12 CELLISTS IN MOSCOW, 2009 

The 12 cellists of the Berliner Philharmoniker performed 

for the first time on Easter Monday in 1974 in the 

Salzburg Morzarteum. Since then the cello group has 

surprised many music lovers with their unique sound 

combinations. They demonstrate how individual cellists 

can constitute a wonderful musical ensemble.

The New York Times. 

A handful of times per year, this group of specialists 

from all over Europe, the United States, Japan and 

Australia meet for three or four weeks to prepare and 

perform the new programme with constant reference to 

the historical context and original intentions. In the field 

of 19th Century music, no other orchestra in the world 

goes to such lengths all of which makes this a unique 

high energy performance of Beethovens’ famous work 

in the regal setting of the Concert Noble in Brussels. 

This is Beethoven as the maestro himself intended.

BENJAMIN STEENS AND JACqUES- 

ANTOINE BRESCH PLAY BACH, 2009 

A baroque encounter between Benjamin Steens on 

the clavichord and Jacques-Antoine Bresch on the

flute. In the beautiful setting of Chateau Freÿr, with a 

neat technique and rhythmical precision, this musical 

duo bring in a masterly touch to a selection of Bach 

masterpieces.

HET BRONZEN HART, 2007 

The grand oratory “Het Bronzen Hart” was composed 

in 1961 as an ode to the St. Rombouts Cathedral and 

its carillon. To celebrate the 100th anniversary of the 

birth of composer Gaston Feremans, “Het Bronzen 

Hart” was performed in this tremendous setting with 

an immense choir of 250 singers, a children’s choir, a 

symphonic orchestra and of course the carillon.

BRAHMS’ EIN DEUTSCHES REqUIEM, 2008 

The Toccata and Fuga in D is perhaps the most famous 

organ piece by Johann Sebastian Bach. Leopold 

Stokowski’s adaptation of the work made it even more

famous not least since the symphonic version was 

used in the opening part of Walt Disney’s “Fantasia”. 

Stokowski is considered one of the greatest conductors 

of the 20th century and is responsible for making the 

music of many contemporary composers (Mahler, 

Stravinsky, Schönberg) more accessible for audiences.

CHŒUR@CŒUR, 2008 

Choir at the heart of everything. A belief that the Flemish 

Radio Choir and the amateur choir, Musa Horti share. 

They join forces in this programme to reveal the best 

of their repertoire. The “Messe pour double choeur” 

by Frank Martin is simple yet devotional and was 

doubtless influenced by him aged just ten hearing

Bach’s St Matthew’s Passion. Vic Nees’s “Stella Maris” 

is remarkably sensitive and religiously inspired. Apart 

from these modest and poetic masterpieces the 

programme also features new works from Alain De Ley 

and established classics from Gustav Mahler.

“HAPPY BIRTHDAY”, 2008 

The Brussels Philharmonic celebrates its 10th anniversary 

with a festive programme. The ouverture to Oberon 

by Weber, the Violin Concerto by Mendelssohn and 

the Fifth Symphony by Shostakovich are all highlights 

from the orchestra’s repertoire. From Weber’s fairytale 

atmosphere to Shostakovich’s tragic Fifth Symphony, 

“Happy Birthday!” is an inspiring celebration.

“PETITE MESSE SOLENNELLE”, 2008 

This is a chance to get to know another side of Rossini’s 

musical talent. The Italian composer is best known for 

his operatic offerings, but also composed religious 

works. His “Petite Messe Solennelle” requires only 

twelve singers. The Flemish Radio Choir performs in the 

perfect accoustics of the Concertgebouw in Bruges.

WEBERN, DEBUSSY & STRAvINSKY, 2009 

Michel Tabachnik conducts the Brussels Philharmonic 

in a programme that focuses on the year 1913. It was 

in this year that three composers created revolutionary 

works. Anton Webern, Claude Debussy and Igor 

Stravinsky all broke with conventional music tradition 

to put their stamp upon the contemporary music 

scene. Webern completed the “5 Stücke für Orkester”,

for Debussy launched “Jeux” y and Stravinsky with 

“Le Sacre du Printemps” which provoked a riot at it’s 

premiere and transformed the way in which subsequent 

composers thought about rhythmic structure.

Since 2008 when it made its first tentative steps onto 

the musical stage, the Chamber Orchestra of Belgium 

has built up an excellent reputation especially for fresh 

interpretations. 

Conductor, Ben Haemhouts brings passion and dynamic 

to the performance which captures the revolutionary 

moment of the music’s conception and premiere. This 

is a vibrant, well balanced, free flowing performance of 

Beethoven’s epic tragic poem.

BENJAMIN BRITTEN SIMPLE SYMPHONY, 

2010 

Dedicated to Audrey Alston (Mrs Lincolne Sutton) who 

was Britten’s viola teacher during his childhood. The 

piece is based on eight themes which Britten wrote 

during his childhood (two per movement) and which 

he completed at age twenty. Here the string orchestra 

revels in the “Playful Pizzicato” passages, eases 

through the “Sentimental Saraband” and launches 

whole heartedly into the “Frolicsome Finale”.

