Local Care from a Local Company
The team at Home Instead Senior Care in Rochdale is passionate
about providing care to its clients which not only improves the
quality of their lives but those of their families too. The company
specialises in providing care for older people in their own homes.
Commenting on the service, David Bradshaw said, “We are passionate
about providing the highest standard of person-centred care. Our ethos
is simple – treat others as we would wish to be treated ourselves. In
doing this we are improving our clients’ quality of life and helping them
to remain in their own homes, leading an independent life.”
Home Instead clients have a care plan tailored specifically to their own
needs and the service is extremely flexible and ranges from help a few
hours a day to 24 hour care. Services can include personal care such as
assistance with bathing, dressing and medications; home help covering
housework, shopping, meal preparation and household duties; and
companionship services that can involve everything from escorting clients
on visits or appointments to simple conversation and good company.
The company also provides a range of specialist services, which include
Alzheimer’s and dementia care, convalescence care and respite care.
Home Instead Caregivers complete a training programme designed by
national and international renowned dementia and Alzheimer's experts.
This means our Caregivers are provided with the latest in Alzheimer's
education and home care techniques, so clients are assured their loved
one is being cared for by a trusted professional.
The team at Home Instead knows that quality care cannot be delivered
in short, rushed visits so care calls are of a minimum 1 hour duration.
They also understand how important it is for clients to have the right
caregiver for their needs. Time is taken to
carefully match caregivers to clients so that they share common areas
of interest and can form an immediate bond.
Home Instead only employs the most caring, considerate and empathetic
caregivers – people to whom making a difference to the lives of others
is important. Caregivers are carefully selected, are CRB checked and
have to provide six references.
Home Instead Senior Care is committed to making a difference,
and regard it as a special privilege to look after people with love,
care and compassion - they take their responsibilities very
seriously indeed.
So, what actually is a Travel Counsellor?
It’s something I get asked quite a lot
because the job title is unusual. In a
nutshell, I’m an independent travel
agent. However, as with most jobs, it
isn’t so clear cut.
Travel Counsellors is a global company. This
gives me access to two things: the
knowledge of 1300 Travel Counsellors
worldwide, and their 24/7 UK-based duty
office. The duty office work round the clock
to make sure I’m up-to-date with any
situations developing around the world, so if
any of your bookings are in trouble I’ll be able
to make alternative plans to ensure your safe
return.
Although the company I’m part of is large, I’m
also independent. This means I can book
with a huge number of suppliers and
package up the perfect, bespoke trip that is
tailored completely to your tastes and
budget. The holiday is for you, so every
aspect is selected with you in mind.
This independence means I can offer a wide
variety of travel.
For example, I could book your classic
‘bucket and spade’ holiday for you in the
summer, then later in the year you’d like 2
nights in The Lakes. By the time you’ve dealt
with Christmas, you fancy a cruise
somewhere sunny, then you remember you
said you’d help organise a friend’s Hen Do to
the races. I can arrange all of these and
more. I can organise weddings abroad and
work with companies to sort their travel
arrangements too, including schools.
Ultimately, what I provide is a simple, hasslefree
way of booking your perfect holiday. It’s
great customer service, it’s having one point
of contact so you’re not passed from agent
to agent, it’s the peace of mind knowing that
when you get to the airport you’ll already be
checked in. And should you have any
problems I’m only a phone call away. Oh, and
everything is 100% financially protected.
Please don’t hesitate to contact me with any
questions or enquiries.
TURIN SHROUD EXHIBITION COMING
TO ROCHDALE
Everyone loves a good mystery. The Loch Ness
Monster, the Bermuda Triangle and the Mary
Celeste are just three but among the longest
lasting and most baffling puzzles is the Turin
Shroud. This has divided experts for centuries
and still there is no definitive view.
For those who
have never
heard of it,
the Shroud
of Turin is a
strip of
linen cloth
about 12 feet long
which is held in Turin Cathedral and very rarely seen
in public. The last occasion was when the current
Pope was given access to the relic during a visit
to the city last year (2015).
