should be us<strong>ed</strong> for relative comparisons; the actual value will be less.<br />

The calculation of shaft deflection for a horizontal multi-stage pump is<br />

complicat<strong>ed</strong> by the fact that the distribut<strong>ed</strong> weight of the shaft as well as<br />

the concentrat<strong>ed</strong> weight of the impellers must be account<strong>ed</strong> for. A<br />

method of approximating the shaft deflection can be found in Stepanoff.<br />

Key Stress<br />

A simple but important part of shaft design is calculating key stress. In<br />

most centrifugal pumps, driver torque is transmitt<strong>ed</strong> across the major<br />
