THE BATTLE FOR FIRST PLACE
FINAL REGULAR SEASON BETWEEN THE TWO EASTERN CONFERENCE LEADING TEAMS
The top two team in the Eastern Conference do
battle this afternoon in a game that will be followed
closely around the province. Both the Barrie
Colts and Kingston Frontenacs made moves
to improve their teams this season–Michael Dal
Colle, Stephen Desrocher, Dylan Sadowy, Anthony
Stefano, Cameron Lizotte, Kiegan Goetz are all
names that were moved to these two teams during
the season–and tonight’s game is the last time
these two will face each other during the regular
season. In their 3 matchups so far this season,
Barrie has 2 wins and Kingston just 1, the last
matchup on Saturday, January 23 in Barrie where
the Frontenacs won 6-5 in the shootout.
The Colts are the other team on fire in the
Eastern Conference. With 33 wins, 16 regulation
losses, 0 overtime losses, and 2 shootout losses,
good for 68 points, the Colts sit only 2 points back
of the Frontenacs. With both teams having played
51 games and each having 33 wins, the difference
in points comes down to the extra points
Kingston has earned from overtime and shootout
losses. The Colts are an impressive 9 wins, and 1
shootout loss in their past 10 games.
The Frontenacs, still the hottest team in the
East, are in the middle of a weekend that will set
the stage for the post-season. After 51 games this
season, the Frontenacs have 33 wins, 14 regulation
losses, 2 overtime losses, and 2 shootout
losses, good for 70 points, a 2 point lead on Barrie
for top spot in the Eastern Conference. In the East
Division, the Frontenacs have wide 12 point lead
over the Ottawa 67’s. In their past 10 games, the
Frontenacs have 7 wins, 2 regulation losses, and
1 shootout loss.
SUNDAY GAME TIME NOTE: Next Sunday’s matchup
vs. Niagara IceDogs, originally scheduled
for a 2:00 p.m. puckdrop has been moved up
to a 12:30 p.m. puckdrop to accommodate the
Sportsnet broadcast schedule. Doors to Rogers
K-Rock Centre will open at 11:30 a.m. KF

Hometown boy; it’s a term we’re all
familiar with. Every week during the
hockey season, Kingstonians hunker
down to watch Coach’s Corner on Hockey
Night in Canada with a rink full of pride as
one of their own, Donald “Grapes” Cherry
rhymes off names like Muller, Gilmour,
McClement and Hall as “good Kingston
boys.” We’ve also heard Grapes bemoan the
lack of local talent on NHL teams like the
Toronto Maple Leafs.
The idea that an athlete raised in a
particular city would have the opportunity to
stay and play for his hometown team is less
and less common in these days of signing
bonuses and super agents. Fortunately for
Kingston as an OHL city, residents don’t
have to worry about salary caps and free
agents. Most of the time, if young players
are drafted or traded here, they play here.
This year, thanks to General Manager
Doug Gilmour’s continuing commitment to
local talent, the 2015/2016 edition of the
Kingston Frontenacs boasts two bona-fide,
dyed-in-the-Limestone-City-wool, hometown
boys–Ryan Verbeek and Chad Duchesne
Separated by just a year, the 19-yearold
Verbeek and the 20-year-old Duchesne
didn’t play minor hockey together but they
did have similar upbringings and both felt
the draw of the Black and Gold. “Growing
up I remember going to the old Memorial
Centre and watching the Fronts,” said
Verbeek. “My favourite player was Anthony
Stewart. He was my role model growing up
and playing with the Frontenacs was my
ultimate dream.”
Duchesne, whose father Denis was
associated with the Kingston Voyageurs
from the time Chad was very small recalls
being immersed in junior hockey from the
very beginning.
“I grew up around that level of hockey,”
he said. “I was a kid running around
the [Voyageurs] room so I saw how the
players worked and trained. I saw how they
conducted themselves on and off the ice,
how they treated their bodies, even what
they ate.” In addition, Duchesne’s family
billeted former Frontenac Mike Farrell.
“Obviously as a young hockey player, I
looked up to Mike,” said Duchesne. “It was
pretty cool hanging with one the Frontenacs
every day.”
These early experiences played a key role
in the desire of both players to contribute
and compete as members of the Frontenacs
but their experiences varied dramatically as
they reached the age where the often elusive
OHL dream skated closer to reality.
Duchesne was drafted in the 13th round
in 2011 by the Mississauga Steelheads and
admits even he wasn’t sure about playing in
the “O”. “I was never really expected to play
in the OHL,” he said. “So I started out with
the Voyageurs but I never doubted myself.”
That confidence in his own ability would
serve him well as he worked to get noticed
and kept himself ready for the opportunity
to jump up to the next level if needed.

