PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE
Hello Everyone,
I hope you are all getting the opportunity to enjoy the great outdoors
this summer. All is going well for the SCI Drayton Valley Chapter with
efforts focusing on numerous initiatives.
On June 7th, in partnership with the Brazeau BowBenders, we helped
host a one-day Archery Fun Shoot for local area school children.
This event provided the children with the opportunity to enjoy
some target archery, while also being treated to a few prizes
and certificates of participation. Read more about this great
one day event further on in this newsletter!
Over the past year we have been working closely with
Cabelas Edmonton to organize a trip for inner city children
to come out and enjoy a day at the Fishing Dock. The fruits
of our labour will be coming to fruition on June 21st as we
will be hosting this great event; we anticipate having 20
children participate in this great outdoor day! Watch
for a recap of this event in our September newsletter
issue!
Preparations are in full swing for our 6th Annual
“Call of The Wild” Fundraising Banquet being held on
September 20th. An overview of the auction items we
have solidified thus far are captured within this issue. Please take
time to read through all the great outdoor adventures and merchandise
that will be up for the taking! I hope to see there...our success lies with our members and supporters
so please come out and support our cause.
Have a Great Summer,
“Deep In The Deadfall”
Moose Bronze
Hand Sculpted Bronze by Artist Rick Taylor
Rick Taylor is one of the most renowned wildlife artists on the
contemporary sculpture scene. His art is appreciated and collected
by museums and individuals worldwide. His pieces cover species
and subjects from all corners of the globe. Rick Taylor is talented,
hard working and passionate about the work he does and about
preserving the wild places and species he loves so much. As the
recipient of several wildlife art awards, his works can be seen in
settings as diverse as outdoor parks from Radium Hot Springs, BC,
to Ulan Bator, Mongolia, international embassy lobbies from the US
to Japan, Hermosillo Mexico and private and public museums and
individual collections. We are pleased to feature his masterpiece
entitled, “Deep in the Deadfall”! Big bull moose are usually found
in burnt over timbered areas where new growth provides luxurious
forage. Their long legs facilitate
traveling through the deadfall like
no other big game. This sculpture
captures that scene. ”Deep in the
Deadfall” is cast bronze mounted on
walnut. It stands 19`` tall. The edition
is limited to 48.
“Wake Up Call”
Laurel Barbieri Artists Proof Giclee
SCI - Drayton Valley Chapter is once again pleased to present to our guests a non-typical
method of artistry by Laurel Barbieri. Her work captures nature and animals in a very raw
form. It connects the art viewer with the history of the animal dating back to the first record
of them carved into the walls of caves. To simulate this effect and history Laurel created her
own method and form of painting called relief sculpture. This layering of material and paint
create a life for the painting that simulates the walls of ancient caves. We are pleased to
present you with her beautiful creation entitled, “Wake Up Call”.
YOUTH FUN SHOOT
June 7th turned out to be an amazing day...over 80 children from our
local schools, NASP instructors and parents congregated at the Brazeau
BowBenders Archery Range for a fun filled day of youth archery shooting.
This event was made possible through the collective efforts of the Brazeau
BowBenders and SCI Drayton Valley Chapter.
Throughout the day all of the children had the opportunity to participate in
an open field target shoot and then head out onto the 3D course. For many
of these children it was the first time they ever ran a 3D course! There were
plenty of smiles to be seen on faces throughout the day!
The SCI Drayton Valley Chapter sponsored the beef on a bun lunch which
was hosted by Servus Credit Union staff. Gift bags that the Chapter had
assembled were also distributed to each participating child.
At the conclusion of the day the children had their score cards tabulated,
after which time they were presented with a certificate of participation
highlighting their bronze, silver or gold level score.
This was a great family event and the SCI Drayton
Valley Chapter was most proud to be a part of it. We
thank the Brazeau BowBenders for their partnership
and making their range available for this youth event.
We look forward to doing this again next year!
SCI CANADA SUPPORTS PRIME MINISTER'S
NATIONAL CONSERVATION PLAN
On May 15, 2014 Prime Minister Stephen Harper announced a nationwide conservation plan to
invest $250 million for wildlife management and improved hunting and fishing opportunities throughout
Canada. Safari Club International Canada (SCI-Canada) Jason St. Michael serves on the government’s
Hunter and Angler Advisory Panel to strategically advise on the best opportunities for conservation,
management, and hunting opportunities.
“Hunting is not only a way of life for many citizens, it is our heritage,” said SCI President Craig Kauffman.
“As conservationists, we are so appreciative and excited to work with Prime Minister Stephen Harper.
“By supporting habitat protection, preservation and restoration, we believe the National Conservation
plan will help to support all wildlife and the associated activities to the benefit of all Canadians.”
The National Conservation Plan… “will provide a more coordinated approach to conservation
efforts across the country with an emphasis on enabling Canadians to conserve and restore lands and
waters in and around their communities, and making it easier for citizens living in cities to connect with
nature. The NCP will include significant additional investments over five years to secure ecologically
sensitive lands, support voluntary conservation and restoration actions, and strengthen marine and
coastal conservation…”
“With expertise on wildlife conservation across North America and globally, Safari Club looks forward
to assisting Prime Minister Harper implement the National Conservation Strategy over the next five
years,” concluded Kauffman.
