On the green the difference is obvious. Again
the almost perfect Arc Shape of the trajectory
is achieved by the high level of engineering
used and extremely accurate machining. The
bowl’s shape is machined to 4 decimal places,

while other brands seem to struggle to hold
their line, either going straight on, hooking

The Dynamic has a bias that is a very even arc.
You will find there is not a hint of a swoop or cut as
the bowl reaches the head.
Take a look at the top of the bowl and you’ll note
how the bias falls away. This is the result of very
accurate engineering. The form (shape) is machined
to 4 decimal places, a level of accuracy previously
unachievable. Combined with the precise design of
the bowl, which is quite unlike any other brands, a
stability in the wind is realised that was simply not
previously attainable. Aero Bowls turn into the wind
(not a gale) and take less grass with the wind. They
do not hook, come in at right angles or go straight
when they should turn.
Both the Dynamic and Optima’s incredibly even
trajectory is an obvious advantage on the green.
Add a metre or two of weight and the bowls stand
up like none other, making the up shot very much
easier. Because the bowls do not “die”at the finish
shot making is a whole lot more consistent for
every level of bowler.
The Dynamic is our biggest seller and although
we term it narrow bias,it is by no means a straight
line. You can go around or under any bowl more
accurately than ever.
The Optima (top right)
The Dynamic and Optima are very close cousins.
Again it’s the same line every time except the
Optima will take a little more grass, between 15
cms and 30 cms, depending on green conditions.

We do not adjust bowls after manufacture. They
either come off the machine as a perfect bowl, or
they are thrown away. The only reason they may
not be perfect is if an air bubble was trapped in the
blank from which the bowl is made. This can only
be discovered on the testing table.
So whether you choose Dynamic or Optima you are
in world class company as Brett Wilkie uses both.
Neither Brett Wilkie or Jeremy Henry would have
changed brands unless they knew that they had the
best bowl money can buy - a bowl that performs in
all conditions.
Brett and Jeremy like to win so the best equipment
is an obvious choice.
Aero Bowls are of course sold in New Zealand and
both of these models are entirely suitable for every
type of NZ Green. Richard Girvan, Shannon McIllroy,
Peter Belliss, Rowan Brassey, Val Smith and Matt

By the time you read this article a new season will be upon us, and with it the usual mutterings about
selectors and their obvious shortcomings (who elected them again?), new recruits will be sized up
against the old stager and discounted as a johnny come lately, (remember he is not one of US), the
greens will be either too slow or too fast and numbers as always will be tight.
Every club has one or more of the above member’s who never seem
to be satisfied with what in the main, their own volunteers are providing.
Perhaps each of us before we start firing the arrows need to remind
ourselves that clubs cannot survive without the committed volunteer;
which allows the rest of us to simply turn up on our prescribed playing
date and play the game we enjoy. Let’s all take responsibility for
supporting those who support us in playing the game we love.
Bowls Australia
The CEO and I had the opportunity to travel recently to Launceston
for the Bowls Australia AGM, where the states and territories elect the
board members due for election and to partake in a series of meetings
with our counterparts. Six nominations were received for the BA board
to fill three vacancies, with Joe Aarons and Barbara Gilbert as incumbent
directors being returned and Nigel Smith of the South Tweed club joining
the board for the first time.
The BA Constitution now requires the board to internally elect
a President, which will occur at their meeting in late October.
Congratulations to Joe, Barbara and Nigel on their appointments.
National Insurance Program
Over the past 18 months BA has sought to maximize the economies
of scale available from within the national bowling community to
appoint a national preferred supplier of insurance. After much hard
work two preferred tenders have been identified and following a
board recommendation to the states and territories, most likely in late
October an announcement will be made. It is a key objective of the
preferred supplier status that cheaper premiums will flow through to
clubs and although there will be no compulsion for clubs to utilize the
services of the preferred supplier, clearly the opportunity to compare
existing services and costs should be of benefit. Further information
will be forwarded as it comes to hand.
World Championships
From 24 November – 9 December, Adelaide will host the 2012 World
Championships. At the BA meeting, national coach Steve Glasson
provided a detailed briefing on the work being undertaken to ensure the
best possible chances of success – and believe me no stone is being
left unturned in this regard ! I would encourage all bowlers to take the
opportunity to visit Adelaide and watch the world’s best in action; and
of course to voice your support for the green and gold. Specific details

