We enjoyed listening to them recounting their fascinating
memories of life in both Greenbooth and Norden village.
Next month we plan to feature some old photos of the
village and will include some of their memoires.
Heritage Green to developers. You will know that we have
supported this group for many months and will continue
to do so in order to try and preserve this piece of precious
local land.
As we look forward to summer, this month we have
features from both Norden and Cutgate Bowling Clubs
where there’s plenty going on. If interested, there are
details of how to join as they are always keen to attract
new members. As the Friends of Heritage Green celebrate
their first anniversary, Mark Hope updates us on their
great efforts to persuade Rochdale Council not to sell
This month Andy Kelly writes about the forthcoming
musical ‘A Slice of Saturday Night’ which will be
performed at the Curtain Theatre in April. There will be
familiar 60’s tunes accompanied by a live four piece beat
combo and will showcase many of the best youth
performers in the borough.
Until next month…….
YOUR LOCAL POLICE UPDATE
CRIME PREVENTION TIPS
Throughout the cold months, please take care when
deicing your car. If you are driving anywhere early in
the morning and your car is covered with frost, don't
leave the engine running while you are not with it, even
if it is for a couple of seconds. Not only could you not be
insured if your car is stolen, if you leave it on a road,
running and unattended you could be prosecuted for
the offence of "quitting".
We continue to tackle burglaries in your area, research into
Rochdale offences shows the below advice will help reduce the
chance of you becoming a victim of burglary.
Offenders are mainly entering houses through ground floor rear
windows / doors - some of these have been windows left open,
as the cold weather is on its way, open window insecurities will
decrease but please if you are out or in another room close
your windows & doors.
Items from the garden are being used to aid the offenders, so
far we have - Wheelie bins, garden rakes, garden chairs that
have been used - if you have a shed please use & lock it
keeping these items out of sign & mind of would be thieves.
Some homes have been successful in disrupting offenders by
having a working house alarm that is set while the occupants
are out or in bed - each crime reported over the period
researched shows where a house alarm has been
set off the offenders haven't managed to gain
access & have left with nothing.
Please use this advice to reduce the chances
of you becoming a victim of crime.
This advice has been tailored to the
particular type of criminals operating in
the Rochdale area.
We are working hard to tackle crime and
antisocial behaviour in this area and
information from the
community is vital.
BEAT THE BURGLAR
- Outside - your first line of defence. Walls, gates and fences -
High fences are hard to climb, but they give a burglar cover
once he's over. So keep them low. The best have a trellis on
top, making them difficult to climb. And make sure to lock any
gates to prevent access to the side or rear of your property.
Hedges and plants - Prickly bushes and hedges around a
garden can act as a deterrent to a burglar.
Lighting and driveways - Get an outdoor light with a sensor
that comes on when someone's around and don't
underestimate the deterrent of a gravel drive. It makes quite a
noise when walked on and can deter burglars.
DISTRACTION & BOGUS BURGLARIES
We have seen a spike in distraction burglaries and Bogus
Officials mainly targeting the vulnerable and elderly
community. If you have family members that live on their own
or neighbours then please can you be vigilant and pass on
some crime prevention, we are currently visiting our Nursing
homes and sheltered accommodations handing out crime
prevention advice.
If you're not sure who is at your door, don't open it. Check the
identity of the caller by calling the company they are claiming
to be from i.e. gas, electricity, water and police. Use the
telephone numbers listed in your local directory or provided
independently by your service provider - Do not use any
telephone numbers provided by the caller - they may be bogus.
The 'Waterboard' no longer exists, it is an obsolete phrase
used only by bogus callers.
In most burglaries, the criminals broke into the house or
flat through the door, either by forcing the lock or kicking it
in. So make sure your doors are strong and secure. Consider
fitting a bar for extra strength; a locksmith can advise you on
how best to do it.
54

Glass panels on doors are particularly vulnerable. If you have
one on your door you could replace it with laminated glass,
which is stronger. You can also buy a film in a DIY store that
...you can stick over the glass to make it harder to break.
