OUR CHAPTER 2012-2013
ACHIEVEMENTS
Through the 2012/2013 year the SCI – Drayton Valley
Chapter experienced great successes and attained
huge goals in support of SCI’s mission toward hunting
conservation, education and humanitarian endeavors.
One of our most memorable occasions was the privilege
of being awarded the 2012 Chapter Top Gun Award,
Chapter of the Year, 2012 Top Membership Retention
and Growth, as well as an additional Publication Award
for our Chapter quarterly newsletter.
In the previous year our Chapter worked in partnership
with a few other SCI Canada Chapters on a Wounded
Warriors Program initiative where we contributed
$500 toward the cause to send two wounded soldiers
on an Alberta Whitetail Hunt.
In support of SCIs Lion’s Defense Fund strategy, our
Chapter was honoured to contribute $5,000 toward
this Fund at the SCI Convention in Reno.
We continue our pride and commitment toward our
major humanitarian project; our Fishing Dock for
seniors residing within care centres and individuals
with disabilities. Our local Board and Chapter
members have contributed in excess of 900 volunteer
hours toward the operation and maintenance of the
dock this year. Over the summer months we have
been very fortunate to have a variety of user groups
visit the dock, with some seniors groups travelling
from two hours away to visit our facility and enjoy the
benefits it has to offer. In total this summer we have
had over 415 individuals visit the dock!
In support of SCIFs missions on a global scale, our
Chapter was extremely pleased to be involved in the
delivery of three Blue Bags this past year. One was
sent to a children’s hospital in Haiti while two others
were sent again through our affiliation with Hearts of
Lushoto, which is a local community organization we
have partnered with for a number of years.
As part of our commitment to sustain our hunting
heritage and providing our youth the opportunity to
enjoy the great outdoors, we facilitated a youth hunter
training program in April 2013 within our community
of Drayton Valley free of charge to youth 17 years
of age and under, with 13 youth participants and (3)
volunteers from our Board of Directors.
5 |
The Drayton Valley Chapter of Safari Club International
is very proud to continue their support of the National
Archery in Schools Program (NASP). Over the past
year we provided financial support to train 18 local
teachers. 450 students participated in the program
over the last school year which is offered in seven
(7) local schools. Drayton Valley is easily on its way
to being one of the most involved and recognized
NASP communities in Alberta. This upcoming year
we will also be working with another local school in
obtaining an archery kit. In the past year our Chapter
committed $40,000 toward the NASP program. It
is our hope that this program brings a new level of
enjoyment to those students who may not have had
the chance to shoot target archery equipment, and
that our local youth’s participation in the program may
spark an enjoyment for the outdoors and all that it has
to offer! Our goal is that this outdoor educational
opportunity will impact children for years to come
and raise awareness for Safari Club International and
its educational efforts. The NASP Program is a great
addition to our educational system and we hope it
brings great enjoyment to all involved! Enclosed
please find copies of feature articles within our local
paper, and a photo collage.
We also undertook some publicity initiatives this year
that brought SCI awareness to the forefront. This
included a local billboard advertising campaign. The
objective of this billboard was to raise awareness of
SCI within the community and as a whole, to direct
individuals to the SCI website, and to promote a good
image of hunting and family in the outdoors.
Over the past year our conservation projects have
focused on the collaring of two (2) black bears to
study their numbers in our area, their range area,
and to monitor their direct link with the mortality of
moose and elk calves.
We thank all of our members and supporters for
your part in aiding us to achieve these goals. We look
forward with anticipation as to what the year ahead
with hold for the SCI – Drayton Valley Chapter.

NEW ZEALAND AT ITS FINEST
Written By: Dean Regehr
Hello there Drayton Valley SCI,
I recently returned from a great adventure in
New Zealand, donated by Bruce and Mieke
Flett, owners of Ngahere Ranch on the South
Island. Of course, this all started at the 2012
fundraiser dinner, and a little too much wine
at the live auction! I ended up being the
successful bidder, and it was a great stroke of
luck for us as we had an amazing time!! My
good friend (and wildlife sculptor) Rick Taylor,
and his wife really wanted to join my wife and
I so we were officially a party of four.