So what is so special about it? The Shroud
carries an image of a man of middle-eastern
appearance, both front and back. He is about
six-feet tall and has long hair, typical of men
in biblical times. There are what appear to
be blood stains and wounds in hands, feet
and side which coincide with the accounts of Jesus
Christ’s death as described in the Gospels. A few singe
marks and minor repairs are also in evidence. The
image is like a photographic negative.
Many experts believe that this is the actual burial
shroud of Jesus Christ in which he was wrapped after
being taken down from the cross, laid in a tomb and
then rose again on Easter Day – the foundation of
Christianity.
Equally there are experts who discount this theory but
one thing that puzzles them all is how the image
came to be on the cloth. Photography was unknown
but the image is anatomically correct. How was it
imprinted on the cloth?
Surprisingly carbon dating has been allowed only on
strands of cloth used to repair the Shroud, probably
in the middle ages but no one has been allowed to
remove strands from the original material to test its
authenticity.
Now people of all faiths (and none) in Rochdale will
have the opportunity to see a full-size replica (one of
only six in the world) in an exhibition which will be in
Saint George’s Church,, Oakenrod in April 2016. This
display which has been toured internationally will be
on show for several days in the church together with
a large exhibition and other artefacts detailing life in
the time of Christ, his torture and crucifixion.
The Turin Shroud
Exhibition, which
is entirely free,
will be in the
church from Friday
22nd April until at
least Monday 25th,
but these dates may be
extended due to demand.
So put it in your diary now and come to see one of
the world’s greatest mysteries which has confounded
the experts for many centuries – and still does!
delighted to have secured the rights to the North West premiere of the
A Tale of Two Cities the musical is based on Dickens's classic story of two men in love with
the same woman, two cities swept up in revolution and one last chance for a man to redeem
his wasted life and change the world.
This musical was described by The
Connecticut Post as, 'A Broadway must see,
everything is here to stir the soul - young
love, purity, vengeance, villainy, valour - all
played out against that historic revolution.'
RMTC hope to do this grand musical justice
as the Company boasts a strong chorus
made up of thirty people, hugely talented
principals, professional scenery and lighting,
lavish costumes and a live orchestra.
The Associated Press described A Tale of Two
Cities the musical as, 'The return to the era of
big blockbusters such as Les Miserables,
Phantom and Miss Saigon'.
RMTC hope that the people of Rochdale and
the North West will come and support their
efforts to bring this blockbuster close to
home and the Company certainly hopes that
this show will become a new favourite for
their audience members.
A Tale of Two Cities the Musical is on at
The Gracie Fields Theatre, Rochdale, from
Wednesday 17th to Saturday 20th
February 2016, 7:15pm nightly with a
Saturday matinee at 2:15pm. Tickets are from £12
and are available from www.ticketsource.co.uk/rochdalemtc or on
Volunteers Clean Up at Parish Hall
Uniformed groups, local business people, Councillors and volunteers came
together to tackle a growing problem at St. Paul’s Church Hall car park on
Black Pits Road in Norden. Over the past few years the shrubs and plants
which surround the car park and building had become so overgrown that
they were extending across pavements, and blocking access paths.
The call to action came from Brownie Group
Leader, Gail Reed who had noticed that the
overgrowth had not only been causing a problem
with access, but also making the car park a hot spot
for antisocial behaviour as the nights have drawn in.
The dozen-strong team of volunteers cut back
brambles and shrubs, uncovering drains, paths and
making the access point park significantly wider and
safer for people using the car park. Armed with a
spades and cutters, and with the support of local
garden maintenance professional, Paul Ellison of
Evergreen Landscapes, there was soon a marked
improvement that was commended on by many
churchgoers using the car park.
Norden Councillor, Peter Winkler who was part of
the team said “This car park had become a dark and
overgrown spot in the village and has been attracting
problems. The cutting back has now made this area a
lot more open and safer. The entrance / exit road is
now totally clear making it much easier and safer for
vehicles and the many people who use the car park
each week, especially children attending uniforms
group sessions.”
The Site is also set to benefit from a new gate at the rear
of the car park thanks to a commitment from the
Rochdale Township in Bloom committee who agreed
funding at their last meeting. It is hoped that this will help
to further secure the site.
A Santa-Clawsome event for
Springhill Hospice
A record number of Santa's dashed and dawdled around Hollingworth Lake for their
annual event on11th December 2015.