Home security and DIY shops sell inexpensive, key-operated
locks to fit most kinds of windows. Fit window locks with keys
to all downstairs windows and those upstairs that are easy to
reach.
An update from Jane Howard,
Conservative Candidate
(Bamford Ward)
When Kate cornered me in the hairdressers and asked
me to write something about my work with the
Conservative Team for Streetwise, I was more than
happy to oblige.
It’s been a busy six months since I was formerly adopted as Local Election
candidate. I’ve been out meeting as many of you as possible on the doorstep,
or at the local Bamford and Brimrod forums and lively Bamford Chapel and
Derrick Walker Court coffee mornings.
One of the first issues reported to me
in autumn was many of you struggled to walk down
overgrown ginnels. For elderly residents, these rights of way
are often a lifeline to the shops or bus. I’m pleased to say that
I’ve now had three cleared – Dixon Fold to Bamford Way
bridleway, Bamford Way to Winchester Close and Kenyon
Fold to Highlands Road. Together with Councillor Pat
Sullivan, we’ve also arranged for cracked flags to be replaced
on the well-worn path from Caithness Road to Bury Road –
a popular route to School. We’re also continually pressing
for roads and pavements to Pat Sullivan, Ian Duckworth, Jane Howard, Jane Gartside
be added to the Highways Improvement Programme, as well as
provide additional litter bins.
I worked with residents on Belgium Street and Plover Close over a
planning application to expand the wine bar in the Precinct. This
was refused, but could go to appeal, so we are keeping a watchful eye
on sound levels which impact on families living nearby.
It was lovely in December to share in so many Christmas events
with the Conservative team. I was privileged on one day to listen to
the wonderful St.Michael’s School choir sing in the packed hall for
our Church fair, to tuck into delicious cakes with friends from
Bamford Chapel and spend an evening listening to Cantare at
Brimrod Methodist Church. We are so blessed to have so many
willing volunteers who work tirelessly to deliver such vibrant events.
I enjoyed remembering my alto lines raising money carol-singing for
Churches Together in North West Rochdale and marshalled the last
of the hard-working Friends of Springfield Park car boot sales.
Cleared Ginell Bamford Way to Winchester Close
With winter came poor weather so I took time to check grit bins were stocked, as well as join a
residents meeting in The Grapes to discuss flooding issues. Councillor Duckworth has got several
drains cleared and we have invested ward funds to find out, once and for all, where blockages lie. I
was pleased to be able to support local spokeswoman Sue Rothwell at Township where your
Councillors pressed the issue with senior officers and Township Councillors.
Now spring is here and everything is a little greener – not the verges opposite the Premier Store
though which Councillor Gartside and I have asked to be sorted – damaged over the years by heavy
parking. Say hello if you see me walking Snoopy, or jogging slowly up Roch Valley Way and I hope
you all have a very Happy Easter.

FROM CABBAGES TO KINGS
During The last war cabbages were grown on a small plot of land at the back of The Brown Cow Pub in
Norden. There have not been any ‘cabbages’ on that land since. As it has been the home to many of
Rochdale’s greatest crown green bowlers.
jack Taylor; Charlie Tattersall and Peter Craig are some of those who brought
glory to Norden Bowling Club, but there have been many others, and some
not so greats, who all played a part in maintaining Norden’s position as one
of the leading clubs in the North West.
The club now boast 2 teams in the Central Lancashire Men’s League, two
teams in the Rochdale Ladies League, two teams in the Rochdale Veterans
League, one team in the Oldham Veterans League, one team in the
Rochdale Ladies over 50’s League and a team in the Rochdale Thursday
League.
Surprisingly Norden do not have any weekend teams, but the
green is far from idle, as it is host to many competitions
including the Thwaites, A C Ventilation and Your Choice
knockouts.
The former cabbage patch has become the bastion of good
bowling, and the clubhouse has been home to many a trophy.
So what is the secret of all the success?