An extensive range of choirs gathered in the Eurocam 

Studios for this Choir Festival. The theme was 

Christmas but the choirs were also invited to perform 

the very best works from their own repertoire. Hence

• Walter Boeykens 

Walter Boeykens built an illustrious career as a clarinet player 

and has played at many of the biggest international venues. 

Currently he teaches at the Fontys Academy in Tilburg, but 

luckily he also still performs. 


• Rudy De Sutter and Christiaan Goetgeluck 

Rudy De Sutter has an excellent reputation as a pianist and 

composer. The press even compared his music to such greats 

as Keith Jarrett and Erik Satie. Lyrical and introverted, but also 

rhythmic and explosive. 

Pianist and composer, Christiaan Goetgeluck interprets 

classical and modern pieces. He composes piano concertos, 

classical solo pieces for piano and music for theatre, film and 

ballet. His is driven by creativity : “First there is knowledge and 

skill, then there is creativity. For me it is a continuous search 

for original scores, fresh ideas, beauty and emotion.”

“Ksenia Morozova combines an uncanny natural artistry with 

her own individuality and maturity in her playing… Possessing 

an awesome technique, she expresses deep emotions and 

insightful musical concepts with equal and extraordinary 

conviction…”, says famous pianist, Nikolai Lugansky about the 

young (born in 1985) and very talented Ksenia Morozova. 


• Jan Pas 

Cellist, Jan Pas studied in Germany and played in various 

orchestras, including the Mannheimer National Theater 

Orchester and the Stuttgart Staatsopern Orkest. In this EXQI 

Classic Session, he is accompanied by Stefano Vismara on 

piano. They perform compositions by Messiaen, Debussy and 

Jacqueline Fontyn.

LA FENICE : “PER IL SANTISSIMO NATALE”

The Italian ensemble La Fenice performs baroque 

compositions by Donati, Monteverdi, Banchieri and 

other Italian masters. Old instruments including the 

cornet, viola da gamba and harpsichord are a key 

feature of their work. This is religious music but with a 

strong theatrical twist, recorded at the Bijloke in

There’s no other composition that Haydn has spent so 

much time on. Die Schöpfung describes and illustrates 

the creation story in a masterly, musical way. The work

SYMPHONIES, 2006 

This is a special treat for all Beethoven admirers. 

Philippe Herreweghe conducts the full nine Symphonies 

of Beethoven. Herreweghe is the acclaimed Flemish 

conductor and founder of Collegium Vocale and the 

Royal Flemish Philharmonic. It’s a joy to watch him 

work with Beethoven’s music and the musicians of the 

Royal Flemish Philharmonic as well as the singers of 

both the Nederlands Kamerkoor and the choir of the 

Brussels Philharmonic (VRK).

HERREWEGHE WITH ALICE COOTE & 

THE ROYAL FLEMISH PHILHARMONIC:

If there was one composition close to Brahms’ heart 

it was his Alto Rhapsody. Quite justifiably he saw this 

rhapsodic piece, using a meditative text by Goethe, as 

one of his best works. This is followed by Schubert’s 

“Great C Major” symphony, an audacious work in which 

the master of song explored all the possibilities offered 

by the orchestra. Philippe Herreweghe conducts and is 

accompanied by the much acclaimed recitalist mezzosoprano 

Alice Coote.

HONG KONG CHINESE ORCHESTRA, 2009 

The Hong Kong Chinese Orchestra specialises in 

contemporary and classical Chinese music played 

on traditional Chinese instruments. Their charismatic 

conductor Yan Huichang isn’t averse to calling on 

audience participation. These highly skilled musicians 

display their versatility in two works by opera-writer 

Guo Wenjing, Doming Lam’s five-movement tone poem 

Autumn Execution and Cheng Dazhao’s YellowRiver 

Capriccio that has the audience joining in on hand-held 

rattle drums. John Howard’s Five Studies complete the 

programme.

PHILHARMONIC : SHOSTAKOvITCH, 2008 

There are few symphonies as appealing as Dimitri 

Shostakovich’s Fifth. After being severely criticised 

by the political establishment, the Russian composer 

created this symphony to please the authorities. 

Whether the combination of tragedy and heroics is to 

be taken seriously is debatable, but undoubtedly this 

symphony was a highlight in Shostakovich’s career.

During his first concert as chief conductor of The 

Royal Flemish Philharmonic, Jaap van Zweden chose 

to interpret great Russian composers. Tchaikovsky is 

considered the greatest Russian romantic composer 

and really lives up to that title in his symphonies. He knew 

perfectly how to translate the restraining conventions 

Beethoven had imposed on the symphonic genre into 

a new and original approach. Here, The Royal Flemish 

Philharmonic and Jaap van Zweden bring Tchaikovsky’s 

Fifth symphony to life.

intricate playing of the Orchestra Barocca di Venezia 

under the demanding gaze of Conductor, Andrea

MESSIAH FOR HAITI, 2010 

In February 2010 the world of classical music 

responded to the earthquake in Haiti. Johan Geerts 

appealed to performers to come together and re-create 

“The Messiah” by G F Handel. There was an over 

whelming response and with a fantastic mix of soloists, 

singers and musicians and just one day to rehearse 

Paul Dombrecht took up the challenge to conduct this 

unique performance.