This hunt included a great tour of the South
Island, which was a lot of fun and included
train rides, glaciers, vineyards, lots of history,
more wine, Queenstown, and a bunch of other
really memorable excursions including awesome jet
boating, go carting, boating, gondola rides, hiking and
great food!
The hunting…we traveled to Fox Glacier in search
of Tahr and Chamois first. I didn’t go on this hunt
as one of my sons would really like to hunt Tahr and
Chamois so I decided I would wait and go back with
him in 2014. Rick and Carol were off in the chopper
to get dropped off up on the top of the Glacier (any
ideas of walking up there were instantly dropped
when we all saw where they were going!!). Rick
hunted hard, lost weight, got the crap scared out of
him being stuck up there in the dark, but managed to
shoot two great trophies.
We headed for the Ranch the next day. What an
amazing lodge. We stayed in a 125 year old winery/
vineyard that was just simply exquisite. An 11 on a
scale of 1-10 for sure. The hunting was AWESOME!
What a great ranch. Tons of space; it’s just like sheep
hunting in Southern Alberta and a TON of game!
We saw a bunch of great Stags, Fallow Bucks, Wild
Boars, Goats and Rams everyday. It is very tough
stalking as it’s thorny, but a great hunt! We are
all booked to go back in 2014! If anyone has any
questions and would like a reference, please email
me at dean@rivercityatm.ca with any questions. This
would be about my 40th or so international hunt,
and I will say it’s definiately in the top five as far as
game quality…Amazing Chef, Great Outfitter, Extra
Hardworking People and FUN!
Cheers and Good Hunting…
FISHING STURGEON
First of all, I want to take this opportunity to
congratulate the SCI Drayton Valley chapter for all
of their outstanding awards and success in 2012! If
there was an award that said “Your Organization
Really Kicked Ass In All Areas Of What SCI Stands
For”, Drayton Valley Chapter you would have won
it!!! So I tip my hat to all who are involved in making
Drayton Valley SCI world class, CONGRATS!
Now, on to the article….
It started once again at the SCI banquet in Drayton
Valley in 2012. A fishing trip to Harrison River near
Chilliwack, BC was on the docket for bidding and
my wife ended up being the winning bidder of the
fishing trip. We found family and friends to join us and
booked it for October 2013.
I had never fished for Sturgeon before, and having
listened to all the stories of the big prehistoric fish
and the fights that ensued after hooking up with one
of these giants, I was very excited to get a hook in the
water. Prior to the fishing adventure, I also learned
of a little tradition called the “bait ball shooter”, for
which I have to say, being a fisherman I'm up for just
about anything that has to do with a tradition that
might bring you luck when fishing.
We settled in for the night at Harrison Hot Springs
15 |
Resort after our 11 hour drive to our destination. All
the while listening to Coby and Bill tell me about how
hard of a fight these fish put on. With the arrival of
our next morning we met Chad, our guide with BC
Sport Fishing Group and headed on our way down
the Harrison river.
We fished a few hours with nothing more then a few
taps, finally as we were reaching the confluence of the
Fraser River, all was not quiet anymore and our first
fish of the trip was on. My brother Coby was the first
to reel in one of these giants, it ended up being our
biggest of the day as well. It was my first look at the
sturgeon up close and personal. We checked the fish
for a tag as they record the length and girth of all fish
caught to see how the stock is doing.
Finally my turn and wow, I mean for a fly fisherman
I can say the fishing technique for Sturgeon is pretty
straight forward, bait, bottom, wait…. fish on .... The
power of the sturgeon is intense as these fish can
really put up a fight pulling line, breaching the water,
they do it all. The strength they have is incredible;
all the talk about the fight was true. My arms were
shaking as I finally landed my first of many sturgeon
on this trip.
