spe<strong>ed</strong>.<br />

Reliability Criteria. The overall system reliability depends upon the location<br />

of the torsional natural frequencies with regard to the potential excitation<br />

frequencies. An interference diagram generat<strong>ed</strong> for each system<br />

helps to identify coincidences between expect<strong>ed</strong> excitation frequencies<br />

<strong>and</strong> torsional natural frequencies within the operating spe<strong>ed</strong> range.<br />

Whenever practical, the coupling torsional stiffness <strong>and</strong> inertia properties<br />

should be select<strong>ed</strong> to avoid any interferences within the desir<strong>ed</strong> spe<strong>ed</strong><br />

range. If resonances cannot be avoid<strong>ed</strong>, coupling selection can be optimiz<strong>ed</strong><br />

bas<strong>ed</strong> on torsional shaft stress calculations as well as location of<br />

critical spe<strong>ed</strong>s.<br />

When coupling changes are implement<strong>ed</strong> that have different weights<br />

than the vendor originally specifi<strong>ed</strong>, the lateral critical spe<strong>ed</strong>s may be<br />

affect<strong>ed</strong>. Generally, heavier couplings lower the lateral critical spe<strong>ed</strong>s,<br />

while lighter couplings raise them. The lateral critical spe<strong>ed</strong>s should be<br />

review<strong>ed</strong> to evaluate the possibility of operating near a lateral response<br />

that could result in high radial vibrations.<br />

The acceptability of the torsional system is determin<strong>ed</strong> by comparison<br />

to typical engineering criteria. Common criteria us<strong>ed</strong> for industrial machinery<br />

(API St<strong>and</strong>ards) recommend separation of the torsional critical