The green is known to be one of the trickiest in the North West,
and this is down to the hard work of the Green Keepers Maurice
Lacey; Ken Cobby & Steve Beaumont, who do a superb job.
One of our long-time members Mr jimmy Lord used to boast – “During the
last war the site was an allotment and had swings on it. We decided to
revert the site back into a bowling green, which it had been before the
war, and took it on ourselves to do all the work.
The turf actually came from Tweedale and Smalleys club which had
closed down. We transported it to Norden in sections, and started the
jigsaw of putting it back together carefully, until we got fed up and just
threw it down!”
The team had played at the Horse and Farrier: The home-coming
sparked an amazing run of success.
Although this was originally set up as a Bowling Club, in 1982 the ‘Club house & bar’ was officially opened,
and now has a flourishing social side to run alongside the bowling. Along with bowling nearly every evening, the
members can also enjoy games of bingo; quiz nights; artist nights and Saturday Free and Easy, whilst sampling the
delights of a few drinks of Thwaites brew!
As a full bowling member you can access the green at any time, matches and weather permitting, or social members can
pay a green fee each time they fancy a bowl as well as entering the various internal ‘fun days’ that are organised
throughout the year.
The social side of the club is vital to maintain a steady income to maintain the green and surroundings - why not pop in
and see us.
HERITAGE GREEN –
A FIELD FOR ALL SEASONS?
The Friends of Heritage Green will celebrate
its first anniversary on 28th February so has
been fighting for over a year to persuade
Rochdale Council not to sell Heritage Green to
developers. The group is also continuing to
attempt to register the field at Caldershaw
Road/Cut Lane (Heritage Green) as a Village
Green.
If any proof was needed of both the unsuitability of the field
for development and its value as a community asset, the
recent extreme flooding and the snow storm told the Council
all they need to know.
Back in the early 1990’s, Cut Lane was extended with 22
houses being built making up a new leg of the Lane on both
sides of what is now the gravel “cut through” that links
Shearing Avenue (near the bridge that straddles the cut) on to
Fisherfield. This path is now well-used as a short cut and
extensively by dog walkers.
As can be seen in the photograph that shows Number 1
Shearing Avenue to the right, this “Lane” was turned in to
what looks like a river by the floods. It has proven to be the
lesser of 2 evils that 20 of these houses were knocked down in
the late 1990’s, due to subsidence and some flooding, as if
there had still been residents there on Boxing Day, obviously
their houses would have been under water and they would
have had a very miserable Christmas.
The field itself, which is almost opposite across Shearing
Avenue, fared slightly better but was covered in water and the
cut swelled significantly and burst its banks spilling over on to
the field. It can be seen from the pictures that it would be an
act of sheer madness to build on this land and have
unsuspecting people buy houses and plan their future lives on
this new mini estate. Surely a lesson must have been learnt
from the previous catastrophic building episode and the misery
endured by the residents from the demolished Cut Lane
extension?
The snow was a different matter and we saw young toddlers
sledging down the gentle slopes, mass snow ball fights and
family teams building giant snowmen with imaginative
designs including one with sticks for arms and sporting a pair
of warm winter gloves! Much fun was had by all and the
merits of this small field to youngsters and their parents was
perfectly demonstrated by this winter scene.
The current position at the time of writing this article, as
regards the future of Heritage Green, is that any decision as to
its fate is still on hold pending the outcome of the application
by the Friends of Heritage Green (submitted on 12th October
2015) to register the field as a Village Green. If the field is
registered as a Village Green, this will prevent the proposed
sale of the land and provide long term protection of Heritage
Green for use for recreation and leisure purposes.
It is anticipated that Rochdale Council will ask another Council
to decide whether Heritage Green should be registered as a
Village Green as Rochdale Council is uncomfortable about
deciding upon the future of its own field. Hopefully things will
start moving when the other Council becomes involved which
is expected to be the middle of February.