Pierre-Laurent Aimard is one of the leading performers

NEW YEAR’S CONCERT - GHENT, 2010 

The 20th anniversary of the New Year’s concert of 

the Rotary Club Gent Prinsenhof. They deliberately 

chose a romantic repertoire, played by an experienced 

ensemble : Het Kamerorkest. Conducted by Ivan 

Meylemans, this orchestra performs works of Grieg, 

Tchaikovsky, Handel and Strauss. Together with 

the versatile soprano Anne Cambier, these brilliant 

musicians create a fantastic atmosphere in the 

prestigious Aula Magna in Ghent.

Ning Kam is an exceptional violinist. She studied at the 

Menuhin Music Academy in London and the Cleveland 

Institute of Music in the USA. Not only is her playing

takes great joy in leading the orchestra and this is very 

much a good natured celebration to welcome in the 

New Year.

LES NUITS D’ETOILES CHOIR CONCERTS,

In Les Nuits d’Etoiles (The Nights Of The Stars), the 

stars in question are the members of the Ensemble 

Vocal d’Aquitaine, an impressive choir conducted by 

Jean-Yves Gaudin and the musicians of the Orchestre 

du Festival des Coréades. The impressive Notre-Dame 

church in La Rochelle is the perfect backdrop for this 

series of vocal highlights from the classical and opera

“CONCERTO FOR ORCHESTRA” 

This curiously entitled concerto combines elements 

from Bach fugues to Schoenberg’s atonality that had 

touched Bartok throughout his creative years, while all 

the melodies, harmonies and rhythms are coloured by 

Bartok’s beloved Hungarian folk music. A wondrous, 

vibrant and spontaneous-sounding celebration of life, 

beginning with a primordial coalescing of consciousness 

and culminating in an explosive outburst of defiant 

vitality.

MASTERWORKS 2010: NIKOLAI RIMSKY 

KARSAKOv “SHEHERAZADE” 

Based on the stories from “The Thousand and One 

Nights” this is a real taste of the orient. Sensuality meets 

jeopardy as Sheherazade tells ever more engaging 

stories to save her own life. As Korsakov said in his 

autobiography “The program which guided me during 

the composition of Sheherazade was formed of single, 

disconnected scenes or pictures from The Thousand 

and One Nights distributed among all four movements: 

the sea and Sinbad’s ship, the fantastic tale of the 

Kalander Prince, the prince and the princess. These 

pictures are joined together by the introductions to the 

first, third, and fourth movements, and the intermezzo 

of the third movement--four short sections for violin 

solo, which are associated with Sheherazade, and at 

the same time are supposed to portray the way in which 

she told her wondrous tales to the grim Sultan.”

“The Mission” this is diverse, dynamic and delicious. It is often 

hard to believe that there is only one flute player in the room. 

• Simon Trpcesky. 

Gifted pianist, Simon Trpcesky performs 

pieces by Chopin and Debussy. His playing is intense and the 

audience are so charmed that they demand no less than 3 

encores. 

• Aldo Granato. A young artist and band combining the 

traditional Yiddish way of playing the accordion with 

contemporary music styles such as jazz and elektro. 

• Kathleen McCall & Mario Augustini. 

Two renowned opera 

voices join forces to sing some beautiful arias from the opera 

repertoire.

ARID, 2010 

It may be an intimate club setting but lead singer, 

Jasper Steverlinck still manages to give a big stadium 

performance. With a dynamic vocal range and 

sounding a little like Keane the band also share the 

same contemplative approach to song writing. Having 

started their career by winning talent competitions 

they went on to tour the USA and Europe alongside 

Counting Crows and Suede. Now they are back with 

their 4th album Under the Cold Street Lights.

ARNO LIvE IN OSTEND, 2009 

Possibly the biggest Belgium export after chocolate. 

For 40 years, Arno has provided a stream of biting, 

thoughtful and thought provoking songs. 

Now he returns to his home town of Ostend to re-work 

some of his greatest hits. Accompanied by his band

and 17 international musicians and singers this is the 

first time in 10 years that Arno has permitted a TV 

recording of one of his concerts. Don’t miss the big, 

brass additions to the all time classic Putain Putain, the 

unadulterated fun of Bathroom Singer or his interesting 

lyrical take on his beloved Brussels.

Recognisable tunes, sharp lyrics and of course the prominent 

appearance of Lily Allen : live at the Main Square Festival in 

Arras. 


• Placebo 

The rock gods of Placebo play before a wild crowd in the 

French city of Arras. The soaring guitars, famous hits and new 

songs from the recent album “Battle for the sun” clearly left 

nobody untouched. Undoubtedly one of the most remarkable 

concerts of the 2009 edition of the Main Square Festival.

Her debut album “This Is the Life” was a massive success.

Strong rhythms, strong melodies and Kele’s tenuous and 

cutting vocals. The post-punk and rock band from London play

An indie rock band from Fullerton, California, USA with a name 

inspired by a trip to an Eastern European playground where 

statues had been dumped following the fall of Communism.

a set of gold old fashioned pop-rock.