Presidents’ Forum
Information has been sent to club secretaries with regard to a
likely Presidents’ Forum in mid December. Clubs are invited to submit
agenda items for consideration at the forum by 31 October. These
forums have been very successful in recent times in aiding two way
communication between clubs and the Bowls WA administration and
we encourage club committees to become involved in the process.
Juniors success
Finally my hearty congratulations to our juniors and their outstanding
performances in Launceston. I was able to watch a number of the
finals matches and each of our players performed extremely well
in almost gale force wind conditions. To take off the boys, girls and
overall titles is a first for Western Australia and augers well for an
exciting future in the game.

Pleasingly the first major BWA event of the
season the Men’s state fours saw a 43%
increase in entries, a great outcome and a key
objective of the administration and fixtures & events
committee. The specific reasoning is arguable but the ability for
many clubs to obtain valuable match practice the week prior
to the commencement of pennant is certainly one explanation.
The hosting of the sectional play on excellent grass greens at
Doubleview, Manning, Cockburn and Bassendean so early in the
season will no doubt further encourage teams into the future.
However there has been a tightening up in the nomination of
teams received after the closing date. In essence these teams will
not be included in the draw, unless a team withdraws from the field;
irrespective of whether byes are within the field. Once the draw is
published only teams received prior to that draw being made public
will be used. No changes will be made in the 24 hours prior to the
commencement of the event.
Whilst on state events some key changes to the ladies schedule
this season will see the Pairs and Fours competitions commencing
on a Sunday and the triples post pennant season commencing on
a Saturday. These changes are specifically designed to encourage
working ladies to enter teams and again try and return the events to an
appropriate level of nomination – a requirement if they are going to hold
their position of importance on the state calendar. It is acknowledge
that these changes will not suit every country league; however research
has shown the majority will now be able to play in the events; something
that has been badly lacking in recent years. Like everything these
changes will be reviewed in the off season; although self evident by the
numbers nominating.
Field of Play changes
There have again been some less radical amendments, at least in
comparison to 2011/2012, to this season’s various metropolitan pennant
conditions of play. These amendments in full were communicated some
weeks ago to clubs and also lodged on the BWA website for general
information. Finals formats, extreme weather wait periods and the
removal of the greens requirement to run 13sec. for pennant are a few
of the changes and all bowlers, but particularly umpires are urged to be
up to speed (no pun intended) with them for week 1.
Capitation and the social bowler
Some weeks ago I communicated to clubs a clarification to the
capitation requirements of members. I have received a number of calls
and letters decrying the supposedly changed position of now requiring
corporate “guests” to be capitated – THIS IS NOT THE CASE.
The definition of members requiring capitation has not changed. We
are all aware of the need to capitate full members; however those
restricted or regular social users of a club’s greens similarly need to
pay capitation. Most clubs will have three general categories within their
membership; the full, the restricted and the social (bar). The initial two
categories due to their use of greens are required to be capitated- the
third is not. The capitation model is that which is used to fund our game.
If this model is abused, sidestepped or purposely ignored, then the
onus will fall back upon the full member and costs will escalate. If we
all accept our responsibilities to the game as a whole, then the benefits
will be widespread and the sport far more sustainable into the future.
Finally may I join the President in congratulating our juniors and their
coaches Jaewyn Norton (girls), Colin Johnson (boys) and Elio Tolotti
(manager) for their wonderful performances in Launceston – both on
and off the green. It made for an enjoyable series of meetings with our
contemporaries from the other states and territories!

