10 FRESH FLOWERS – MOTHER’S DAY TEACUP ARRANGEMENT Kim Knowlton, Instructor Are you looking for a special gift for Mother’s Day? Have you been interested in learning how to create a beautiful fresh floral arrangement? If so, then this course is for you. During this one-night workshop, you will learn the fundamentals of creating an arrangement in a beautiful, oversize teacup that can be kept for future use. You will work with an array of fresh flowers to create your own stunning display. This basic course is appropriate for both beginners and those with experience. The fee covers the cost of fresh flowers, greens, and a high-quality teacup. Please bring sharp scissors or flower stem cutters to class and a cardboard box to transport your new arrangement home. Do you have a child who loves paper crafts? If so, then join this unusual origami class – focused on modular origami, or unit origami. Modular origami uses multiple paper units to create a dazzling variety of colorful figures. This class will focus on the Sonobe module, an easily folded origami unit that can be used to make a stunning array of shapes and structures. The instructor will use specific color patterns to make directions clear for even a twelve- CRAFTS & SKILLS module shape – the stellated octahedron! A materials fee of $10 per parent/child pair is payable to the instructor in class. Class is appropriate for children ages 8-12; parents (or grandparents) can be any age! Through teacher demonstration and hands-on practice, you will learn techniques for turning soda cans, coins, plastic gift cards, and steel nuts into stunning earrings, bracelets, and necklaces. You will leave with at least 3 finished pieces, a variety of samples, and a bunch of ideas to continue making recycled jewelry on your own. A materials fee of $15 is payable to the instructor in class. Please bring a pair of scissors with a point, and flat and round nose jewelry pliers if you have them (there will be plenty to borrow in class if you don’t). Class is appropriate for adults and teens; children aged 8-12 years old are welcome to register with a parent. Limited to 12. 10303 $35 1 Thursday @ NHS Faculty Dining Room (off cafeteria) 6:30-9pm April 5 PARENT/CHILD GLASS FUSING WORKSHOP Michel L’Huillier, Instructor In this 2-hour workshop, you will learn the basics of glass fusing techniques and have fun playing with colors and shapes. Through a series of engaging exercises, parents and children will work together with precut glass pieces, glass frits and stringers, and glass powders and stencils. Each participant will create multiple small pieces, necklaces, and one small bowl or plate. Student creations will then be fused in the kiln after the class; fused items can then be picked up at the classroom the following week, on March 31 between 10am and 1pm, or after March 31 at the Community Education office in the school administration building. A materials fee of $70 (per parent/child pair) is payable to the instructor for all tools and the selection of glasses. Students should bring safety goggles to class, and be sure to wear close-toed shoes. This class is appropriate for children 7-12 years old, when accompanied by a parent or other adult. Limited to 7 parent/child pairs. 11324.2 $59 (per parent/child pair) 1 Saturday @ NHS Room 807 2-4 pm March 24 CRAFTS & SKILLS INTRODUCTION TO GLASS FUSING Michel L’Huillier, Instructor Glass fusing involves permanently binding different pieces of glass at high temperature in a kiln. Using the extensive color palette from the Bullseye Glass Company, and through a series of fun exercises, you will discover the basics of glass fusing. In the first class, you will learn about tack-fusing and how to use stencils with glass powders and frits. In the second class, you will learn to make a ceramic fiber mold to create a ¼” thick relief tile with tinted glass float glass, and also create a fused 8” by 8” bowl or plate. Student creations will then be fused in the kiln after the class; fused items from the second class can be picked up at the Community Education office in the school administration building beginning Monday, April 9. A materials fee of $85 is payable to the instructor for all the tools and the selection of glasses. Students should bring a sketchpad and safety glasses to class, and be sure to wear closetoed shoes. Though the class will teach the basics of glass fusing, it is open to those with experience as well. High school students are welcome too!