With their exceptional album “Seldom Seen Kid” Elbow really 

hit the big time and now they look like they are truly reveling in 

the massive audiences on the festival scene. In the glorious 

setting of La Citadelle in Arras their classic hits like “One Day 

Like This” seem even more anthemic. 

• Kaiser Chiefs 


Energy, fun and not a little gratuitous violence as microphone 

stands are sent flying. Front man Ricky Wilson entertains via 

a mixture of tracks from their four albums with songs like “Oh 

My God” and “I Predict a Riot” and “Never Miss a Beat” never 

failing to cause a frenzy. 

• Moby 


He might make up some of his lyrics but he is always having 

fun and doesn’t fail to serve up his best known songs such as 

“Why Does My Heart Feel So Bad”. 

• PJ Harvey 


Dressed in what appears to be a wedding dress with some

sort of feather headdress this is a journey through the haunting 

vocals and assorted instruments that inhabit the world of PJ 

Harvey. 

• Two Door Cinema Club 


Quirky and energetic with catchy melodies. With their 

memorable synthesiser based tunes, the band pounds out 

songs from their debut album “Tourist History” creating a nonstop 

dance party for festival goers. 

• White Lies 


Hailing from West London “White Lies” are not short of 

confidence. Front man, Harry McVeigh demands the crowd 

give it their all and in return rewards them with intimate 

exchanges. Powerful and energetic not least during their 

familiar singles “Unfinished Business” and “Death”. 

BRUSSELS JAZZ ORCHESTRA FEATURING 

DAvID LINX, 2008 

He is a singer, composer, lyricist and producer but most 

of all David Linx is an acclaimed jazz vocalist who has 

worked with some of the greats in the jazz scene. His 

last Album “Changing Faces” recorded with the 

Brussels Jazz Orchestra was released in October 2007. 

This is an intimate recording of the concert following 

the CD release.

Ever since 1953, at the start of May the population 

in the city of Neerpelt nearly doubles. Thousands of 

young people from all around Europe come to this little 

town in North Limburg. The European Music Festival 

for Young People. The result is a wonderful blend of 

youthful enthusiasm and impressive musical abilities.

• Pierre Anckaert Trio 

Pierre Anckaert was the winner of Jazz Hoeilaart in 2007. With 

the Pierre Anckaert Trio, he brings contemporary jazz with 

classical accents and latin influences. Complex themes, catchy 

tunes and fluent rhythms. A promising Belgian jazz trio. 

• Brazzaville 

Six musicians inspired by jazz, funk and afrobeat. Brazzaville 

finds inspiration in the music of Miles Davis, Sly Stone and Fela 

Kuti. An eclectic mixture of funky grooves, African rhythms and 

jazzy melodies. Discover Brazzaville performing in the Eurocam 

Media Center studios. 

• Alano Gruarin Trio 

As a kid he wanted to play the drums, but later he discovered 

the piano. Now Alano Gruarin hits the Belgian jazz stages with 

his fellow-musicians Werner Lauscher and Maarten Moesen as 

the Alano Gruarin Trio. Jazz Piano straight from the heart. 

• Backback 

Backback is an unconventional jazz trio. Filip Wauters on 

the guitar, Marc De Maeseneer on saxophone and Giovanni 

Barcella on drums. All three of them are experienced 

musicians in various genres. Hence, the sound of Backback is 

based on many styles : jazz, funk, rock and free jazz.

EXQI Jazz presents a very special performance. It’s the first 

time that these two talented, rising jazz stars have shared the 

same stage. Here they launch into a selection of pieces by 

amongst others the great Miles Davis. 

• Hijaz 

The multi-cultural quartet Hijaz combines elements from both 

world music and jazz, and mixes these into a unique Europeanmeditarranean 

yet simultaneously jazzy sound. 

• Swing Dealers 

Soul and swing from the old days. Swing Dealers bring the 

swing jazz of the fifties back to life. 

• Fré Desmyter Quartet 

Pianist, Fré Desmyter is accompanied by fellow-musicians 

John Ruocco (tenor sax), Manolo Cabras (bass) and Marek 

Patrman (drums). 

• Sabin Todorov Trio 

They started out as a folk band. Nowadays, the Sabin Todorov 

Trio brings an explosive mixture of lyrical jazz and folk with 

hints of free jazz. Sabin Todorov includes the traditional Balkan 

music of his homeland, Bulgaria into his own compositions. 

If folk jazz did not exist already, surely Sabin Todorov can be 

considered as its inventor.

• Saxkartel 

Jazz in an unusual style without bass and drums. These four 

saxophone players may look like a chamber music ensemble 

but they are all about jazz. Groove, swing and improvisation are 

the key words for Saxkartel. Allow Kurt Vanherck, Sara Meyer, 

Frank Vaganée and Tom Vandyck to spice up your evening. 

• Ben Sluijs 

An intimate solo performance by Belgian saxophone player, 

Ben Sluijs. 

• Thibault Dille 

Young Thibault Dille started playing the accordeon when he 

was eight. Nowadays he is still adicted to his instrument, 

exploring new ways to play and perform in a jazz setting.

