Dear Friends of Yoga,
Yoga is one of the important traditions of health and spirituality in the world. It teaches regular
and consistent practice of asana, pranayama, mantra, meditation, service, devotion and self
knowledge. Yoga can improve many aspects of human personality and promotes a balanced
lifestyle for the senses, the emotions and the mind. This equilibrium is relevant to everyone and
thus to humanity at large.
Swami Sivananda and Swami Vishnudevananda developed a practical teaching system to share
this knowledge with people from all traditions and all walks of life.
The crisis we have in civilisation today is not simply an ecological and political one, it is a crisis
in consciousness. Yoga can help us to act with compassion and awareness, to bring greater
unity and harmony to ourselves and to humanity.
We look forward to welcoming you soon and wish you joy and inspiration in your yoga practice.
Om Shanti,
The five Points of Yoga
Learn yoga according to 5 simple principles – a synthesis
of the classical yoga teachings of Swami Vishnudevananda:
1
“Health is wealth.
Peace of mind is happiness.
Yoga shows the way.”
Swami Vishnudevananda
Proper Exercise (Asanas)
acts as a lubrication for the joints and muscles and other parts of the
body by increasing circulation and flexibility. The asanas
not only produce physical benefits, but are also mental exercises in
concentration and meditation, promoting optimum good health.
2
Proper Breathing (Pranayama)
connects the body to the solar plexus, where tremendous
potential energy is stored. Through specific breathing techniques
this energy is released for physical and mental rejuvenation.
3
Proper Relaxation (Savasan)
is a vital part of keeping the body and mind healthy.
Yoga teaches three levels of relaxation – physical, mental and spiritual.
4
Proper Diet (Vegetarian)
is eating with awareness. A yogi takes food which has the most
positive effect on the body and mind and the least negative effect on
the environment.
5
Positive Thinking and Meditation
(Vedanta and Dhyana)
relieve stress and replenish energy. Meditation is well known to improve
concentration and bring peace of mind and spiritual strength.
Meditation is beneficial for everyone, especially those with a hectic,
stressful life.

Yoga – a Way to Peace
In October 1957 Swami Vishnudevananda arrived in California. He had been sent by his Master,
Swami Sivananda (1887-1963), to spread the message of Yoga.
In 1969 Swami Vishnudevananda developed the first Yoga Teachers’ Training course in the West,
as part of a universal peace mission: the more people experience inner peace, the more this will
influence their actions.
Today thousands of people practice the yoga exercises
which Swami Vishnudevananda first taught in the
West in 1957.
There are more than 60 Sivananda Centres and
Ashrams worldwide, all peaceful oases of intense
Yoga practice, open to people from all walks of life.
All the activities of the Sivananda Yoga Vedanta
Centre are based on the principle of “selfless service”.
There are many possibilities to help at the Yoga
Centre. Get inspired to give some of your time to
others, and share the energy of the Yoga practice with
like-minded people.
of yoga will be explained. 30 minutes of silent
Posture, Flexibility and Anatomy – How Yoga Works
With Julia Descroizilles (Padma), physiotherapist
Saturday 6 February
The human body is extremely intelligent. Practising yoga helps the body to maintain its complex balance,
which boosts the capacity for self-healing. Asanas promote health by increasing the range of motion in the
joints, keeping the body mobile. At most joints, muscles are arranged in opposite pairs: movement takes place
when one muscle contracts and shortens while the other relaxes and lengthens. Asanas focus on
strengthening and stretching the key muscles. This will help to gradually improve any faulty alignment,
particularly in the lower and upper back.
How to Overcome Anger
With Swami Jyotirmayananda
Saturday 5 March
Body Awareness in the Asanas
With Kailas
February 12 – 14
Asanas work on many body systems simultaneously, creating suppleness in the spine and joints and toning
the muscles, glands and internal organs. Though at first it will be the physical experience of the postures that
affects you most strongly, as you progress you will grow more and more aware of the flow of prana, the vital
energy, and the importance of correct breathing – pranayama. Gaining a better understanding of how some
of the benefits of asanas and pranayama complement each other can bring you one step closer to under -
standing the Sanskrit word yoga which translates as union.
