PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE
Dear SCI Drayton Valley Chapter Members,
I hope you all enjoyed the great outdoors this summer! We are in full swing preparing for our 6th
Annual, sold out, Fundraising Banquet! We once again have a wide variety of worldwide destinations
and a great selection of guns and merchandise for you to bid on and buy raffle tickets on. This
summer has been busy with us supporting some
great projects. One of the highlights was the Crystal
Kids Youth Center visit to our fishing dock. 20 inner
city children, who never fished before, spent a great
day at the fishing dock. It was a fantastic experience
for them and the volunteers who were there…more
about this further on in the newsletter!
CWD in Alberta is growing and SCI Alberta is now
talking about the support we can give to this horable
disease that is affecting our deer in Southern Alberta.
Our Alberta team will be working on a support plan
to help stop the spread of CWD which is at 2% of
our deer herd in Alberta.
I wish you all a good fall hunting season and I look
forward to seeing you at the 6th Annual Call of the
Wild Fundraising Banquet!
Good Hunting,
CRYSTAL KIDS YOUTH CENTRE VISIT THE DOCK
On June 21st, in conjunction with Cabelas Edmonton, Drayton Valley SCI
was very pleased and privileged to host 20 youth from the Crystal Kids
Youth Centre situated in Edmonton.
It was a very nice Saturday afternoon. The kids from the centre, many of
whom had never fished before, were truly excited to be enjoying the great
outdoors. There were many smiles on their faces and excitement in the air
as practically all of the children spent the afternoon catching rainbow trout
in the SCI Pond. For some it was their first time to see a frog hiding under
rock, digging for worm bait, or just simply enjoying the
peace and quiet that the outdoors provides.
The Chapter hosted a BBQ lunch for the children and
staff of the Crystal Kids Youth Centre, and also arranged
the busing for them to and from the dock. Cabelas
also treated the children by providing each child with a
fishing rod. All of these efforts were done by the SCI
Drayton Valley Chapter and Cabelas Edmonton hoping
that the childrens’ visit to the fishing pond would lead
them to an appreciation of and desire to be in the
outdoors more often.
This was a remarkable day with wonderful memories
made knowing that the efforts of a small few were
making a tremendous impact in the lives of our youth.
We look forward to a continued partnership with
Edmonton Cabelas in hosting another group of inner
city children at a future date.
“Deep In The Deadfall”
Moose Bronze
Hand Sculpted Bronze by Artist Rick Taylor
Rick Taylor is one of the most renowned wildlife artists on the
contemporary sculpture scene. His art is appreciated and collected
by museums and individuals worldwide. His pieces cover species
and subjects from all corners of the globe. Rick Taylor is talented,
hard working and passionate about the work he does and about
preserving the wild places and species he loves so much. As the
recipient of several wildlife art awards, his works can be seen in
settings as diverse as outdoor parks from Radium Hot Springs, BC,
to Ulan Bator, Mongolia, international embassy lobbies from the US
to Japan, Hermosillo Mexico and private and public museums and
individual collections. We are pleased to feature his masterpiece
entitled, “Deep in the Deadfall”! Big bull moose are usually found
in burnt over timbered areas where new growth provides luxurious
forage. Their long legs facilitate
traveling through the deadfall like
no other big game. This sculpture
captures that scene. ”Deep in the
Deadfall” is cast bronze mounted on
walnut. It stands 19`` tall. The edition
is limited to 48.
“Wake Up Call”
Laurel Barbieri Artists Proof Giclee
SCI - Drayton Valley Chapter is once again pleased to present to our guests a non-typical
method of artistry by Laurel Barbieri. Her work captures nature and animals in a very raw
form. It connects the art viewer with the history of the animal dating back to the first record
of them carved into the walls of caves. To simulate this effect and history Laurel created her
own method and form of painting called relief sculpture. This layering of material and paint
create a life for the painting that simulates the walls of ancient caves. We are pleased to
present you with her beautiful creation entitled, “Wake Up Call”.
Teak 3 Piece Patio Set
Be the lucky owner of this beautiful 3-Piece Teak Patio Set! Teak
is valuable both for its elegance and its durability. Beyond its
beauty, it also possesses some natural properties that other
woods don't have. Teak has always been a prized material and
is found in Southeast Asian nations like Thailand, Burma and
Malaysia. Since the best wood furniture made from teak comes
from mature trees, it can take around 80 years before a teak tree
planted today is harvested for wood. You'll find an abundance
of natural oils and rubber locked right into the tight grain of
the wood. Because of this, teak has greater naturally weatherresistant
properties than just about any other type of wood.