What’s New with Inclusive Practices at Bowls WA?
Innaloo Sportsmen’s Club Monday BowlAbility program
In the lead up to our 2012/13 Pennant Season the Monday
BowlAbility program is changing its schedule from every Monday
to the 2nd and 4th Monday of each month between 10:30 am and
11:30 am, starting in October. We look forward to continuing the
program during the spring and summer season.
Our Friday BowlAbility program continues to bring in new
participants with the addition of Intework Gosnells coming in
October; we are looking forward to meeting our newest members
and coaching them in the game of bowls.

male) to participate in the Disability
section, which runs parallel with the
main event. The entry categories

Blind and are working to fill the
Intellectual category with Julie
Srhoy from Spearwood Bowling
Club and Robert Hughes from East
Fremantle Bowling Club. Julie is
already in training as we can see
below! We would really like to
send bowlers from the wheelchair
category… any clubs who have
individuals bowling in a wheelchair
for their Pennant season are

week at Herb Graham Recreation
Centre in Mirrabooka.
TCCP: A boccia ramp works wonders on a bowling green!
On Saturday September 22nd a group from The Centre for
Cerebral Palsy (TCCP) called the ‘Table for 8’ enjoyed a Come & Try
at Lake Monger Bowling Club. The members had a fantastic time
and can’t wait to return on Saturday 20th of October, along with
Be Friends, for another roll up. The group will be gathering again
Sunday 25th November to celebrate Social Inclusion week and hope
to have many different disability organizations bowling together.
More updates on Inclusive Bowls Practices in WA will be included
in the next issue of Jack Hi – if you have a story to tell, or would
like more information on Inclusive Bowls, please let Denise know.

FROM THE COUNTRY DIRECTOR
Kerry Andersen
The September meeting of the Board of Bowls WA was held at the Halls Head Bowling Club
in the Murray Districts League. This was the first regional meeting of the Board, which was
followed by an open forum to discuss current issues with Zone, League and Club members.
Capitation, the Country Coaching Enhancement Scheme and Country
Week were some of the topics covered.
The response to the regional meeting was positive, and it is
proposed to continue with a visit to the Eastern Zone next year.
The Country Coaching Enhancement Scheme for sixteen men and
sixteen women from the four Zones, was held on the weekend of
September 22, 23. The Doubleview Bowling Club was host to the men,
and the Melville Bowling Club was host to the women. It is encouraging
to note that this programme continues to attract many nominations.
Bowlers now have the opportunity to be recognised and accepted into
the Bowls WA Academy to further their skills (See article in August-
September issue of Jack Hi). A full report of the weekend can be found
later in this publication.
Bowls is being brought to the country with the radio programme
“Without Bias” now being broadcast on a Sunday morning at 7am.
With hosts Jack Heverin and Barrie Lester, country bowlers can now
hear all the latest news on the game. Check the website for the radio
station broadcasting nearest to you.
Congratulations to the State Junior bowlers who have won the Overall
Champions Trophy at the National Championships in Launceston. We
are very proud to acknowledge our country representatives - David
Downey (Lake Grace), Mathew Ayres (Dudley Park), Jamie Conway
(Pemberton) and Elizabeth Allan (Dudley Park), Dayna Cant (Dudley
Park), Tanisha Johnson (Dudley Park). Special congratulations to David
Downey, Tanisha Johnson and Elizabeth Allan who have been selected
for the National Under 18 Squad.
Congratulations to country players - Bev Scott (Capel), Lee Poletti
(Geraldton), Noelene Keefe (Gingin) and Geoff Whyatt (Eaton), Eddie
Dodd (Wonthella) - who have been selected to represent WA in the
State Over 60s teams to travel to Queanbeyan, ACT in October.
With the pennant season about to begin, clubs will be active
once again. The Country Committee is to meet in November and I
encourage clubs to forward items for the agenda to their committee
member. We are here to represent you and improve country bowls,
and need your assistance to do this.