Despite the stormy weather the rain clouds cleared and the
puddles dried just in time for Sunday morning’s Springhill
Hospice fundraising event. Last year the Hospice celebrated
the event's 10th birthday with a bumper turnout of 616
Santa's. "Fundraising volunteer Pearl Benbow created this
event in 2005 with 87 Santa's getting involved, over the
year's support for the Santa Dash has grown, with 2014’s
event seeing 400 Father Christmas's take part. When we
counted up the numbers on Sunday morning we were
astounded “said Community Fundraiser Lillie Winterbottom.
Lillie added "It was a fantastic day, so many Santa's, so much
support both from participants, sponsors, volunteers and of
course the team at Hollingworth Lake Visitor's Centre"
"This is the highest number of participants we have ever had
for an event like this, it's testament to the amazing support
the community offers the Hospice. In 2014 400 Santa's
raised £15.5k which keeps the doors
of the Hospice open for two whole
days. This enables our doctors, nurses
and counsellors to offer free of charge
care to the community" said Sarah
Ford, Springhill's Income Services
Manager. "With 616 taking part this
year we can only guess at how much
money will be raised. Any amazing
day, thank you to everyone involved".
If you missed out on last year's event,
make sure you put the Santa Dash or
Dawdle in your diary for 2016. This
will take place again on Sunday 11th
December. Keep an eye on the
website for more information
www.springhill.org.uk. In the
meantime, visit the Hospice's
Facebook page to have a look at all
the amazing photos of the day.
Peter and Paul make
Christmas in the Park
While the festive season was upon us,
local residents have been questioning
why there has never been a Christmas
tree in Norden Jubilee Park as there has
only ever been one at the War
Memorial, on the other side of the
village.
When Paul Ellison, Chairman of Friends of
Norden Jubilee Park found this out, there
was only one option for the Friends group
to act upon and that was to find, install
and light a tree within the park for all the
community to enjoy.
With the help of funding from the Rochdale Township
Office and the full dedicated support of Councillor Peter Winkler,
who took the time out to come down and help, Paul set about
digging and concreting the base in for a 19 foot Christmas tree.
The result was that the residents of Norden Village and surrounding
areas got a beautiful eye catching Christmas tree for all to enjoy.
Your Village Needs You
With such a beautiful countryside on our doorstep, a lot is taken for
granted that it will always stay that way. Greenbooth Road, Doctor
Dam and surrounding areas have all these characteristics, but are
showing signs of deterioration in recent years.
Paul Ellison from Evergreen Landscapes is in the process of setting up an action group to
deal with the recent problems arising by talking to local residents within the area.
When you walk up Greenbooth Road, the first two main issues that you will notice are the
small amount of fly-tipping that is
occurring and also how parts of the
wall have fallen in the river, leaving
large sections exposed. This is a
major safety concern, especially
when a lot of young children walk up
there with families and there is such
a large drop to a flowing river.
Poor drainage and water flows have
also caused some lanes and paths
to wash away, with some trees also
falling victim. With the help of local
Councillors, Peter Winkler and Nigel
Morrell, these issues will be
addressed and the area will
be improved for everyone to
enjoy again.
There are also a lot of hidden
gems within the area which
need highlighting, for
example, the Sword in the
Stone and the Knights Head
carved in stone, which are
just left hidden at present.
Anyone who would like to
become involved, please contact Paul Ellison on
07522398784 or ellison82@hotmail.com.
NORDEN NEIGHBOURHOOD DEVELOPMENT PLAN
At the December meeting of the Norden Forum it was agreed to start the formal process of producing a
neighbourhood development plan for Norden. The plan will cover the whole of the council ward of Norden
which also includes Red Lumb, Caldershaw, Birtle and Ashworth.
The idea of the plan is to set out a vision and a set of proposals from the people of Norden on how the future development of
Norden should look. It covers more than just planning and should include ideas about service provision, developing and
preserving our heritage and countryside, helping local business and enhancing the appearance of the village. If approved, the
Local Authority and Planning Inspectorate will have to take the plan into account.