It was now time for the tradition of the bait ball

shooter! If you have never seen a bait ball well...... It's
made of nylon and fish eggs or roe, a little slimy (well
a lot slimy) but I had used the one that landed the
fish, so most of the slime was gone from sitting in the
river. I poured Jäger into my cup, dropped the bait in
the cup and bottoms up! The guide and my comrades
cheered and a round of high fives was given. We
fished for a few more hours and landed just under 20
fish. It seemed as though the tradition of the “bait ball
shooter” was a success, as far as luck goes.
The day was over on the river but the night was just
beginning. We joined up with our wives at the resort
as they spent the first day receiving pampering from
the staff at the resorts spa. We talked of both days
experiences, cleaned up and headed down the street
for supper. Now if you are in Harrison Hot Springs,
I can't nor can the rest of our group, say enough for
the meals we ate at Morgans on Main Street. The food
was fantastic and the service was second to none.
During the meal my brother proposed a toast to me
for being the first ever to do a Bait Ball shooter. Oh
well…revenge is sweet they say!
The next morning was a little foggy with a chance of
a headache, when we drove to meet with our guides
Chad and Mur. Today the girls fished with us. There
were the Mahan's on one boat and the Davies on
another. I couldn't wait to see the look on my wife's
face when she felt the power of one of these fish.
Well it didn't take long and the rod bent and the
battle started. Wanita was in a tough battle with a
prehistoric giant as well. There were a few choice
words for her first fish, I think she was trying to
encourage it to come in quickly but others may think
different. What a trooper as she reeled the beast in
and was relieved when it ended up in the fish cradle.
Measure, tag, release…awesome!
We landed 20 some fish this day between Wanita,
Paula, Coby and myself on the boat. Bill and Shannon
caught their share of fish as well on their boat. All of
us shared great laughs and shaking arms during our
full day of fishing. Our fishing day finished we took
some more group photos and headed back to the
shore where we tagged our group’s biggest fish it
measured around 6'1 and 220 lbs ( inside joke ).
Another thing that we had taken in during our trip
was in Chillawack. During the fall from September
to October there is a haunted house and maze
called Reapers. This was unannounced to our party
of 6 as Wanita had arranged this outing. It was very
frightening as the others in our group can attest to.
I've never seen the look of fear, nor has Wanita ever
felt someone else's fear come crashing down upon
her, so much as we did on that evening.
This trip was fantastic. If in Harrison Hot Springs I
would highly recommend BC Sport Fishing Group
whom have a shop right in the Resort for booking
all your fishing needs. As well give Morgans a try, you
won't be disappointed. Finally if there in the fall take
in Reapers, it's a scream!
Keep your hook wet
GREAT MEMORIES
SCI-Canada also looks forward to working with all parties and Members of Parliament on matters of
concern to Canadian hunters and conservationists.
As a long-time advocate for the elimination of the Long Gun Registry, SCI-Canada is pleased that this
initiative will now be moving ahead. The Registry has unfairly stigmatized legitimate gun owners; hunters,
farmers, sport shooters, outfitters and others, disingenuously targeting these law-abiding and compliant
citizens in a false effort to reduce crime.
“SCI-Canada is pleased that the new government will be in a position to deliver on its commitment
to scrap the wasteful Long Gun Registry,” said Sven-Erik Jansson, Canada Committee Chair. “We
encourage the government to focus its resources on
the elimination of violent crime by enforcing the other
existing laws governing the use and storage of firearms,
by strengthening border controls and by targeting the
real criminals.”
SCI also applauds the Prime Minister’s commitment to
establish a National Fish and Wildlife Advisory Panel to
offer recommendations to the government with respect
to fish and wildlife resource management. While
these matters lie mostly within provincial jurisdiction,
Canadian conservation groups will be in a position
to address these important issues at the federal level,
especially when it comes to the health of migratory bird
and fisheries resources across Canada.