The oils also protect the wood from dry rot, which is a common
problem in older wooden furniture. What's more, the oils and
rubber protect the heart of the wood from invaders like fungi
and parasites that can destroy other woods. All of this makes
teak a perfect material for outdoor furniture!
Mitch Strasia Knife
5th knife in series for the Drayton Valley Chapter of SCI
Alabama Damascus steel is used for this full tang custom made
knife. Custom file work along the top of tang and extends close
to the tip. The handle is constructed from Serpentine stone and
the bolsters are made from corral. A lanyard made from leather
and handmade beads (same material used in this knife) helps
highlight the beauty of the natural materials selected for this
knife.
The Custom made for knife display stand is a slab of maple burl
wood in the natural state. A piece of Damascus is used to hold
the knife and a glass plaque has the Drayton Valley Logo with 5th
CUBAN BLUE BAG DELIVERY A SUCCESS
Dianne MacGregor, Colleen Soetaert and friends
embarked on a memorable trip to Cuba in April 2014
where they gladly delivered an SCI Drayton Valley Chapter
Humanitarian Blue Bag to a local school. The following
is a written excerpt from Colleen Soetaert’s travel
diary which she transcribed, describing the experience
both herself and her travel partners experienced while
delivering this Blue Bag…
"On April 1st we packed up all the items into the Blug Bag
which consisted of school supplies, clothing and toys for
young children which the SCI Drayton Valley Chapter had
acquired. We met with our contact and went to his house
to sort out the stuff for the school. We had a lovely visit
with him and his family and saw a typical Cuban house. In
his yard he has chickens, a pig, bananas, lemons and other
fruits. His mother and father in law, brother in law, aunt,
wife, and grandmother in-law, and two children all live in
the house. He feels they are very lucky as they have a
fridge, and some other appliances. The average Cuban
makes 30 pesos or dollars a month. Those who work
in hotels are better off as they get tips. A fridge costs
about $750 dollars so it takes many months to own a
fridge. They have rationed food so that no one starves,
but it is not enough for the month so they buy the rest
at an expensive place. We dropped the school supplies
at a school; we met the director (which is the principal)
and some children and teachers. We were not allowed to
take pictures. Four children met us in their uniforms. The
administration of the school was overwhelmed with the
items being gifted to them. Although it was a challenge
for our contact to arrange; it all worked out very well.
On a personal note.....
Our contact shares much of what he gets with others
less fortunate in his own community. We could tell he
is well respected and our driver indicated to us, that this
man was well liked and appreciated. Our contact felt bad
that we had issues at the airport, but indicated that they
are a proud country and “the powers that be” would not
appreciate being looked upon as a country in need. Our
contact`s family was overwhelmed with the generosity
for the school and for all the little children. I was sent
pictures of the children but was asked not to share them
publicly. Despite the subterfuge of our little excursion, I
know our contact would willingly do it again, but would
suggest bringing the items in a regular suitcase amidst
ones own clothing and no candy as a dog will sniff that
out.
Below are parts of 2 different emails that he has sent me,
you will see by his comments how very grateful he is."
Hi there Colleen
I hope you and all the group are fine. I apologize for the delay
to write back to you, I have no justification. As promised I am
sending some pictures of the children I help in my personal
program that I call "Put A Smile on a Child" Thank you very
much for your GREAT CONTRIBUTION!!! I took advantage
that my house (my in-laws's) is the seat of a Government
program we call "Educate your child" where children over two
and under 5 who are not attending nursery school go there
twice a week and a teacher teaches them, food habits, how
to dress by themselves, the colors, to tell a short story, to sing
a song, the geometric shapes, etc. Then this day we made a
party for the children and I took advantage to deliver them
clothes from the ones you brought.
These pictures are only meant for you, not to publish in any
means of communication of any kind.
I will send a few more and some that I took before I met you.
Love to all GOOD PEOPLE.
_____________________________________________
Hi there Colleen,
It is very nice to hear from you. We are fine.
I told you, we people who work here in Cayo Coco are blessed
to have the job we have and we get a lot, so for me it is a duty
to share with those who have not the same possibilities and
are in need. People like your friends and you are the people
that this world needs.
Love to all