To start the process we need a group of people representing all ages and all the areas of Norden. It should also include local
businesses, farmers and local organisations. If you are interested in this idea and would like to be involved in whatever way you
can please contact me and a meeting will be arranged to give more information and to start the process.
Petrus People Community
Store Celebrate their
Second Birthday
As we celebrate our 2nd birthday here at the store, it seems like a good time to take
stock of what has been achieved in the last 2 years and to make our customers and
donors more aware of the work of Petrus Community in Rochdale and the
surrounding boroughs.
Petrus People Community Store is a social enterprise created to provide much needed funds towards the ongoing
work of Petrus Community. Petrus have been providing accommodation and support services as well as
essential meals, therapeutic groups, and life skills tutoring for over 40 years in Rochdale borough areas and
now also in Rossendale and Oldham.
What do we do? We sell donated goods that still have life in them and our prices are hard to beat. We sell
anything and everything; including furniture, clothing, electricals, toys, books, music, DVD’s, bric-a-brac and
baby equipment. We have some weird and wonderful items donated even some items that we don’t know the
purpose of! If you are having a clear out of items that are in good condition please call us, we can collect
furniture locally.
At the store we have received great support from a small army of around 85 volunteers! This amazing team
of people have contributed in all aspects of the building maintenance and operation of the store. Rochdale
Rotary Club has proved an indispensable source of support, labour and skills for us. Other volunteers are
drawn from all areas of our community; Petrus service users, customers, donors, work placements, Rochdale
people that want to support a worthy cause.
We operate a free clothing scheme for people that are sleeping rough around our borough and for families in
crisis situations. These are referred by an agency worker such as school worker, health visitor, support worker,
housing officer.
Petrus Community have given the Petrus People store a budget to be used to give some basic essential items
to families in extreme need. So far this has amounted to around £20,000 of furniture being delivered to
people in need around our borough. Please email Claire.jefferies@petrus.org.uk for more information on how
to make a referral.
If you haven’t been to the store yet, you really are missing out. Check out some photos on our
The Springhill Groups for Bereaved Adults;
A new venue for our Middleton Group
We have recently had a change of venue for our Middleton group, which used to meet at Middleton Arena. Now they meet at The
Loft café in Middleton Shopping Centre and we thought that this would be a good opportunity to let local people know more
about the groups. We recognise that loneliness and isolation can be major problems for people who have suffered a significant
bereavement. People often struggle to find ways of creating new friendships and for this reason we decided to facilitate three
social groups in the community which provide a safe, welcoming place for bereaved people to meet with other people in a similar
situation. These groups are based in cafes in Middleton, Rochdale and Heywood and are offering social support. They are simply
a place to meet for a drink and a chat and to find out about what is going on in the local area. The groups are drop-ins, with no
appointment required. The Springhill Groups are hosted by trained volunteers whose work is overseen by the Bereavement
Support Counsellors. The Springhill Groups are suitable for any adult over the age of 18 who is coming to terms with their loss
and bereavement, and beginning to look for ways of creating new friendships. They are not suitable for people who are
struggling with complicated grief or who are in the very early stages of bereavement. Referral to our Bereavement Support
Service at Springhill Hospice may be more appropriate in those circumstances, but please ring to discuss what help we can offer,
on 01706 649920.
The group dates and venues are as follows:
Tuesday 10.30 – 12 midday. The Loft, Middleton Shopping Centre.
Wednesday 10.30 – 12 midday. Tilly’s Tearooms, Heywood.
Thursday 2-3.30pm. The Bean, Library Café, Rochdale
Friends of Jubilee Park go from
Strength to Strength
The last year has seen the Friends of Norden Jubilee Park go from strength to strength. In
the many events we have hosted throughout the year. It is great to hear that everyone looks
forward to the new and exciting events that we organise in the Norden Jubilee Park.
Keep your eyes open on our notice board near the park
Thai Style Mussels
I love mussels but only if really fresh, in season
and nice and plump. I’ve given them an Asian
style makeover which gives them an awesome
kick. Have some hot crusty bread ready at the
end to mop up the juices.
If your in a rush or a bit dodgy with your knife
skills you could always blend up the onion, chilli,
garlic, ginger, fennel and lemon grass in a food
processor instead of chopping everything fine by
hand.