EDITORIAL COMMENT
A highlight of this issue is the fantastic
results from our Under 18 bowlers in
Tasmania winning medals in six of eight
disciplines was a terrific effort and without
checking the record books probably
the best ever from a WA Junior side at
National Championships. Congratulations
to all players who feature on page 19
especially David Downey, Tanisha Johnson
and Elizabeth Allan who were selected in
Australian Under 18 Squads after their top performances.
Also covered in this issue is a Premier League Preview (page
22&23) plus all the results from off season carnivals both metro
and country.
I was lucky enough to venture out to the Goldfields for a part
holiday/bowling/racing trip and enjoyed every second of it. On
page 32 I take a look at the Boulder Bowling Carnival and all that
the Goldfields has to offer plus a trip down memory lane revisiting
the career of the legend that was Jack Osmetti.
Bowling Clubs should not miss out on the boost your
membership competition being run by Bowls WA in conjunction
with Apia. Full details available on page 36.

“Have a Go” Day will be held at Burswood Park on Wednesday 14
November and the Bowlsmobile will feature at the event. It will be
manned all day encouraging people to “Have a Go” at rolling some
bowls and joining in the fun.

Selection modules
After consultation with national
coach Steve Glasson OAM, the
high performance team and
state/territory associations,
Bowls Australia is pleased to have
recently released the next level of
the coach accreditation structure
– the Selection and Competition
Modules.
The modules provide the next
step in the pathway for bowls
coaches in Australia and also
serve the additional purpose of
providing valuable education to
players and coaches nationwide.
The Selection Module is
designed for club coaches,
selectors and others who are
keen to ensure their club has best
practice selection standards.
Coaches should attend this
workshop to learn more about
the benchmarking of players
which can assist with selection.
Selectors and committee
members should attend this
workshop to learn how to create
a selection policy and a healthy
philosophy for their club.
The Competition Module
focuses on the aspects of
competitive bowls. Coaches
should attend this workshop
to gain further information on
how to best prepare players for
competition, where to find the
laws of the sport and conditions
of play and understand how
to educate players to focus
on what they can control. The
workshop contains practical on
green elements where players
can discover what their own shot
timeline is and how best to collect
statistics.
You do not need to be an
accredited coach to attend a
workshop – it’s open to players,
committee members, selectors
and other interested persons.

conducted in your area.
Advanced Coach
In addition, Bowls Australia is
excited about the implemented of
the Advanced Coach accreditation.
Each four-day course covers
topics such as knowing your
own coaching style, coaching
philosophy, how to plan your
program and how to teach,
observe and provide feedback
to your players are all key
components throughout coach
preparation. Player preparation
covers how players acquire skills,
how to analyse movement, the
principles of physiology and
working with a player’s mental
ability.
The course is conducted face
to face with topics delivered by
experts in their field and costs
$500 for coaches who are
recognised by the state/territory
association or $1000 if they are
not recognised.
The Advanced Coach
accreditation is ideally suited
to coaches who STA’s believe
will provide valuable coaching
experience to the STA at a
premier league club, development
squad, zone/group/district and
state level. This may include
coaches who are currently
coaching at a zone/group/
district level coaches, state junior
coaches, state assistant coaches,
premier level pennant clubs and
development squad coaches.

The new season is upon us once again with a few new rules for
all Umpires and controlling bodies to contemplate and apply as
necessary. One such rule is contained for the first time in the Field
of Play rules for Pennants in our State, incorporating a much sought
after direction as to how we might limit the damage and subsequent
cost of repairs to the numerous synthetic greens a lot of our clubs
have opted for. Please not however, this RULE applies to all surfaces
as necessary.
FOPR 24. Player damaging the Green
The Controlling Body shall be at liberty to warn a player if in their
opinion he is causing damage to the green. Following the warning, if
the player continues to cause damage to the green, the Controlling
Body may request the player to retire from the green and take no
further part in the match.
24.1 Refusing to leave the green
If the player refuses to leave the green, the player will be
considered to become a defaulting player as per law 1.3.3
and law 1.3.10 will apply. The umpire’s decision is final.
Of course, the “Controlling Body” is Bowls WA in Pennants and the
Umpire-of-The-Day (of which there can be ONLY ONE per venue per
round) is the representative of that Controlling Body at each venue.
The rule will require the Umpire of the Day to apply it appropriately.
If more than one Umpire is officiating due to separation of greens
etc, The Umpire-of-the-Day will be the only person to make the
determination upon appeal from any other Umpire-of-the-green.
This rule has been brought about by the increasing pressure from
some clubs that are or have experienced varying levels of damage
from “dropped-bowl” deliveries in the main. These are bowls that are
delivered from a height that results in the ‘denting’ of the compacted
material immediately beneath the synthetic surface. It was felt that
bowls delivered in a proper manner, from around 30cm or below,
would be unlikely to cause damage in this way and the full life
expectancy of a synthetic would be within the realms of the possible.
However, the reality of the matter is that far from the years of carefree,
low maintenance greens, some synthetics appear to be costing
considerable sums to repair after only a very short period and,
anecdotal comments would indicate that warranties are potentially
negated by such damage.
FOP Rule 24 should encourage coaches of clubs with players known
to have difficulties with delivery of their bowls from a position low
enough to avoid damaging the green, to take those players aside
and attempt to correct their delivery in one of three ways; correcting
their stance at point of delivery so that the point of release of the
bowl is low enough; addition of a supporting walking stick (with the
appropriate 75mm rubber base) to help maintain balance if balance
is the issue; or by using one of the 3 brands of approved bowling
arms (requirements and application forms for their use is available in
downloadable form from the Bowls WA website link ~ www.bowlswa.
com.au).
If a club selects a team with players of known delivery difficulties
to play at a venue that has a synthetic surface, it may be prudent to