• Trio Florizoone-Massot-Horbaczewski 

When they started to play as a duo, Tuur Florizoone and Michel 

Massot soon discovered that accordion and tuba have a lot 

in common. Both instruments have a beautiful sound color 

and a particularly broad register. Together with cellist Marine 

Horbaczewski, Florizoone and Massot form a trio. During their 

improvisations, the three musicians get the most fascinating 

and moving sounds out of their instruments.

• Buurman 

They released their first album “Rocky komt altijd terug”in 

2008 and Buurman is the upcoming band of the moment in 

the Dutch music scene. Singer, Geert Versnick’s poetic lyrics 

blend smoothly with the music of his band. This is an intimate 

showcase presenting songs from their debut album. 

• Confuse The Cat 

Belgian Rock with strong British influences. New Order, 

Interpol and Joy Division are clearly the inspiration for this 

promising band. 

• It’s a G.A.S 

Paul Michiels goes intimate in “It’s a G.A.S.”. G.A.S. stands 

for Great American Songbook, the famous collection of jazz 

standards on which Paul Michiels has based the programme 

for this concert. Pianist, Jeroen D’hoe accompanies the singer 

on this musical journey. 

• Diablo Blvd 

Strong guitars, pounding drums and stand-up comedian, Alex 

Agnew as lead singer : those are the ingredients that blend 

together in Diablo Blvd Pure metallic rock, Led Zeppelin style.

• Douglas Firs 

Young singer-songwriter Gertjan Vanhellemont a.k.a. Douglas 

Firs performs intimate songs. Just a guitar and a beautiful 

voice. 

• Drive like Maria 

This Belgian - Dutch trio produces a solid rock sound, 

comparable to Queens of the Stone Age and Led Zeppelin. 

Unusually however Drive Like Maria has a female bass player 

and a singing drummer. 

• Nice View Over Trinidad 

Young pop talent. Nice View Over Trinidad has a strong rock 

sound, influenced by Queens of the Stone Age, The Stooges, 

and Sonic Youth.

No Mo Trevno 

• Bastard Nation 

Bastard Nation joins the guitar talents of Carlos Dyckmans and 

the exceptional vocals of Joy Adegoke, the next Macy Gray. A 

rootsy, dreamy sound. 

• De Fase 

Anna Vercammen and Joeri Cnapelinckx produce their very 

own sound as De Fase. A delightful combination of Dutch 

lyrics, humour and a whole range of instruments including a 

melodica, a glockenspiel and a xylophone. 

• Guy Van Sande 

Guy Van Sande sings Bob Dylan... in Dutch. In this acoustic 

performance, the actor searches through the Dylan oeuvre, 

together with musician, Wim Van Deuren. Clearly the two of 

them are massive Dylan fans.

• Hotel Amigo 

Lead singer, Jenne Decleir offers the musical equivalent of a 

shaken cocktail on the rocks. Lots of reggae, ska, latin, mambo 

and of course some rock’n roll! 

• Kiss of Life 

Myriam G.S. Mestiaen brings a mixture of soul, blues and pop 

in her musical project, Kiss Of Life. The press has compared 

her to Tori Amos and Kate Bush so you can definitely expect 

some female power on the Eurocam Media Center stage. 

• Lalalover 

Tom Kestens started his career in music as a member of 

Belgian pop band, Das Pop. Later on, he created his own 

musical universe as Lalalover, producing a heart-warming, 

soulful sound. The Flemish equivalent of Prince, live in the 

Eurocam Media Center studios. 

• Lick My Click 

Three men and one charismatic front lady. A mixture of 

Goldfrapp and Vive La Fête. Electronics with a female touch. 

• Malibu Stacey 

Their name was inspired by an episode of “The Simpsons”. 

Indie pop, brought with an infectious dose of enthusiasm, 

Malibu Stacey counts as one of Wallonia’s most talented 

young bands.

• Maximum Basie 

Maximum Basie plays soul and the blues, characterised by the 

husky voice of front woman, Judith Okon. 

• Miller 

When he was five , he started his musical career as a drummer 

on empty ice-cream boxes, pots and pans.Now though Miller 

has matured into a singer-songwriter who brings a rich and 

unique sound with his harmonic falsetto voice, an electroacoustic 

guitar and seven accompanying musicians. 

• Monkey C 

Monkey C is a bunch of happy go lucky friends making music. 

Their music is poppy and festive. The funky tunes and the 

sing along refrains will remain long after they have finished 

performing as they strive to create a summer that never ends. 

• Monkey Driven 

Before going solo, these musicians played with other bands 

such as Sukilove, Styrofoam and Mira. Monkey Driven 

performs its very own solid rock. 

• The Nico Van Gendt Project 

This promising band from Sint-Niklaas started out as a project 

at the Antwerp Jazz Studio. The key figure is drummer, Nico 

Van Gendt, but it’s mostly the singer, Kimberly Dhondt who 

grabs the attention with her beautiful, warm and soulful voice. 

• The Remedy 

Anne Van Hoorick and Steven Hendrickx put their musical 

talent into one melting pot and became The Remedy. The 

group’s name finds its origin in a little bar in their hometown 

where they discussed their plans for the first time. With piano 

and guitar they bring serene pop songs in English. 