Duchesne showed improvement posting a
solid plus/minus rating of +7 and tying for the
team lead for points by a defenseman. With
Northeastern University in Boston showing
interest, Duchesne’s OHL rights were traded
from Mississauga to his hometown Kingston
Frontenacs in August of 2014. After a heart
to heart with his parents, he decided to forgo
his NCAA eligibility, in return for a chance to
live at home and see how he measured up

as a rookie and made solid contributions

it up in the corners, much like his uncle
Pat Verbeek who fulfilled a similar role in
the NHL and earned himself the moniker
“Little Ball of Hate” with the Devils, Whalers,
Rangers, Red Wings and Stars.
Just prior to arriving at training camp in
2013, the young Verbeek suffered an injury
that turned out to be a bulging disc in his
back. He missed 11 games and his season
debut was delayed until late October. By
December of 2013, Verbeek was unhappy
with his situation and with his playing time.
His agent asked for a trade. Four days later,

General Manager Doug Gilmour snapped
up Verbeek and he was shipped home
to Kingston. The speedy left winger made
his Rogers K-Rock Centre debut on
December 6th, 2013. “It was definitely
nerve wracking when I stepped on the
ice against Barrie,” said Verbeek. “My
first shift I was going like a bat out of hell–
running all over the place. Obviously I had
a lot of friends and family in the crowd so
I was trying to give it my best. After that
first shift I shook off the nerves.”
Duchesne echoes his teammate’s
experience under the lights of his
hometown rink during his inaugural
game. “Oh yeah, I was shaking out there,”
he said. “I remember Paul [coach Paul
McFarland] laughing about it because I
ended up playing a ton - the most I think
I’ve ever played. I was gassed at the end
of the game and I remember the coach
telling me that he was glad I had settled
down after that first shift or I never would
have lasted the whole game.”
In addition to playing in their hometown
for the only major sports franchise in the
city, in front of friends, family, classmates
and acquaintances, these two boys also
have to deal with a very unique situation.
Night after night, they’re playing for one of
Kingston’s most celebrated native sons–
Hockey Hall of Famer Doug Gilmour. “It’s
kinda different to have Doug Gilmour
in management because you obviously
have lots of friends and family asking you
about him,” said Duchesne. “To us–he’s
our GM first and we have to perform for
him. So we look at him like our boss but
every once in a while you can’t help but
be a little star struck because you can be
having a conversation with him and then

you suddenly realize, you’re talking to a
Hall of Famer.”
Verbeek agreed with Duchesne and
pointed out the added bonus of having
a Stanley Cup winning legend as a boss.
“Doug’s been through everything we’ve
been through times 100 and he gives us
a lot of advice,” said Verbeek. “During
practices he has spent time with me
showing me how to calm down and slow
the game down. He showed me where he
scored most of his goals from. Those little
tips around the net have helped me out
a lot.”
As the two look forward to the
remainder of the season, they are united
in the goal to bring some playoff success
to a franchise that has had more than its
share of heartbreak. “I feel the same as
the fans feel and I want the same thing
that the fans want,” said Duchesne. “I
was in the stands watching the Frontenacs
growing up and I was cheering them on.
I am definitely putting some pressure on
myself to help us make some noise in the
playoffs for the fans. We’ve got some of
the best fans in the OHL and it would be
nice if we could give them a show and
why not in my last year?”
Duchesne clearly accepts his role
as one of three overage players on the
team and as he looks over at the younger
Verbeek, it’s obvious Duchesne’s words
carry the weight of leadership.
With the team that we have, why can’t
we be the ones to break the curse,” he
asked to an empty arena. “I think that’d
be pretty cool.”
Cool indeed, and cooler still; to do it
as hometown boys. KF