Thai Style Mussels
Serves 2
2 table spoons olive oil
1 small onion – chopped fine
1 red chilli – de-seeded and chopped fine
1 clove garlic – chopped fine
1 knob of fresh root ginger – chopped fine
½ fennel chopped fine
½ lemon grass – chopped fine
Method
1) Heat the olive oil in a large sauce pan. Add the onion, chilli,
garlic, ginger, fennel and lemon grass and sauté for 3-4
minutes until softened.
2) Add the mussels and white wine and cover. Cook over a high
heat for approx 4 minutes shaking the pan frequently until the
mussels open.
3) Transfer the mussels to warmed serving bowls and add the
coconut cream and coriander to the cooking liquor in the pan.
Bring to the boil, season to taste then pour over the mussels
and serve immediately with a squeeze of fresh lime .
1200g mussels
250ml dry white wine
To Finish
50g coconut cream
1 table spoon roughly chopped
coriander
Squeeze fresh lime
Need some help with
technology?
With just a few weeks to go before Rochdale Digital Festival returns, organisers have
revealed more about this year’s event. The festival, aimed at de-mystifying
technology and showing how useful, easy and fun to use it can be, will be staged at
Number One Riverside on Saturday 27 February.
Names already confirmed to be at the festival include Barclays, Google, BBC iPlayer, 02 Rochdale and BT.
They’ll be joined by a host of others including Boots, Rochdale Online and Hopwood Hall College.
Organised by Rochdale Borough Council, in partnership with BBC Radio Manchester, the festival has been
designed to improve people’s digital skills with hands-on help and advice for all age groups. Visitors will be
able to find out how to do online banking, how to browse products, shop or read a book online, and get tips
on using smartphones and tablets.
If you want to know more about how to use technology to find a job, you can visit the Careers and Skills Zone
for expert advice on the digital skills you need to find work in 2016 and beyond. For the first time there will
be a Digital Community and Creative Zone, highlighting local digital projects and how they can help you.
There will also be demonstrations of how residents can use the council website to avoid making unnecessary
and time-consuming telephone calls or face-to-face visits. There will be friendly faces on hand to show how
easy it can be and tablets, phones and computers will be available for people to try.
Councillor Neil Emmott, Cabinet Member for Corporate Services and Neighbourhoods said:
“We’ve really stepped up a gear for 2016 and already have a great line-up of local and national names
joining us. It’s going to be an unmissable day for local residents, helping you do more online, whatever your
level. You’ll be able to find out how to do online banking, how to browse products, shop or read a book online
and get tips on using a smartphone or tablet. There will be friendly faces on hand to show you step by step
just how easy it is, as well as tablets, phones and computers for you to have a go on.”
The festival will bring together a range of exhibitions, performances and workshops and there will also be a
‘help-bar’ where an 02 ‘guru’ and students will help you get the best from your smartphone and tablet.
Rochdale Digital Festival is being held as part of BeOnline 2016 – a national two-week campaign to help
people discover the internet and how it can help them make 2016 a year of transformation.
If you’re already online, find out more about the event at www.rochdale.gov.uk/RDFest16
DO MORE ONLINE: Rochdale Digital Festival is promising all the help you need to get to grips with
technology.
IS BAMFORD AND NORDEN THE BEST PLACE TO BE AN OLDER
PERSON IN THE BOROUGH?
Over the last 6 months Circle has been running an extensive pilot
programme based in the Bamford and Norden area.
The pilot has seen various activities take place ranging from
Health and Wellbeing events to regular Monday morning Tea &
Talk sessions at the popular Red Butterfly Bakery based in
Norden Old Library.
On top of these events the various activities on offer have been
supplemented by Circles busy social calendar.
Mark Wynn, Director at Circle said “we are incredibly proud of
the work we are doing in the Bamford and Norden area. Circle is
making a big positive difference to Older People in the area,
making sure they remain connected and socially active”.
We hope 2016 will see even more people involved, being active,
having fun, meeting new people and making new friends
Circle, the Heywood, Middleton and Rochdale based social
enterprise which has been carrying out a pilot programme in
Bamford and Norden aimed at reducing social isolation and
connecting people to existing support and services.
