A warm
Welcome
to the Experience Devon 2016 guide.
The county of Devon offers something for all ages, all
year round. In fact, one of the hardest decisions you
will have to make about your trip to this diverse county
is where to go first! In addition to beautiful golden
beaches and stunning scenery, we are blessed with
rustic villages and towns, historic buildings and two
National Parks.
Devon is proud to boast no less than 5 areas of
Outstanding Natural Beauty, a UNESCO Biosphere
Reserve, a UNESCO Geopark, a UNESCO World
Heritage Site and two National Parks. Possibly the
most famous of which is Dartmoor with over 350
square miles to explore.
The famous historic cities of Plymouth, where Sir
Francis Drake set sail to circumnavigate the globe in
1577, and Exeter, where parts of the Roman Wall still
remain, are both full of excitement and entertainment.
Couple this with some superb shopping from main
high street retailers to independent shops and
boutiques, they are a must for the whole family.
The gateway to the English Riviera and the UNESCOstamped
Geopark is Torquay, a place teeming with
maritime history and playing host to a number of
sporting events including the Riviera’s own regatta.
South Devon’s beautiful coast and undulating hills are
backdropped by the dramatic wilderness of Dartmoor,
making it a region of contrasts. Throughout South
Devon, there is an abundance of galleries, music
festivals and alternative lifestyle centres.
North Devon has its own unique character, with the
rugged beauty of Exmoor National Park, a perfect
location for hiking or mountain biking, to golden sand
beaches and excellent surf. It is also home to many
stately homes, with their glorious grounds, through to
the steep cobbled street and deep blue harbour in the
timeless village of Clovelly.
With so much to offer, you’ll be spoilt for choice
wherever you decide to go; however, no trip would be
complete without a traditional Devon Cream Tea and
a healthy debate about whether the jam or clotted
cream goes on first!
ENGLAND. IT HAS WILD OPEN MOORLAND, GRANITE TORS AND WOODED RIVER VALLEYS. AT ITS
EDGE IS A LANDSCAPE OF SMALL FIELDS ENCLOSED BY STONE WALLS AND HEDGE BANKS.
Dartmoor has a rich and varied cultural heritage,
ranging from prehistoric remains, through buildings
and settlements of medieval and later origin, to its
customs and traditions, some, such as the famous
Widecombe Fair, still thriving. All combine to give
Dartmoor a distinctive character and make it a
fascinating place to visit. Dartmoor’s landscape is
among the richest in western Europe in terms of
its archaeological remains. Dartmoor contains the
longest stone row in the world and has the greatest
number of archaeological sites out of all the UK
National Parks.
Dartmoor’s blanket bog, upland oakwood, caves
and mines are among habitats of international
importance.
The National Park operates three Visitor Centres
and these are great starting points to explore the
area. The National Park Visitor Centre in Princetown
has a superb free to enter exhibition area where you
can find out about the Dartmoor story and discover
more about the building’s connection with Conan
Doyle and how he was inspired to write the Hound
of the Baskervilles. Try out the new Sherlock
Holmes interactive display, watch stunning films and
learn about Dartmoor’s myths and legends. Children
can enjoy exploring darkest Dartmoor in the centre’s
spooky cinema.
Dartmoor National Park is a place of contrasts with
something to enable everyone to wind down and
take a break from the daily grind. Whether you
seek a place for quiet contemplation, away from the
hustle and bustle, a great day out with the family,
a gentle stroll, or the thrill of adrenaline sports -
Dartmoor has it all.
The open spaces and sheltered valleys give pleasure
to millions of people every year while Dartmoor’s
small towns, villages and settlements offer individual
shops and a warm welcome
after a great day in the hills.
EXMOOR NATIONAL PARK
Exmoor
National Park
STRADDLING THE BOUNDARY OF SOMERSET AND DEVON,
EXMOOR NATIONAL PARK IS RECOGNISED AS ONE OF
THE FINEST LANDSCAPES IN THE UK.
Whether you are looking for a place to walk,
followed by a drink in a country pub, adrenalin
pumping activities or just somewhere to chill and
admire the views – you’ll find plenty to enjoy in
Exmoor National Park.
Straddling the boundary of Somerset and Devon,
Exmoor National Park is recognised as one of the
finest landscapes in the UK. Its deep wooded
valleys, high cliffs, wide open moorland and clear
streams provide inspiration and enjoyment to both
locals and visitors. The farms and villages that have
developed over hundreds of years combine to
create a rich landscape that belies the National
Park’s relatively small size of 267 square miles
(693 square kms).