As a member of the Soo Greyhounds, John Goodwin lead the league in scoring in the
1980-81 season and in turn won the Eddie Powers Memorial Trophy and the William
Hanley Trophy as the most sportsmanlike player. After his OHL career, Goodwin
played five full seasons in the American Hockey League . From 1997 to 2000 he was
Head Coach of the Oshawa Generals. He was Assistant Coach with the North Bay
Batallion before joining the Kingston Frontenacs for the 2014-15 season.
DOUG GILMOUR
ROLE: GENERAL MANAGER
HOMETOWN: KINGSTON, ONTARIO
Doug Gilmour is a hockey icon, especially in Ontario and his hometown of
Kingston. Gilmour played in 1,474 career NHL games in Calgary, Toronto, New
Jersey, Chicago, Buffalo and Montreal, scoring 450 goals, 964 assists for 1,414
career points and 1 Stanley Cup Championship. He was inducted into the
Hockey Hall of Fame in 2011. Gilmour coached the Frontenacs for two and a half
seasons, before assuming the role of General Manager for the 2011-12 season.
RYAN BENNETT
ROLE: ATHLETIC THERAPIST
HOMETOWN: BELLEVILLE, ONTARIO
Ryan Bennett spent eigth season as Athletic Therapist with the Belleville
Bulls prior to joining the Frontenacs for the 2015-16 season. He is a graduate
of Brock University and Sheridan College and has formerly worked with the
Toronto Roadrunners, Hamilton Bulldogs, and Erie Otters. He also represented
Canada in the 2010 World U18 Hockey Championships. He lives in Kingston
with his wife Sarah and daughter Shelby.
PAUL MCFARLAND
ROLE: HEAD COACH
HOMETOWN: BOWMANVILLE, ONTARIO
Paul McFarland joined the Frontenacs for the 2014-15 season after two
seasons as Assistant Coach with the Oshawa Generals. He spent four seasons
as a player in the OHL, beginning with the Kitchener Rangers in 2002-2003,
and winning an OHL Championship and Memorial Cup in 2003. He finished
his OHL playing career as Team Captain for the Windsor Spitfires during the
2004-2005 season.
JASON SUPRYKA
ROLE: ASSISTANT COACH
HOMETOWN: BELLEVILLE, ONTARIO
Jason Supryka brings a wealth of experience in at the OHL level, having served as
Assistant Coach with the Belleville Bulls for eight seasons, and as Head Coach of
the Trenton Jr. A Hockey Club for two seasons. Jason is a graduate of Rochester
Institute of Technology, where he attended on a hockey scholarship. He is a native
of Belleville, Ontario and was drafted by the Guelph Platers in the 6th round of the
OHL Priority Selection in 1987.

Darren Keily enters his 20th season in the OHL. Prior to his seven seasons with

Templeton in Barrie and Sudbury, before moving on to a role as Assistant Coach
and Assistant GM in Peterborough, where he spent five years and won an OHL
Championship in 2005-06.

Chris Cook joins the Kingston Frontenacs after having spent 12 seasons as
an Equipment Manager with the Ottawa Senators. He has also worked as
Assistant Equipment Manager with the Carleton University Ravens Football

Paul McFarland has had a lot to be
pleased with in his second season
as Head Coach of the Kingston
Frontenacs. Heading into Saturday’s
game against the North Bay Battalion,
the Frontenacs season record stood at
an impressive 33 wins, 14 regulation
losses, 2 overtime losses, and 2 shootout
losses.

GameDay: A big win against the
Windsor Spitfires on Friday night set
the tone for a big weekend of hockey
in Kingston with three home games in
four days. How did you feel you fared
against Windsor?
paul mcfarland: We did a good
job of not giving them a whole lot. We
knew they were to come out and push
hard in the third. Their defence does a
good job of getting in the play. I thought
our forwards were good keeping (the
rushing defencemen) in front of them.
GameDay: The Frontenacs, who
held a wide 54-21 advantage in faceoffs
won, did not lose a faceoff draw
over the last three minutes when several
draws took place in the Kingston
end.
paul mcfarland: Warren Foegele
and Juho Lammikko did an unbelievable
job there especially in the third period
in our defensive zone where it matters
most.
GameDay: Last Friday night in the
5-4 win over Oshawa, the Generals made
a big push in the third period, scoring 3
goals bringing the game within 1. The
Generals and Frontenacs are not strangers
to each other, so what do you think
changed for Oshawa between the first
and third period?
paul mcfarland: We didn’t give
up a whole lot of chances in that third
period, but the ones we did give up
ended up in the back of the net. Those
things are going to happen throughout
the season. I liked how our guys kept
their composure and found a way to win
a hockey game. It was a good effort at
home in front of a great crowd that had a
great atmosphere.
GameDay: Last Saturday, the Frontenacs
were in Hamilton where they
opened the scoring with a first period
goal from Michael Dal Colle, then it was
Hamilton who owned the second period
with 3 unanswered goals. The third period,
saw Kingston rally and ultimately take
a 4-3 overtime victory. What sparked for
the Frontenacs in that third period?
paul mcfarland: We got back to
playing the way we need to play. When
we soft chip pucks, get on the forecheck,
and protect pucks off the cycle
we’re pretty hard to play against. I felt
as the game went on we started to wear
the Bulldogs down a bit and generated
a lot of scoring chances. Our powerplay
got us going with that second goal of the
game, and we felt from there that we
were going to win the hockey game. A big
credit to our guys. It’s not easy, it’s a lot
of travel for one day, to go into Hamilton
the day of the game, and finding a way
to win the hockey game is a huge credit
to the character of our group this year.
They’re a resilient group and have found
ways to come back before and hopefully
they can continue to do that. KF

