For larger pumps or when h<strong>and</strong>ling hot or cold liquids, the following design<br />

practices are recommend<strong>ed</strong>:<br />

• The bowl joints should be flang<strong>ed</strong> <strong>and</strong> bolt<strong>ed</strong>. Gaskets, when requir<strong>ed</strong>,<br />

should be of the "O"-ring type, so that joints are made up metal to<br />

metal, <strong>and</strong> pump alignment therefore maintain<strong>ed</strong>.<br />

• The impellers should be mount<strong>ed</strong> on the shaft with key drives <strong>and</strong> secur<strong>ed</strong><br />

axially with split rings <strong>and</strong> thrust collars.<br />

• When selecting clos<strong>ed</strong> vs. semi-open impellers, the following must be<br />

not<strong>ed</strong>:<br />

• Clos<strong>ed</strong> impellers should always be us<strong>ed</strong> for h<strong>and</strong>ling hot or cryogenic<br />

liquids.<br />

• Clos<strong>ed</strong> impellers exhibit lower downthrust when in the axially unbalanc<strong>ed</strong><br />

configuration.<br />

• Clos<strong>ed</strong> impellers are easier to assemble for large pumps with more<br />

than three stages.<br />

• Semi-open impellers are more efficient due to elimination of disc<br />

friction from the front shroud.<br />

• Efficiency loss due to wear on the semi-open impeller vanes can be<br />

regain<strong>ed</strong> by adjusting the impeller setting at the adjustable pump to<br />

driver coupling, typically in increments of 0.016 inch.<br />

• When semi-open impellers are axially balanc<strong>ed</strong> to r<strong>ed</strong>uce axial<br />

thrust, downthrust can be maintain<strong>ed</strong> over the full operating range.<br />

This prevents shaft whip from upthrust with associat<strong>ed</strong> bearing wear.<br />

• Semi-open impellers can readily be hardsurfac<strong>ed</strong> for erosion protection.<br />

• Semi-open impellers are less likely to seize when h<strong>and</strong>ling s<strong>and</strong> or<br />

foreign material.
