What are young teens wearing today?
Comfortable clothes are important, but
so are bright colours like orange and
red, especially for girls. Boys prefer
darker colours, or light greens and
browns. Shorts, jeans and T-shirts are
popular, but a new fashion for boys is
to wear two shirts at the same time.
Boys also like wearing big clothes, two or
three sizes larger than they need. 16-
year-old Brian Barnhart says, ’People
look at me because my clothes are so
big.’
Today’s fashions include many ideas and
styles which were popular in the 1970s
and 1980s. Shop assistant Clare Carter
says that parents of teenagers often
come into the shop with their children
and say, ’I made a mistake. I didn’t
keep my old clothes from the 1970s. My
children want them now.’ Teen fashions
are becoming more expensive every day
Thanks very much for the birthday card. I had a new
my party on Wednesday. I had to get up early the next
Who thinks today’s teenagers are worse
than their parents’ generation? A
survey for a British magazine has some
good news for mums and dads: their
children actually want to help in the house
and like doing housework! The magazine
spoke to 350 teenagers aged between 13 and
16. More than 200 said they ’often’ helped
in the house. 85% said they always made
their own bed. The most popular activities
included washing the car, helping in the
garden, and doing the washing-up. Last on
the list was doing the ironing (3%). Nearly
a quarter said they sometimes helped do the
cooking. Most identified cleaning their
rooms as very important because ’parents
get angry when rooms are untidy’.
The survey found a difference between
teenagers in the north and south of the
country. Teenagers in the north said they
usually help their parents more than four
times a week. In the south, it was only two
or three times a week.
GIRL 2 Yes, here it is.
GIRL 1 What have we got on Mondays?
GIRL 2 Well, we’ve got assembly at nine
o’clock, then the first lesson is
Good morning, you must be
Emma Harding, the new girl. Is
that right?
Yes.
When did you arrive in
Manchester?
Last Thursday.
Good. I hope everything’s OK.
Yes, thanks.
I’ve got a few questions to ask you.
Right.
Now, where were you born?
I was born in London.
And when were you born?

Answer key
EMMA On the 5th of September 1989.
HEAD The 5th of September 1989.
Good. And where do you live?
EMMA 14 Park Street.
HEAD Thank you, Emma. Your class is
4A ...
EMMA OK...
HEAD And you start lessons tomorrow
at 9.15. Now, have you got any
questions?
EMMA Yes, I wanted to know how I can
get to school from Park Street.
HEAD That’s easy. You take the number
12 bus. The journey takes about
10 minutes. The bus stop is
outside the school.
What have you got there, Vicky?
It’s an invitation for Jack’s party.
That’s nice. When is it?
It’s on June the 1st.
So what’s happening? Are you
all going out for a pizza again?
No, no, the party’s in his garden.
That’s nice. I hope the weather
stays fine.
He’s having a barbecue. I love
barbecues!
And who’s cooking? His mum, I
suppose.
No. Jack is! And his dad’s
helping him.
How many people are going?
About 15, I think.
You must take a present. A book,
perhaps, or a CD.
I know what he wants, Mum. The
new Star Wars video.
I see.
Can you give me the money to
buy it?
Well... OK, yes, I suppose I can.
Unit 4, exercise 8
GEMMA Hi, Paul, are you coming to my
party on Saturday?
PAUL Yes, I am. But how do I get
there from the train station?
GEMMA It isn’t far. You turn left when you
come out of the station.
PAUL Turn left, OK ...
GEMMA Walk along to the traffic lights
near the post office. Cross the
road at the lights and turn right
into Castle Street. Go along
Castle Street. The hospital is on
your right, but go straight on.
PAUL Straight on at the hospital, OK ...
GEMMA Take the second road on the
left. Our house is the big house
opposite the church.
PAUL Mm. OK.
GEMMA It’s about 10 minutes on foot.
PAUL Oh. I don’t like walking. Is there
a bus?
GEMMA
PAUL
No, there isn’t. But you can take
a taxi.
A taxi? No thanks, I’ll walk. See
you on Saturday!
Robin, where do you live?
In Helston.
And where’s that?
It’s in the south-west of
England, in Cornwall.
And is it a town or a village?
It’s a small town.
But you weren’t born there, were
you?
No, I was born in London.
So why did you move?
My father didn’t like it in London.
He wanted a quieter life.
And your mother?
My mother was born in
Cornwall. So she was happy to
go back there.
What about you, Robin? Do you
like living in Helston?
Yes, I do. I’ve got lots of new
friends, and there are lots of
things to do. And it isn’t as
dangerous as London. I can go
anywhere by bike. In London I
went by bus or underground.
So Helston is better than
London?
Oh, I didn’t say that. It’s
healthier and quieter. But I still
like London. It’s more exciting.
Er.... 15, I think.
And what colour would you
like?
Well, my favourite colour is
blue. But I’ve got a blue shirt.
Have you got anything
green?
How about this? It’s one of
the shirts in the sale. It’s only
£12.
Er... it doesn’t look very
fashionable. I want the shirt
for a party.
Oh, I see. Well, what about
this light brown one? It’s very
attractive.
Mmm. I don’t really like
brown.
Or there’s this purple one....
Of course. You can use our
phone.
Unit 7, exercise 7
Good morning, everyone. I’ve got some
more information about our school trip to
France in May. So please listen and take
notes. You can ask questions when I
finish.
We’re leaving on May the 7th, that’s a
Saturday, at 7 o’clock in the morning, by
coach to London. In London we’re taking
the Eurostar train to Paris, and from
Paris we take another train to Orléans,
where our exchange school is. We arrive
at about 6 o’clock in the evening, and the
teachers and students of the school are
meeting us at the station. You are all
staying with a different French family,
and you are coming home on Friday the
14th.
You don’t have to take any special
clothes for the trip, but a French phrase
book is a good idea, and remember you
have to have a valid passport to go to
France. Another thing ... the cost. The
total cost of the trip is £130 per student.
You don’t have to pay this until April, but
you have to bring a deposit of £20 to
school next week. Is that clear? Now,
are there any questions?
Unit 8, exercise 7
MUM Oh, there’s a lot of work to do.
Who can help me?
WILLIAM I’ll help you, Mum. What do you
want me to do?
MUM You can clean the kitchen.
WILLIAM All right. Oh, Mum ...
MUM Yes?
WILLIAM Can I go to Jamie’s for a
sleepover tonight?
MUM You have to do the washing-up
first!
WILLIAM I don’t want to do the washingup.
I don’t like washing-up.
Can’t Dad do it?
MUM He’s in bed. He doesn’t feel
well.
WILLIAM I don’t think Dad is ill. He’s
watching the match on
television. I think he’ll be all
right after the match.
MUM Well, I don’t know. Perhaps Dad
is OK, but I’m getting a
headache.
WILLIAM Shall I get you an aspirin,
Mum?
MUM No. I don’t want an aspirin. I
want some help with the
housework.