• Saule 

Saule’s real name is Baptiste Lallieu, a young and very talented 

singer-songwriter based in Brussels. Here he performs some 

of his songs with his band, Les Pleureurs. Enjoy the poetic and 

somewhat melancholic set.

• Starfucker 

In 2005 Starfucker was born. This Belgian version of Foo 

Fighters consists of four young artists determined to conquer 

the Belgian rock scene. Their single “Boys will be boys” was 

a big hit on the radio and suggests a promising future for the 

band. 

• Steak Number Eight 

The winners of Humo’s influential 2008 Rock Rally. Former 

winners of the competition include dEUS and Novastar and 

hence although Steak Number Eight are only 15 years old they 

are already on the road to success. Just days before this huge 

accolade EXQI Pop invited these talented youngsters into our 

studios to record a very special concert. They quickly proved 

that they were born to be on the stage so tune in and get 

blown away by the edgy guitar sound of Steak Number Eight. 

• Suck on This 

This cover band from The Netherlands has a penchant for 

genuine rock performing numbers from U2 to Coldplay to 

Clouseau and Rowwen Hèze. 

• Work 

Based in Brussels, the band describes its music as “intense 

urban blues”. Work produce Tom Waits-inspired indie blues 

with an alternative and layered sound. Ivo Sans, Bert Dockx 

and Frederic Jacques take their inspiration from a multitude 

of genres and rock, jazz and roots influences sparkle in their 

songs.

FREAKY AGE, 2010 

Now playing in the UK, the members of Freaky Age 

are only 19 but they have already produced 3 albums 

with catchy choruses and a hard hitting guitar sound. 

A cross between The Strokes and the Arctic Monkeys, 

they have already topped the Belgium charts with 

Where do you go now? and are ready to perform at 

some of the biggest European summer festivals.

GUIDO BELCANTO, 2008 

Flemish singer-songwriter, Guido Belcanto presents 

his new album : “Ik zou mijn hart willen weggeven.” 

“The new Guido Belcanto has arrived”, announced 

the record label about this new album. The theme of 

the songs is still the same - Guido Belcanto sings his 

pain of love and the search of romance as no other – 

but the musical framework sounds different. These are 

chansons in a rock’n’roll coat with blues sleeves and a 

country lining.

As the son of legendary singer, Louis Neefs, Günther 

was always destined to follow in his father’s footsteps. 

Hence it is no surprise that since the early nineties, 

Günther Neefs has built up an impressive repertoire 

of his very own mix of soft jazz, pop, soul, funk and 

big band sounds. This concert launched his brand new 

album. “My Soul” which pays tribute to the glory days 

of the soul music label Motown. 




HADISE, 2010

Sassy, sultry and sexy. Hadise has already produced 

4 albums and is TMF Award Winning in Belgium and 

Golden Butterfly Award Winning in Turkey. In 2009 she 

represented Turkey coming fourth in the Eurovision 

Song Contest and her Turkish origins are evident in 

songs like the Dum Tek Tek. However her “Jennifer 

Lopez” R&B sound has also helped her to a chart 

topping solo career. 




ISBELLS, 2010 

Thoughtful, reflective and beautiful. The former 

drummer turned front man, Gaetan Vandewoude has 

the voice of an angel. This is music that washes over 

you bringing alternately waves of hope and melancholy. 

Sometimes erring towards Pop and sometimes more

JEAN MICHEL JARRE : LIvE FROM THE 

FORBIDDEN CITY AND TIANANMEN 

SqUARE IN BEIJING, 2004 

Jean Michel Jarre was a pioneer of electronic music 

and even today he continues to be at the forefront of 

sound evolution. Form lasers in Tian’anmen Square to 

immense screens carrying ecological messages in the 

Sahara desert to animations in Teo and Tea and the 

3D effects in Oxygene 30 years on. These are concerts 

that constantly break down borders and re-define the 

pop concert. 

Beijing has never seen anything like this. Jean Michel 

Jarre first played in China in 1981, becoming one of

the first western musicians to be given permission to 

perform in the country. Jarre opened the concert with 

a collaboration with soloist Cheng Lin who played her 

erhu - a traditional Chinese stringed instrument. He 

treated the crowd in central Beijing to his signature 

synthesized music set against a laser light show. 

Images and colours were projected onto huge inflated 

white cylinders, cones and spheres over Tiananmen 

Square.

SHIPYARDS IN GDANSK, 2005. 

Jean Michel Jarre relives the revolution in his music. 

To celebrate the 25th anniversary of Lech Walesca’s 

Solidarity movement, Jean Michel Jarre performed 

an energetic concert in Gdansk, northern Poland. 

The backdrop was the shipyard where workers went 

on strike in August 1980 leading to the eventual fall of 

communism in Poland. The setting includes a moving 

crane lit from the inside, and the hanger door opening 

to reveal an orchestra surrounded by sparks from metal 

welding.

Jean-Michel Jarre performs in the breathtaking 

“moving” sand dunes of Merzouga. 

The Water For Life concert took place on the 16th 

December 2006 in the Sahara, close to Merzouga. Jean 

Michel Jarre performed exclusively in the middle of the 

desert with the Symphonic Orchestra of Rabat and local 

musicians to highlight the problems of water supply in 

the world. Now you can re-live the desert atmosphere, 

absorb the amazing sound and indulge in the images of 

the off-piste desert with its sugar-soft dunes.