The workshop will look into the physical and mental benefits of each pose and will give invaluable tips
on what not to do.
highly practical methods for the control of anger.
“Irritation, resentment, indignation, rage, fury, wrath are all varieties of anger, according to the degree
of intensity. Control anger through patience, enquiry, self-restrained love and meditation. This is divine, this
is wise and glorious.” Swami Sivananda
Prana and the Astral Body
With Swami Jyotirmayananda
Saturday, May 14
The astral body is the subtle energy body which is the counterpart of the physical body. Prana, or vital energy,
circulates through the body in a dense network of astral energy channels, or nadis. These not only permeate
every part of the body, but also create an extensive energy field, or aura, around it. All yoga practices have
a direct effect on improving the flow of prana, vital energy, and lead to increased vitality.
aware of our true self, which is bliss and peace. It gives a wonderful message of hope and encouragement and
inspires us to rise beyond the habitual states of depression, excitement and fear and find the centre within where
we are not shaken by the changes that challenge us in our lives.
mental wellbeing. Free of charge, flowers and fruits are
auspicious offerings when attending a spiritual festival.
and pranayama
Wednesdays 8 – 9.30pm
Part II – theoretical/philosophical: Fight stress and fear
and find serenity
Yoga works on the nervous system which is activated when stress and fear or anxiety are experienced.
Yoga helps to keep the nervous system in balance so that you feel better able to deal with the unavoidable
stresses that are part of daily life. The course consists of two parts: the asana class at 6.30pm emphasises
deep relaxation and prepares us for the theoretical and philosophical part of the course at 8pm. It is possible
The Breath of Life – Pranayama course
With Ananta
Thursdays 6.30 – 8pm, February 25 – March 17
Breathing is like no other body function because it connects us to our environment. Plants take in carbon
dioxide and give off oxygen, while human beings and animals inhale oxygen-rich air and exhale air high in
carbon dioxide. Yoga breathing exercises help to increase the gas exchange in the lungs and in all cells of the
body, creating a feeling of freshness, energy and lightness of body and mind. This course is designed to help
you deepen your pranayama practice both in theory and practice. We will go into more intense and prolonged
practice of kapalabhati and anuloma viloma, in addition to learning some of the minor pranayama techniques.
Recommended reading: Science of Pranayama by Swami Sivananda.
Ananta is staff at the Sivananda Yoga Ashram in France and a long time disciple of Swami Vishnudevananda.
He has been teaching Hatha Yoga in the Sivananda Yoga Teachers’Training courses for over 15 years.
light on how to expand the mind.
Rudraprayag is an old, traditional pilgrim destination at the confluence of the Alaknanda and the Mandakini rivers, both of
which flow into the Ganges. It is high in the mountains at 890 meters. The surrounding area reflects the spiritual thought
waves of many generations of pilgrims, who walked through this unspoiled natural environment offering prayers. The ATTC
will be held at Sivananda Kutir which is located near the village of Netala, 8 km north of Uttarkashi. Uttarkashi is well known
for its community of sadhus and swamis who live in various Ashrams along the Ganga.
Sivananda Yoga – for over 50 years in the West
The Yoga Masters
Swami Sivananda
(1887 – 1963)
Swami Sivananda, a great saint
of modern India, made the
timeless wisdom of Yoga
and Vedanta known to the
whole world.
“Serve, love, give, purify, meditate, realise”, these
teachings are the spiritual strength behind the
Sivananda Yoga Vedanta Centres and have inspired
many practitioners to live a life of universal love and
spiritual unity. Swami Sivananda was the founder
of the Divine Life Society Ashram in Rishikesh,
Himalayas, in 1936.
Swami Vishnudevananda
(1927 – 1993)
It was the life’s work of Swami
Vishnudevananda to teach Yoga in the
name of his Master, Swami Sivananda.
He founded the International
Sivananda Yoga Vedanta Centres
in 1957 and the “True World Order”, an institution
to promote universal peace. Overcoming internal and
external limitations was the message behind his numerous
peace missions. Swami Vishnudevananda is known as an
international authority on Hatha and Raja Yoga and the
author of The Complete Illustrated Book of Yoga, as well
as Meditation and Mantras.
“Health is Wealth. Inner Peace is
Happiness. Yoga shows the Way.”