Exmoor is also an amazing place to marvel at the
wonders of the night sky and in recognition of its
dark skies and the work that the National Park is
doing to keep them that way, Exmoor was
designated Europe’s first International Dark Sky
Reserve in autumn 2011.
Exmoor National Park supports a fascinating variety
of wildlife including herds of wild red deer and free
living Exmoor ponies, rich lichen communities, rare
fritillary butterflies, bats and other species
uncommon in southern Britain.
Exmoor National Park Authority works with others
to protect the special qualities of the National Park.
It also provides a number of services from planning
and conservation to high quality visitor information
and maintaining Exmoor’s excellent network of
waymarked footpaths and bridleways.
The amazing Lynmouth Pavilion is well worth a visit
and is home to the National Park Centre and the
Devon’s environment has something to offer
throughout the year, indeed many sites are
best visited out of season. Nothing can beat an
exhilarating cliff top walk on a blustery winter’s
day, the vivid autumn colours as you stroll through
woodlands or the activity in the estuaries, teeming
with migrating and wintering birds. Our heaths and
moorlands take on their own unique beauty during
the winter months and the stunning displays of
spring flowers such as wild daffodils and bluebells are
simply breath-taking.
Devon provides endless opportunities for all ages
and abilities to get out and active. Leave the car
at home and use the integrated bus and train
network to access multi-use routes, ideal for safe
and easy walking or cycling. A number of accessible
trails are suitable for families with young children
and pushchairs or the elderly and those who use
wheelchairs. So why not take a week’s holiday to
walk a section of the South West Coast Path or cross
the County from north to south coast along the Two
Moors Way? Or take a day out with a leisurely cycle
ride around the Exe Estuary or for the more active
go mountain biking in the Tamar Valley.
For those who enjoy wildlife Devon has an
abundance and variety that few other parts
of Britain can rival. From wintering avocets to
Dartford Warblers and cirl buntings, even the most
enthusiastic bird watcher will find something to
excite.
Our landscape also tells a fascinating story, don’t
miss the Jurassic Coast in East Devon, Slapton
Ley in the South Hams, the towering cliffs of the
Hartland coastline or the awesome granite tors
strewn across Dartmoor, to see geology in action!
DEVON / SOMERSET BORDER
Exmoor
The
Coastline
Exmoor National Park, partly in North
Devon and partly in Somerset, has
an amazing variety of landscapes
encompassing high cliffs that plunge
down to the sea, gorse and heather
covered moorland, ancient woodlands,
valleys and rivers.

Theo Molenaar www.theomolenaar.nl
The coastline within the National Park stretches for 37 miles and ranks amongst the
most scenic, unspoilt and best protected stretches of coastline in the country. At
the highest point it rises to 1421 feet at Culbone Hill. At Great Hangman near Combe
Martin the cliff plunges 800 feet to the sea below and is the highest sea cliff in
England and Wales.
England’s longest national trail The South West Coast Path starts at Minehead
and passes first of all through the Exmoor section of the coastline on its 630 mile
route to its finish at Poole Harbour. This initial part of the coast path encompasses
some wonderful locations, rising up from Minehead over North Hill with its wild
ponies and heather clad moorland landscape it drops down to the pretty village
of Porlock, then over marshland to Porlock Weir harbour. From there it climbs
again through ancient woodland, passing the small and totally remote church at
Culbone, then along paths winding in and out of wooded valleys interspersed by
breathtaking views when the path climbs to the high ground, only to descend again
to the picturesque village of Lynmouth, scene of a disastrous flood in 1952. This is
linked to the town of Lynton high above by a unique Victorian water powered cliff
railway. The path continues from Lynton passing through the Valley of Rocks with
its wild goats, then climbing and plunging down through deep combes to its final
destination within Exmoor at the village of Combe Martin, with its history of silver
mining and of smuggling in the Bristol Channel. A walk on the coastpath will give
opportunities for nature lovers to see a wide variety of plants and wildlife, and the
elusive red deer can often be seen.
The Yarn Market Hotel in Dunster is an ideal location for its close proximity to the
coastline at Dunster beach and the start of the South West Coast Path at Minehead.
Starting at Easter 2016 the hotel will be running coast path walking breaks in 3
sections, starting with Minehead to Combe Martin, followed by Combe Martin to
Bideford, and the last and challenging stretch from Bideford to Bude. Each walking
holiday is for 5 or 6 nights and includes all meals, guiding and transport to and from
each walk each day, so please contact the hotel for more information.