The Friends of Heritage Green currently numbers in excess of
260 local residents and has grown dramatically as word has
spread throughout the local community of the possibility of
losing a much cherished recreational space. The group is
itching to get past the wrangling and campaigning stage and
the legal work involved with the Village Green application and
wants to move on to more fun activities to enhance the
environment of the field and people’s enjoyment of this valued
green space.
The Friends of Heritage Green’s Annual General Meeting will
be held on Thursday 25th February at 7 p.m. at St. Vincent de
Paul’s Hall and anyone interested in supporting the cause and
learning what has been going on throughout the year and
what is planned for the future is welcome. Elections of new
committee members will also be held at this time.
The campaign is far from over and participation and support
from anyone in any way would be welcomed and greatly
appreciated. If you are interested in joining the Friends of
Heritage Green (for free) and receiving information relating to
the campaign, all you have to do is provide your name and
contact details. Please contact Mark Hope by email on
15TH DEC. 2015 CONCERT REVIEW
CHRISTMAS ROUND THE WORLD
The feedback from an audience member summed up the evening for audience and choir alike.
“What an amazing concert” and “It just keeps getting better”. The ‘international carols’ approach was great. The choir was excellent
as usual, and Juan is just the right guy. His enthusiasm, energy, leadership and personality, Spanish accent and humour add magic
to the concerts! The Christmas Round the World programme assembled by Juan (Director of Music) was applauded as “seasonal
happy fun, with a slightly ‘cheeky’ musical element to it.” – possibly referring to a carol about San Pedro with holes in his trousers.
Sung in Spanish, Italian, French, English and Nigerian 13 beautiful new carols had been added to the choir’s repertoire since 10th
Nov.
So what is next? On Tuesday, 1st March 2016 the concert marks the 400th anniversaries of Shakespeare and
Cervantes (writer of Don Quixote). Composers include Vaughan Williams, Shearing, Dowland, Finzi and Hallfter Bury
United Reformed Church in Parsons Lane is a very comfortable and welcoming venue. Tickets (£9, students £4.50)
can be obtained via www.burychoral.org, bcstickets@hotmail.co.uk, Bury Information Centre (based in the Lancashire
Fusiliers Museum) or on the door.
A Hidden Gem
Did you know there was a Crown Green Bowling Club at Cutgate?
The Club came into being circa 1931 and is situated on a private road at the top of
Passmonds Grove. A gate giving access to the green is situated behind the shops at
Cutgate Precinct. Members have the option of purchasing a key.
The playing season is weather dependant from April to October and provides health
and social activities for members of the surrounding communities along with
gardening and keeping the green and pavilions up to
scratch (odd jobbers and amateur gardeners more
than welcome), providing outdoor pleasure as well as
the bowling.
We currently have 49 members, but more are needed
and everyone gets a game. We do not belong to a
competitive league but provide our own in house
competitions throughout the season .If you feel you
would like to give it a try, bowls will be made
available to new members on loan, but most
members provide their own. The green
has two pavilions providing tea coffee
and biscuits along with the odd cake!
Plus toilet with wash hand basin.
Along with the bowling we enjoy a good
social aspect i.e. meals out, quizzes,
indoor games afternoons and coffee
mornings during the winter.
A few of our members are keen amateur
gardeners and the green looks magnificent
during the bowling season. 2014 was the
second year we entered the ‘Borough in
Bloom ‘competition. We gained a level 4
certificate out of a possible 5. In 2016 we
hope to achieve another Award with the
continued help of our bowlers. We
therefore need more members to boost our
little club and to help with its continued
success.
Heywood Model Railway
Our monthly Open Days which commenced in
August of last year proved very popular. We
were supported by the local Tesco at Summit
with supplies for our cafe. A number of new members
were signed up who were surprised by our facilities are now
valued members of the Group. The Open days are suspended
until after the Annual Show but will start up again in April. A
number of members visited the East Lancs Railway for the
appearance of the Flying Scotsman and a much smaller version
of the same loco can be seen at our clubrooms. Members of
the public can visit any Monday evening or during the day on
Wednesdays. Anyone wishing to bring their own models of any
locos are welcome to bring them along and run them with advice
on the hobby freely given. The recent floods in the area caused
us some problems with our floor being flooded and our carpets,
such as they were, were ruined and any replacements would be
gratefully received. None of our layouts or stock was affected.
