REUTERS/ANDY CLARK 112 HIGHLY CITED RESEARCH DIRECTORY
CONCLUSION As these listings have demonstrated, the world of the Highly Cited Researcher, as measured according to the number of top-cited papers, stands—for now, at least—as a chiefly American domain. Half of the 3,100-plus authors specify their primary affiliations at US-based institutions. The most-represented institutions weigh similarly toward the US, with the four institutions that claim the highest number of featured authors all situated within that country’s borders. This state of affairs, however, is certain to change. China, for one, hovers just outside the top three nations in terms of producing Highly Cited Researchers, and its growing presence and ever-increasing impact on the world scientific stage will surely take it higher by this measure—and, no doubt, by many other measures in the years to come, as Thomson Reuters will continue to track.