Battling night after night side-by-side
with the same group of players,
working towards a common goal
and overcoming obstacles; these are
the bricks that form the foundation of a
team.
Ask any hockey player what they
remember most about their time on the
ice or off and you’re likely to hear the
same refrain over and over, “It was my
teammates.” When asked to think back
on his three seasons as a member of the
Kingston Canadians, Wayne Erskine is
singing from the very same songbook. “I
loved the hockey, I loved the competition
and I have great memories of many
team and personal accomplishments,”
recalled Erskine. “But the thing that
I remember most and the thing that I
miss the most about those days, is the
friendships and the camaraderie.”
So, this summer, Erskine and 30 or
more of his former teammates from the
1984-1987 Kingston Canadians will be
gathering in the Limestone City to look
back, share some stories and rekindle
those bonds.
The idea for the reunion was batted
around initially when the Frontenacs
hosted the OHL All Star game in 2010.
Part of the festivities included a game
between Kingston alumni and former
NHLers.
“We tried to do something right after
that game–it was so much fun,” said
Erskine. “But because of schedules and
such, we just couldn’t make it happen.
For whatever reason–everybody is much
more available now so it’s looking really
good for this summer.”
It’s been 30 years since many of
these players spent any time together
and the goal of Wayne Erskine and his
co-organizer Chris Clifford is to create a
weekend which will not just renew old
friendships but also give the fans and
community members a chance to see
the players they once cheered for from
the friendly confines of the “M Centre.”
“We had a pretty good team in those
days,” said Erskine. “Good coaching,
goaltending, lots of speed and scoring
and we were pretty tough when we
needed to be.”
Most long-time fans will remember
names like Jeff Chychrun, Scott Pearson,
Herb Raglan, Scott Metcalfe and the late
Bryan Fogarty but those teams also had
their share of locally grown talent. Ted
Linesman, Jeff Cornelius and goaltender
Chris Clifford carried the flag for their
hometown. In fact it was Clifford who
arguably drew more attention than any
other player when, on January 7th, 1987
he became the first goaltender in the
long and storied history of the Ontario
Hockey League to score a goal. “That
sure got a lot of media and it shone the

spotlight on us for sure,” said Erskine.
“But Chris would be the first to tell you
that we deserved the spotlight because
we had a solid team.”
A quick check of the 30-year-old stats
bears those claims out. The 1985/1986
team won the first round of the playoffs
against Oshawa but lost in what was then
a round-robin playoff format between
Kingston, Peterborough and Belleville.
The next year, the OHL returned to the
more traditional series of quarter finals,
semi-finals and finals. Kingston defeated
the Belleville Bulls in the first round but
lost to the Oshawa Generals. That loss
was the culmination of Erskine’s final
year. A few of his teammates like Raglan
and Chychrun would go on to successful
NHL careers. Although he wasn’t
playing in the OHL any more, Erskine
decided to stick around Kingston for a
while and was heartbroken to see the
trials and tribulations that would dog the
team in 1988 including a league-record
losing streak and changes in ownership,
franchise name and sadly, a downward
spiral for the team in general. “It was
disappointing based on what we’d
accomplished and on how good the
younger core group coming in looked,”
he said. “The issues with ownership
certainly trickled down to the players
and obviously they struggled to stay
focused.”
However, the dark days of the
Kingston Raiders did not diminish
Erskine’s love for his adopted city or for
his OHL alma mater. He’s still an avid fan
of the team and gets down to Kingston
from his home in Ottawa whenever his
job with Canadian Blood Services allows
for it.
The excitement is palpable in his
voice as he talks about finalizing plans
for the reunion. More than 30 players
have committed to return this summer
including former St. Louis Blues right
winger Herb Raglan and Flyers tough
guy Jeff Chychrun. Things will kick off
with a golf day for the players followed
by a Saturday afternoon that will involve
reconnecting with the fans and then
a more formal sit down dinner on
Saturday evening. Former players who
