Florida - what does that conjure up in your mind? Many people would<br />
immediately think of Disneyworld and the abundance of Theme Parks<br />
for which the sunshine state is famous! But...Florida does have so<br />
much more to offer, with water sports, wildlife and scenery being high<br />
on the list. The Gulf Coast has some wonderful beaches with white<br />
“sugar” sand and calm waters, with Naples in particular being a famous<br />
fishing and dolphin watching destination. The avid Golfer will be well<br />
provided for with over fourteen hundred Golf Courses to choose from,<br />
many being of championship standard. Divers and snorkellers can<br />
enjoy watching beautiful tropical fish, various interesting wrecks and<br />
an underwater statue of Christ at Key Largo at the top of the famous<br />
Florida Keys, a string of tropical islands stretching 120 miles from<br />
the southernmost tip of Florida, between the Atlantic and the Gulf<br />
of Mexico. Drive the “highway that goes to sea” to reach the furthest<br />
point, Key West and along the way watch the amazing habitat of birds<br />
such as great white herons, spoonbills, ospreys, gulls and cormorants.<br />
Key West is renowned for its laid back atmosphere and as a destination<br />
for fishing, boating and scuba diving, and is also home to the Ernest<br />
Hemingway Exhibition. Generally, fishing, boating, kayaking and<br />
water boarding enthusiasts will delight in the many opportunities the<br />

in human space flight, just an hour’s easy drive from Orlando on the<br />
Atlantic coast is Merritt Island, home to Kennedy Space Centre from<br />
where brave explorers ventured to the Moon on the famous Apollo<br />
missions and later 135 Space Shuttle launches. I have been lucky<br />
enough over the years to enjoy much of what Florida has to offer,<br />
but have to say that experiencing three launches and one return to<br />
Earth is hard to beat. Just a day at the Centre gives an interesting and<br />
educational overview of the whole space programme, including the<br />
International Space Station and the Hubble Telescope and of course<br />
it now houses the shuttle Atlantis in a remarkable exhibit for all to<br />
see. If you do decide to visit Florida be sure to pack an extra suit case<br />
to bring back all the goodies you are sure to pick up in the excellent<br />
shopping facilities, ranging from up-market chic boutiques on the<br />
Gulf coast to the many Malls and Factory Outlet stores elsewhere!<br />