Congratulations to all those who attended the Metro course and accredited or re-accredited (a total of
some 48 aspirants) as a result of passing their Umpires exams in September. A particular thanks goes to
those two Clubs, Yokine and Mt Pleasant, who provided the use of their premises to allow your BWA Rules Committee
to conduct these tutorials and exams. In addition, our Country League Umpires’ reps have been busy ensuring the continuity
of skills with a further 75 umpires being recorded during the off-season. Special mention should be accorded Ian Thomas of
Geraldton for going out of his way recently to conduct a course at Karratha resulting in 7 accrediting for an area, that due to
logistical reasons, there were no current Umpires!
include an additional player to act as a substitute in the event of Rule
24 being invoked.
This rule is NOT intended to be considered as a penalisation of
players but as an attempt to reduce the ever increasing impost on
members of clubs with synthetics toward the upkeep caused by
avoidable damage such deliveries contribute. Hopefully it will be
accepted in this light by all.
The impact upon clubs with grass greens is not affected in quite
the same way as it is relatively simple to ‘top-dress’ the divots for a
reasonably rapid recovery of the playing surface, though as stated
above, the rule will apply to ALL surfaces.
While on other matters in the Field of Play Rules, players are
reminded that sitting on banks during play is expressly forbidden,
primarily for saftey reasons;
FOPR 16.1 Players
Players directly participating in a game are not permitted to sit on
the banks with any portion of their body in the ditch or on the green
whilst play is in progress.
• For the first offence on that day, the player shall be warned by the
Umpire of the Day.
• A fine will be applied for each and every continuing offence.
Umpires will be asked to enforce the start-time requirements for
Pennants this season with players that do not turn up before the
actual start of play time, for whatever reason, do forego the right to
trial ends, even though they do arrive within the allowed 30 minute
contingency period outlined in the Field of Play Rules. So players,
please ensure you arrive at the venue of play at the correct time to
allow for trial ends under the rules.
And finally, I have been requested to remind players that they or
the managers in a Pennants side, to determine who should bowl
first, should “toss a coin” (NOT ‘roll-a-bowl’) as per Law 18.2.1 The
managers in a side game (or, in their absence, representatives of the
sides), skips in a team game or opponents in Singles should toss a
coin.
18.2.2 The winner of the toss should choose whether to:
18.2.2.1 place the mat and then deliver the jack and the first bowl;
or
18.2.2.2 tell the opposing player to place the mat and deliver the
jack and the first bowl (the opposing player cannot refuse).
18.2.3 The option chosen by the manager or representative who
wins the toss in a side game will apply to all teams or
Singles players (or a combination of teams and Singles
players) who make up the side.
The Rules Committee wishes all bowlers all the best for the coming
2012 – 2013 season and that by adhering to the various Laws and
rules, everyone will enjoy their chosen sport all the more.
