What is happening in your clubs?
Bluebonnet Squares will be hosting as guest callers Al Frazier, February 15 and Toni Oxendine, February
23. NOTE: The dance with Toni is on a Tuesday evening not the club’s regular Monday dance night. The
location is the Spring Wood Methodist Church where the club regularly meets. On February 29th join us
for a HOBO Dance. Come in your best Hobo attire and enjoy the fun. Any Square Dancers are welcome to
join the club on Mondays at the Spring Wood Methodist Church, 1711 Cypress Creek Parkway, Houston,
TX 77090 (FM 1960 West across from Denny’s) from 7:30 pm – 9:30 pm for Plus and Mainstream Dancing.

The Alvin Country Squares will be hosting a special dance each month this year. At each special dance we will be
raising funds for the Teen Scholarship Fund. This is being done in loving memory of Jerry Tucker, who so passionately
believed in and supported the Teen Scholarship program. We hope that many of you will be able to join us for
these special dances. Marilyn Waguespack will be cueing rounds for us, and we are so glad to have her back! Our next
special dance is our Winter Dance on February 4th at 7:00 p.m. Gary Sanders will do his usual incredible job of calling,
and you won’t want to miss it. We love to have fun in Alvin, and we invite you all to come join in!

Presidents’ Message
It has been a whirlwind of activity this past month as we prepared
to take over the Presidency from Nanette Tucker. With Jerry Tucker’s
passing and her responsibilities with her 97-year old mother, Nanette
was not able to handle the HSRDC Presidency by herself. We accepted
the challenge of this office once again to assist a very new (to this organization)
Exec Board. We would not have done this were it not for a very capable set of individuals.
We began the year with our 1st quarter Council Meeting and the Presidents Ball on January
23rd. It was a great way to start the year, and we congratulate all our Club Presidents on their
accomplishments.
February brings the start of our HSRDC Visitations to the El Campo Cotton Tromp and
Hanger Squares Anniversary Dance. We are sorry that we cannot be in two places at once since
both these dances fall on the same night.
We round off the month with our first graduation. Brazos Bottoms Belles and Beaus will be
ending their classes at the end of the month. HSRDC will be there bearing gifts for the graduates.
They will each receive a discount admission to the 68th Houston Hoedown on October
28th and 29th.

History of the Presidents Ball
The HSRDC Presidents Ball was first held during the year of
1974-'75, when Lee & Lettie Reed were President. The purpose
was to honor and appreciate all the Club Presidents, who were
admitted as guests of HSRDC.
Leadership Seminars were available for all dancers who were
interested. A catered dinner and dance followed the Seminars.
This was a Sunday afternoon and evening event, held at a hotel
restaurant .
The Presidents Ball was dormant for a few years until the Reeds
asked Homer & Cindy Markos to revive it during their year as
President in 1983-'84. They, and their fellow Board members,
updated it with very little change, and the annual dates were
set for February.
Certificates of Appreciation were, and still are, presented to the
Clubs' Presidents. This is a very well attended annual event, but
the Seminars "went by the wayside". The dinner is now potluck,
and the dance winds up this very nice event for our hard
working dancers. HSRDC Past Presidents are recognized by
being introduced and asked to stand.
Sometime after the Presidents Ball was no longer held at the
hotel, it was held for several years at the Sugar Land
Community Center.
It is now being held at the different venues where the clubs
dance around the Houston area, and is currently held on
Saturdays when most dancers can attend. HSRDC tries not to
conflict with other Special Dances.
