Lee Balan, Eclectic Artist 

Visiting Lee Balan’s home is an experience 

like going to an intimnate museum displaying 

art from the 60’s to the present. 

Lee has been creating throughout his life. 

His work involves assemblages, paintings, 

digital art, and sculpture.It is difficult to 

identify Lee with any specific theme or 

medium. His work involves political commentary 

and satire, architectural design, 

fantasy, and homoerotic subjects. He has 

also worked in the mental health field and 

directly in the LGBT organization of Long 

Beach. He is a writer and self-publisher 

and currently puts out a list of art related 

events and activities that are available in 

the Coachella Valley area weekly. He has 

over 360 individuals and organizations who 

receive his email update 

Lee’s assemblages or constructions, utilize 

a variety of found and created items 

from electrical circuits to face masks. The 

subjects of these creations are usually 

statements of a political nature. The work 

shown in the photograph below is titled 

“The Man Who Suddenly Explodes”. This 

is a statement on the frustration of political 

promises not carried out. Found and created 

items from electrical circuits, lights and 

face masks are a few of the components of 

this thought provoking work. This is only 

one of the many assemblages found in the 

Lee Balan home museum/art gallery. There 

are also a variety of two and three dimensional 

works throughout his residence. 

His work with photoshop, digital art creations 

many involve homoerotic montaging 

of titilating subjects. An example of one of 

these works titled “Cool Man” is displayed 

below. 

In fitting with Modernism Week in Palm 

Springs, some of Lee’s more recent works 

with photo montaging incorporate architectural 

modernism. These creations are 

mounted on aluminum plates providing 

a three dimensional effect with a personal 

touch of architectural design arrangement. 

Lee Balan’s work has been exhibited in the 

Woodman-Shimko Gallery on North Palm 

Canyon as well as in other public places. 

He was also part of the “Phantasmagoria 

show at College of The Desert. Lee is an example 

of the wealth of creative individuals 

we are fortunate to have living and creating 

in this community.

LGBT Heroes George Washington Carver 

George Washington Carver was born into 

slavery in southwestern Missouri during the 

Civil War. A sickly child, Carver threw himself 

into education and was admitted to Iowa’s 

Simpson College as the only African-American 

student, eventually joining the faculty 

after graduating. He would then head the 

agriculture department at Tuskegee University, 

where he devised agricultural innovations, 

including new uses for peanuts and sweet 

potatoes, His work paved the way for modern 

advances in biofuels . Gay rumors followed 

Carver at Tuskegee, which were not dispelled 

when he and his research assistant, Austin 

Wingate Curtis, Jr., began living together.

JERSEY’S JOURNAL by Jersey Shore 

If you read my column regularly, you would 

know I went on a rant for a while. People 

these days are spineless and mindless, and if 

i could knock a little sense into at least one 

person, then I accomplished something. 

Unfortunately, certain people are and will 

always be clueless and never know how to be 

a respectful human being. So, with that said, 

it’s your loss. I’m moving on with my life to 

a much more positive place with or without 

you. I can’t heal stupid, so enjoy your stupidity. 

With that said, I like being me because I’m 

just nice. I don’t lie, steal, and disrespect 

people. I will defend and stick up for myself. I 

know the kind of person I am and the universe 

is mighty aware as it treats me fantastic. 

I reap the rewards of being good. Karma is 

my lover. It fills me up with joy. It feels good. 

And I don’t have to make it breakfast in the 

morning. 

People amaze me with what they believe, 

even though they heard it from one source, 

they have no proof, the source itself is a crazy 

mental patient, but they believe it. Why is 

that? Are people that easily strayed? Yes, they 

are. In the long run all the destruction they 

allowed themselves to be part of will crumble 

down the karma cliff and I still will be bouncing 

around on my stage doing what I do with 

my legions of fans. 

I know because I am genuinely a good 

person, that when you are falling down that 

cliff, I’ll be sitting at home with Mr. Smokey 

enjoying my Simpsons on television knowing 

that I did the right thing. I will never doubt 

that I made an impact as a good person. If 

that statement makes you scoff then you need 

to re-adjust your negative ways and you have 

issues. Enjoy being miserable. I’ll enjoy the 

good life, with my good friends, and my good 

job, and my self respect. life is great!
