10 2014 Highlights and 2015 Key Targets 2014 Highlights In 2014, there was a continued focus on sustainability performance, which has ensured that Kingspan Insulation has continued to progress, most notably in the area of Energy and Greenhouse Gas Emissions. The following summarises the key performance highlights for 2014. Economic Viability Despite the continuing uncertainties in the wider economy, Kingspan Insulation showed a robust performance in 2014 driven by a combination of positive residential and non-residential construction, and continued market penetration of Kooltherm. Full scale production of OPTIM-R, a next generation insulation, began in 2014 at the new manufacturing line at the Pembridge site and specifications for this ultra-thin solution continued to grow through 2014. Energy and Greenhouse Gas Emissions As part of Kingspan Group’s Zero Net Energy by 2020 target, work has continued in both Pembridge and Selby to develop renewable energy infrastructure and carrying out energy saving measures. An anaerobic digester was brought online at Pembridge, producing heat and energy. 2014 also saw the opening of the PV array at the Selby site ensuring that both sites are moving closer to the Net Zero target, which Kingspan Insulation aim to achieve by 2018. The Pembridge site also gained certification to the ISO 50001 standard in 2014. The voluntary standard provides a best practice framework for integrating energy performance improvements into all aspects of management practices. Product Design & Material Input The introduction of a new polyol for PIR products to the Selby site has increased the proportional of renewable materials within the PIR product. Research work is continuing into renewable alternatives for input materials. Investment has continued into developing thinner insulation products in response to market demands. Raw Material & Manufacturing Efficiency A focus on continuous improvement in manufacturing efficiency has been sustained throughout 2014, with production line waste being a particular target. Ebbw Fawr, a new secondary school achieved a BREEAM ‘Excellent’ rating with the help of products from Kingspan Insulation including Kingspan Thermaroof TT46 LPC/FM and TR26 LPC/FM as well as the Kingspan Insulation Waste Take back scheme.
11 2015 Key Targets Energy and Greenhouse Gas Emissions During 2015 work will continue to focus on initiatives that contribute towards the 2018 net zero energy target. The AD plant will move into full use. Raw Material Use & Manufacturing Efficiency The focus on continuous improvement will continue in 2015, with the aim of achieving World Class Operations Management (WCOM) Gold in Pembridge in 2015 and across all sites by 2018. A particular emphasis will be placed on improvements in the manufacturing process. Biodiversity and Land Management In 2015 Kingspan Insulation aims to repeat the biodiversity study carried out on the Pembridge site. Sustainability Reporting Investigations into the requirements for GRI4 reporting will take place in 2015, and an assessment as to the feasibility of moving this report to this level in the future. Kingspan Insulation’s third manufacturing site, at Basildon, Essex, is currently outside the scope of this report due to a much lower baseline of sustainability reporting. During 2015 planning will take place to develop the sustainability reporting systems at this location. Kingspan Insulation’s structural insulated panel system continues to deliver a high level of fabric performance on all projects.