SHOWCASE, 2007 

As a pioneer of electronic music, Jean Michel Jarre 

continues to be at the forefront of sound evolution. He 

showcased his new CD and DVD on the 28th of March 

at the Eurocam Media Center in Lint. The show kicked 

off with a press conference followed by an exclusive 

premiere of his new CD “Téo & Téa”. The images were 

beamed into Warner divisions all over Europe where 

local press groups were able to enjoy his music as well 

as participate in an interactive Q&A session with Jean-

ROWWEN HèZE, 2008 

During the last twenty years, Rowwen Hèze has become 

one of the most popular bands in The Netherlands. 

Singing in their own dialect, they’ve created songs that 

are now classics, such as “Bestel mar” and “Limburg”, 

an ode to their home region. Rowwen Hèze even rose 

to fame in the Belgian folk scene. For their theatre tour 

“Saus” they invited six guest musicians. It’s a show 

filled with exuberant songs and melancholic ballads, 

describing daily life in a funny yet recognizable way.

Wagner himself conducted the premiere of this opera 

at the Semper Oper in Dresden, 1843 and it’s a 

good example of his attempts to break with tradition 

moving away from conventional opera and towards 

music drama. Wagner claimed that it was partly 

autobiographical following a stormy sea crossing he 

undertook but whether that is true or not the haunting 

plot is also based on the legend of a Dutch sea captain, 

condemned to sail on distant seas until judgement 

day. His only salvation will be the true love of a faithful 

woman.

PIMPINONE, OPERA BY GEORG FRIERICH 

TELEMANN, 2009 

Opera in a restaurant? It’s possible! Jamie Oliver’s 

Restaurant “Fifteen” was the special setting for the comic 

opera Pimpinone, performed by the Combattimento 

Consort Amsterdam. The story of the smart housemaid 

who manages to get her rich but dumb employer to 

marry her, was immensely popular when Telemann,

who at that time worked at the Hamburg Opera House, 

decided to use the plot for one of his own compositions. 

The result is this successful comic opera “Pimpinone”. 

Culinary and musical enjoyment go hand in hand, with 

the audience eating during the performance.

The Québecois, Robert Lepage has forged a reputation 

as one of the most visionary theatre directors of our 

age, a man with an extravagant flair for what the French 

call a “grand spectacle”. He staged Stravinsky’s only 

full-length opera, The Rake’s Progress, in La Monnaie. 

Lepage updated the story about hedonist Tom Rakewell 

and moved it from 18th century London to Las Vegas 

in the fifties.

Giuditta, Lehár’s last stage work is generally viewed 

as his finest, greater even than his most popular, 

The Merry Widow. The story concerns the beautiful 

but married Giuditta who takes up with the attractive 

army captain Octavio in North Africa, only to endure a 

breakup in their relationship when he is transferred and

efuses to desert. Giuditta then becomes a dancer in 

a nightclub and Octavio does finally desert, but when 

a reconciliation years later fails, the story ends sadly, 

though not quite tragically. With slightly darker music 

and a more grimly powerful ending, the work might 

have become a full-fledged opera in spite of its plentiful 

dialogue.

YvONNE PRINCESSE DE BOURGOGNE, 2010 

A tragic-comic opera in 4 acts by Philippe Boesmans. 

The unappealing, practically mute, Princesse Yvonne 

returns to the Kingdom of Bourgogne where Prince 

Philippe says he will marry her. However her presence 

at court undermines the social order and creates 

insecurities. The king is reminded of a fatal incident 

with a young mistress; the queen becomes paranoid 

that her secret poems have been revealed. Their son, 

Philippe first courts Yvonne before casting her aside. 

All callously agree she must be disposed of to restore 

the status quo. Yvonne, not only ugly but greedy too, 

chokes to death after being fed un-boned fish. 

Dörte Lyssewski gives a remarkable performance as 

Yvonne and by the end of the opera the audience is left 

wondering who is the more normal: her or the ridiculous 

track suit wearing King and his entourage who can only 

laugh at her and plot to kill her. Yann Beruon as the 

Prince is a role model for any tenor wishing to sing in 

French.

BACKSTAGE AT SEMELE, 2009 

East meets West culture clash. Internationally acclaimed 

artist, Zhang Huan directs Handel’s baroque opera. 

An 18 tonne ancient Chinese temple was lovingly 

disassembled and transported around the world to 

become the on stage set. Not only does it have to be 

rebuilt in a small 19 century European opera house but 

there are also language and cultural barriers to overcome 

in order to ensure a successful performance.

DON CARLOS AUTO DA FE, 2010 

Behind the scenes at the Flemish Opera. 

In a pioneering production for the Wiener Staatsoper, 

the leading contemporary opera director, Peter 

Konwitschny staged the original five acts, French 

version of Don Carlos once again. Now he brings it to 

Belgium. Rather than allowing the audience to simply 

enjoy a drink during the interval, Konwitschny decided 

to present the Auto Da Fe where heretics are taken to 

be burnt. The historical and contemporary combine 

in this challenging scene as a Live TV broadcast 

(complete with presenters and TV screens) demands 

direct audience inter action.

