New Year Resolution ISSUE 460 CONTENTS At the end of last year Sameway reported on two alleged cases of deception happening in the Melbourne Chinese community which I regarded as our social responsibility as a publication. Somebody queried why I needed to be that serious rather than just to brush off controversies if I wanted to run Sameway as a business appealing to all people. I believed running media is not the same as running a business because of the associated social responsibility to uphold social core values. So we must possess remarkable integrity, independent thinking, and unbiased proposition to speak out the truth. Freedom of speech in Hong Kong has lately become an international point of interest. Five staff of an anti-Communist publishing company were respectively disappeared under different circumstances in different countries one of which seemingly involved illegal arrest inside Hong Kong with freedom of speech. This terrified many Hong Kong people as their possession of freedom would disappear too one day. Not all media are the same. The most important attributes of a media is its public trustworthiness, respect from and influencing power on its audience, to be attained through its long term commitment to improve quality standard. It is not easy to maintain a high quality Chinese publication on an overseas Chinese community. We have to work very hard on our sourcing and editing of materials as we could not just rely on free download of unverified information from the Internet. We must aim for faultless production and appealing design in the interest of our readers. On the marketing advertisement we must offer effective service to our patrons. Only when all these have been done well then a publication can become popular and viable. In this New Year I wish all readers a better year of advancement and enjoyment. I hope our team would further improve the quality of our publication to the benefit of our readers.
