific qualification or individual unit to
identify their current competence and skill level.
This procedure involves our trainers meeting with those people seeking
RPL and explaining the process to clearly define what activities or
evidence may be required to assess their competence. This could include
the provision of previous qualifications, work experience, training history,
voluntary work and third party reports, or any other evidence that is
deemed relevant.
Where appropriate and approved, the trainer/assessor may also visit
the workers site and observe them perform the tasks that are being
measured through the RPL and match these to the national standards of
the qualifications being sought.
Verification of Competency (VOC)
In 2012, a new set of Workplace Health and Safety laws were introduced,
placing greater responsibility on the employer to undertake ‘all reasonably
practicable measures to prevent the risk to health and safety occurring’.
The main difference with these new legislative changes is the greater
emphasis on the duty of care. In the unfortunate event that an accident
was to occur on site, the employer must demonstrate and prove that
they met their duty of care obligations by doing everything possible to
make sure the operator was appropriately trained and had the required
competencies to be performing that task at the time the incident occurred.
Current industry regulations require employers and ‘persons conducting
a business undertaking’ (PCBU) to ensure their workers can clearly
demonstrate their ability to perform the tasks related to their job role
when plant is used.
Verification of Competency (VOC) is an assessment method, which
may determine whether a person can safely operate a piece of
equipment for which they hold the certificate or competency or
other relevant formal qualification.
As an employer, having employees and contractors complete their VOC
allows your organisation to demonstrate that adequate and reasonable
measures have been taken to ensure the health and safety of your
workers on site.
The process for completing a VOC includes the trainer:
• asking the participant a number of safety and plant operation questions
• asking the participant to undertake a prestart check and asking
questions during the check
• assessing the participant’s level of competence while the participant
operates the piece of plant or machinery
• assessing the participants undertaking a post check
Machinery that can be assessed under the VOC system includes,
but is not limited to;
• Backhoe
• Grader
• Excavator
• Roller
• Front End Loader • Skid Steer Loader

COMMITMENT
TO SUCCESS
DRIVEN BY REAL RESULTS,
YOUR SUCCESS IS OUR SUCCESS.
Our Recent Achievements
Much of our training activity is designed around the needs of the
workplace or community and relates directly to employment opportunities
presented to jobseekers and existing workers. In both metropolitan and
remote locations the jobseeker is trained on community infrastructure
projects under the supervision of our qualified personnel. Wherever
possible, the training activity is integrated with the workforce needs of
companies operating locally.
• We are currently engaged by BHP Billiton to deliver pre-employment
programs for Aboriginal job seekers under their Aboriginal
Pathways Program.
• We are currently working in partnership with Lend Lease, York Civil,
De-Construct, Theo Agelis Constructions, Prospect Contractors,
Team Civil and Australasian Contractors, as well as a number of local
Government Councils such as Mount Gambier, Prospect, Renmark,
Clare and Ceduna in South Australia, to up skill existing workers in
civil construction.
• In Western Australia we have delivered training to Aboriginal participants
under the Regional Partnership Alliance in the Goldfields of Western
Australia, Rio Tinto in the Pilbara and Pindan Constructions in the
Kimberley’s Fitzroy Valley. Alternative training and employment programs
included work on Horizon Power initiatives and utilised communitybased
labour.
• We have delivered pre-employment training to Indigenous job seekers
in remote and regional areas including Looma, Derby, Halls Creek and
Esperance and other communities throughout the Pilbara, Kimberley’s,
Goldfields and Mid West regions.
• Again in 2014, we delivered pre-employment training to 56 Aboriginal
job seekers in Darwin for Leighton Holdings. With remarkable results,
95% of participants were offered employment opportunities following
training completion.
We have helped many jobseekers successfully complete out preemployment
training and transition into fulltime employment with
reputable companies such as Baulderstone on the Southern Expressway,
the Northern Expressway, Seaford Rail Extension and on the major railway
line infrastructure projects in the North of South Australia.

although intangible, it is very real and provides us with the ability to work
successfully with our client groups.
We have worked closely with communities, individuals, industry and
Quality Approach
The organisation applies a quality assurance approach to all its
activities. Carey Training operates in accordance with, and under the
regulation of the Australian Skills Quality Authority (ASQA) and as such
we are subject to external audits. For quality assurance purposes we