THE MAN AND THE MUSIC, 2009 

Philippe Herreweghe is an admirer of Bach and devoted 

a great part of his musical career to the authentic 

execution of baroque music. He is also the man behind 

the Royal Flemish Philharmonic. EXQI Culture was 

lucky enough to record an access all areas portrait of 

this renowned Flemish conductor. Find out how he gets 

the best performance from his orchestra and what he 

does just before going on stage. 



JAAP vAN ZWEDEN WITH THE ROYAL 

FLEMISH PHILHARMONIC: 

PORTRAIT OF A CONDUCTOR, 2008 

Nowadays he is Chief Conductor at The Royal Flemish 

Philharmonic, but Jaap van Zweden has an impressive 

international curriculum. He shared the stage with highly 

acclaimed orchestras, including the Orchestre National 

de France, the London Philharmonic, the St Petersburg 

Philharmonic, the Academy of St. Martin-in-the-fields 

and the Concertgebouworkest. EXQI Culture was given 

the opportunity to follow van Zweden’s resulting in this 

fascinating documentary.

JOSEPH HAYDN UNvEILED, 2009 

DOCUMENTARY 

Haydn lived at a time of significant musical evolution. 

During his childhood, baroque traditions prevailed, 

while the classical style was questioned by Beethoven 

at the end of his life. Joseph Haydn Unveiled is a 

documentary showing Haydn as a brilliant composer, 

but also in his private life. Moreover, the documentary 

shows fragments from his master works, such as 

Armida, Die Schöpfung and Die Jahreszeiten.

MASTERWORKS 2009: BELA BARTOK 

“CONCERTO FOR ORCHESTRA” 

Normally a conventional concerto features a solo 

instrument with orchestral accompaniment. However 

Bartók said that he called the piece a concerto rather 

than a symphony because of the way each section of 

instruments is treated in a soloistic and virtuosic way. 

In a unique approach to classical performance, the 

programme presents a mix of documentary footage

explaining the man and the music followed by the 

orchestra playing live examples. 

Bartok had fled his beloved Hungary in the face of Nazi 

invasion yet the American public had not responded 

well to his early work. Ill and losing weight he was finally 

commissioned to write a piece for orchestra which he 

completed in 1943. Despite his personal situation and 

ill health, despite being miles away from his beloved 

homeland the overall theme is still one of Hope in the 

time of War. 





TOOTS THIELEMANS : A JAZZ LEGEND, 

2008 

This is the incredible journey from the Marolles in 

Brussels to the biggest clubs in New York. With archive 

footage of his mother Paul Simon, Billy Joel, Herbie 

Hancock and Kenny Werner. This is the fantastic journey 

of one of the best loved musicians of all time.

shows. For 10 years he was the mastermind behind 

the success story that is “Cirque de Soleil”. This is the 

access all areas documentary following the creation 

of his latest masterpiece from conceptual idea to the 

premiere in Macau, China. 

It offers an exceptional insight into the genius of its 

creator and reveals the secret of just how to create a 

phenomenon. An enormous swimming pool as a set. A 

massive boat that rises and sinks. Gymnasts that have 

to learn to be high divers. High divers that have to learn 

to act. Actors that have to learn to swim. This show redefines 

the limits of the live stage show. For a year and 

a half cameras followed the 120 strong international 

team as they demonstrated breathtaking imagination, 

dedication and creativity.

Crop Circus 

Five artists from three countries (Switzerland, France 

and Belgium). These five widely differing personalities 

each bringing their own special skills unite to form Crop 

Circus. Mixing theatre, acrobatics, dance and music

GYPSY LOvE STORY 

“Gypsy Love Story” is a Hungarian operetta about a 

classic love story. Julia is the daughter of a wealthy 

baron. She falls in love with the poor gypsy musician 

Janos. An impossible love or so it seems...

Tenor Jorge Castro perfomes his favorite songs in 

some very good company : Anita Meyer, Petra Berger, 

Sandra Kim, Roxeanne Hazes, Emilia Castro and Anahi 

Castro maken hun opwachting. The Golden Memory 

Orchestra accompagnies them, and the dancers of the 

Holland Show Ballet make it a spectacular show. 



ROBERT GROSLOT FILM : “SI LE MONDE…”, 

2008 

You probably know him as the conductor of Il 

Novecento, the orchestra that accompanies the artists 

at the annual Night of the Proms. But Robert Groslot is 

not only a conductor. He is also a composer, graphic 

designer and film maker. Inspired by the sentence “Si le 

monde était clair, l’art ne serait pas” from the oeuvre of 

Albert Camus, he releases his second film project. “Si

le monde…” it is an art film for which Groslot created 

graphic paintings and a musical score. A multi-media 

symphonic artwork, exclusively in avant-premiere on 

EXQI Culture.

Authentic Basque music mingles with incredible film 

archive. This artistic project traces the story of children 

forced to flee Spain during the Spanish Civil War and 

seek refuge in Belgium. Seventy years later this music 

especially composed by Dick van der Harst tells their 

story helped by visuals created by inspired and award

winning film director, Fabio Wuytack. A unique and 

compelling multi media project.