Our landlord seems to have hopefully resolved our roof leaks to
some extent. All details of our club can be found on our website
What's Not On!
Due to matters beyond our control our Annual Model Railway Show due to be held on
19th/20th March at Rochdale Town Hall has had to be cancelled due to a double booking on
that weekend. We hope to organise this years show at the same venue in September, details
will follow when this has been confirmed. All details of the Club and what's on in the future
can be found on our website www.hmrg.co.uk.
A Slice of Saturday Night
A big taste of the 1960s comes to Rochdale
Some of the best young musical talent in the borough will be onstage this April at the Curtain
Theatre this April. The smash hit musical “A Slice of Saturday Night” tells the story of a single
evening in 1964 in the basement “Club a Go-Go” nightclub. It is accompanied by a live four
piece beat combo not dissimilar to The Fab Four and the fashions and haircuts match the beats
and rhythms.
Musical director Paul Nicholls is making his debut at the Curtain Theatre said, “A Slice of Saturday Night is one of my all-time
favourite shows. What the writers have done is take the styles, riffs, solos and harmonies
of dozens of favourite sixties tunes, and reworked them into a jukebox full of familiar
seeming songs and routines. Every song in the show, sounds like you’ve heard it before,
but you haven’t.”
“The choice of show is no accident either.” added director Andy Kelly. “The production
will showcase some of the best youth performers in the town, most of whom are making
their Curtain Theatre debut. Most of the cast are studying performance or musical theatre
at colleges across the North West, and are looking to go into acting professionally.
We are very fortunate to get them now for this two week run.”
This is not the first time Andy has tackled this material either. ”Twenty years ago, I
played the part of Eddie in the show. And I was ten years too old then! The youngsters
in the cast are all supposed to be around 17, and the show tackles the issues around
relationships, growing up, love and separation- all in a comic way though”
“A Slice of Saturday Night” by the Heather Brothers (with Kind Permission from Samuel French Limited) runs from Monday 11th
April-Saturday 23rd April 2016 at the Curtain Theatre Rochdale.
The Curtain Theatre manages its audience through an invite system. You are invited to come and
see a performance by being on the invitation list, to which you receive the chance to see all of the
five productions that year. (plus some guest companies who use the theatre.) To be added to the
list you simply need to submit your full name and address to :
Roast Onion Soup with Roquefort Crostini
A fabulous rustic soup - the flavour of roast
onion is literally one of my favourites, and in
this recipe it certain shines - especially if you
add the roquefort cheese. A marriage made in
heaven!
Roast Onion Soup with Roquefort Crostini
Serves 4
3 Onions – Skin on
4 Tablespoons Olive Oil
2 Cloves Garlic
300ml Vegetable Stock
300ml Milk
Few Sprigs Fresh Thyme & Rosemary
1 Small Celeriac – Peeled & Diced
For the Croutes –
8 Slices Baguette
Bread
2 Tablespoons Olive
Oil
1 Clove Garlic
30g Roquefort
Cheese
Method
1) Cut the onions in half and drizzle with 2 tablespoons of oil,
roast in a hot oven 180oc for 40 minutes until golden in colour
and slightly charred.
2) Cool slightly, then remove the skins. Place the remaining 2
tablespoons of oil in a casserole dish and sauté the onions for
roughly 10 minutes until broken down.
3) Add the garlic, vegetables stock, milk, thyme and rosemary
and bring to the boil. Add the celeriac and simmer for 10-15
minutes until cooked through.
4) Blend to a puree, pass through a sieve and season to taste.
5) For the croutes, blend the olive oil and garlic and drizzle
over the baguette bread, roast in a hot oven 180oc for 6
minutes until golden and crisp.
Smear some Roquefort over
each one and serve alongside
the soup.
