SPECIAL EVENT: “DO I HAVE TO?” –
HOW CHORES EMPOWER FAMILIES
Co-Sponsored by the Needham Women’s Club
Susan Tordella, Presenter
Sweeping the floor, emptying the dishwasher, and
caring for pets can teach children the priceless gift
of self-discipline. The author of Raising Able: How
Chores Empower Families, will share how to use
encouragement and family meetings to engage totsto-teens
in teamwork, connect to each other, and
have fun. Be ready to laugh as you learn how positive
discipline can motivate your family to pitch in together
without begging, berating, or bribery. Motivation
from doing chores establishes good habits for life.
Susan Tordella, M.A., has taught positive parenting to
scores of parents. Her four children, now ages 23-
30, did chores for years. “They call home, but never
for money,” Susan has said. Visit her blog at www.
BEGINNING BEEKEEPING NEW
Pat Canavan, Instructor
It’s as easy as gardening, gets you outdoors in a new
way, helps local flowers and gardens AND provides
you with locally produced honey – it’s no wonder
that backyard beekeeping has become so popular!
And, many beekeepers report the almost magical
experience of tending the bees. You will learn all
about bees and beekeeping, including bee biology,
required equipment, setting up beehives, acquiring
and installing bees, managing bees throughout the
seasons, and local bee supply dealers. The course
will culminate in one field session on a Saturday
off-site in Newton (weather permitting) working with
live honeybees. The book Beekeeping for Dummies
by Howland Blackiston (ISBN #978-0764554193) is
recommended. Limited to 16.
DRAWING FUNDAMENTALS
Denise Driscoll, Instructor
This class will be geared for beginners and will focus
on basic drawing concepts: line, contour, shape, form,
value and texture. These will be applied as we engage
in a variety of activities, such as drawing from still life,
large-scale environment, self-portrait, and the figure.
While drawing from observation will be our main focus,
abstract possibilities such as conveying mood and
movement through line will also be explored. Classes
will combine short exercises introducing skills and
concepts with longer, more individualized drawing
opportunities. A materials list will be posted on the
adult education page of the district website (under
Community Ed) www.needham.k12.ma.us by class
title. Limited to 12.
